That right there is pretty much what I was wondering, especially since the Order 66 cover they had originally was actually pretty cool - much cooler than either this one or the Clone Wars one.

I think they've got new font-happy cover people who are trying to jazz things up, between this, Mindor, and Jedi Twilight.
The new covers are just making everything look more like juvie stuff, though. Admittedly a huge part of the audience for Star Wars, but still....

Could be, but at least with Mindor and Jedi Twilight there's at least a plausible reason for the unusual fonts. (Not that I'm particularly fond of the Mindor font, distracting from the absurdly beautiful cover behind it as it does, but there is at least some sort of reasoning involved there. This... ???)

All three font/cover treatments are pretty meh to me - this might actually be the one I dislike least.
The Mindor cover is awesome, I really don't like the text.

There's another problem with the cover, other than it looking like excrement: if that's a member of Omega Squad, what's he doing in grey gear? The Omegas were wearing black Katarn armor by now.

My guess: as _Catherine_ suggested, they might have deemed the other cover too close to the Clone Wars novelisation.
While I prefer the original as a fan, I have to hand it to them for doing something that will stand on a crowded bookstore shelf. Whether or not it's suited to the content is a whole new can of worms, of course, but on its own merits, I like it.

Funny you should say that..I have to spend a good deal of my time trying to subliminally (and sideshufflingly) convince bookish relatives that the content is not Young Adult at all. All it takes is one look at all of the SW covers, stark silence, and I know what they're thinking, "You're reading teenage novels!". One is too afraid to broach the issue, "Look, it's not as you think it is", in case one gets an "Oh, really..." accompanied by a look of preoccupation or disinterest. Being caught with the cover facing up can give the same embarassment as you would in being caught reading a Mills and Boon romance novel. Though I can't see any resemblance between them. Oh well...*laughs*

A lot of it is pretty juvenile, though.

Rogue_Follower posted: I think that the actual art is okay (could be a little less sketchy, but I guess they're going for the concept art look), but the massive slanted text makes it look kinda silly.
I wish they would have gone all the way and just made the thing an obvious propaganda poster instead of trying to mimic a style only slightly. A Soviet era Russian look or Nazi Germany era propaganda poster look to it might have worked better.
The largest problem is that I feel like the RC:TC cover was a massive step in the right direction. Not a bit of concept art or reused game ad, but a redone piece based on an awesome pose from the concept art that really looked nice and evoked a sense of, at least for me, soldiers marching off to the treeline in an echo of a Vietnam era shot.
I have to wonder if the fact that it's a hardcover made them move it towards a less daring cover.

Exactly, those two have always been sort of knowingly campy, or at least referencing campy genres intentionally. This however has given no such indication making it seem downright cheesy even to us fans. Plus the font and the color palette are loud, obnoxious and ugly. DR will only retain my respect if this is because of another of George's executive decisions.
Though I will agree it could have worked if it was explicitly in the style of soviet propaganda posters.

That's the problem in a nutshell. I think the general tone was supposed to suggest it, but the cover just doesn't go far enough or is artistic enough to pull the look off. If it had been an obvious propaganda poster in the style of Soviet Russia, then it would actually work, but it's way too bright and doesn't convey its intent enough.

It's Darman, who doesn't want to kill his girlfriend.
"Not so fast, Chancellor... let's not do anything we might REGRET!"
But I think "Republic Commando... WITH A GUN?" would fit the cover style better...

Just you wait, there'll be a third cover up soon that puts the focus more on the drama of the Darman/Etain relationship...
Could someone with more wasteable time on his hands please photoshop a clone helmet on a romance cover, like in the good old Pelly/Daala days...?
But yeah, while I don't like this cover, I'm REEEEEALLY enjoying it!
