Thanks for the reminder, Havac. You're right. I'm deleting this.

My utilisation of complex locution to ask what's more pathetic, fans who worship their movie actors, or the actors who couldn't give a damn, is more a reflection of my own superincumbent mental actuity than any circumscribed lexicon. Don't you agree?

Dammit, you already have a "whine about how Luke isn't how I want him to be" thread. Go there.

....Just a random guy intruding here, but how does any of this discussion pertain to who will get the new SW contract?

Perceived blame for the line's supposed lack of quality (be it the standalone era of Bantam, the NJO/LOTF, or what-have-you) is often thrown at the publisher. Ergo, people are trying to use that as justification for who they feel should/shouldn't get the contract.

Hmmm, I guess this thread did spiral out of control... and I'm certainly to blame as much as anybody else. But didn't either Dark Tide, Agents of Chaos or Balance Point state that Anakin had killed more Vong than any other Jedi? Can anyone help me out here? I think it was likely in Dark Tide, in response to his ass-kicking on Dantooine while protecting Mara.

It's basically been shifted to a 'who should get the contract thread. You know we pick at DR's weaknesses to argue why it should not be them...so on so forth. The incumbent is okay in some aspects...just showing where they could fix certain perceived errors/weaknesses that they have made.

No no, I'm all for criticism, and I certainly don't want people to like books "just because." It's just that the amount of hate on these forums is so gargantuan, that constructive criticism is often hard to find in the midst of "F*dge you Del Rey, you're raping my childhood".
At the same time, though, I have been getting a little preachy, and I want to apologize if any of my previous posts sounded that way. If you don't like the books, I support you, but I don't support you if you assume that everyone else thinks like you and that a reboot would be beneficial.
I have a question, though, in general --- how much of an impact does the publisher actually have? I mean, at the Legacy of the Force and New Jedi Order planning sessions, wasn't Shelly Shapiro the only representative from Del Rey? If another publisher gets the contract, won't the planning sessions still feature Sue Rostoni, James Luceno, and whichever authors are writing the series? Sue makes comments such as "James Luceno is an author we're not willing to lose", so I have to wonder if it's Del Rey or Lucasfilm Ltd. that hires the authors.

Who are all the possible contenders for the contract?
Del Rey of course
I'm assuming Bantam could get it back
Would Scholastic, who already does the teen/youth novels be able to do full adult novels?
Here's a list of Sci-Fi/Fantasy publishers that I know of:
TOR
Avari Press (Fantasy)
Cambrian House Books (Imprint of Sterling)
Legend Books (Imprint of Random House)
Del Rey
Bantam
Zondervan
Any others?
Who are the most likely candidates?
Etc. Etc.
...Just trying to get some REAL speculation on the REAL topic.

I don't really know the exact situation inside the Random House group which includes both Del Rey and Bantam, so it's hard to say whether at this point they could even compete against each other. Certainly the situation is somewhat complex. I would guess that Bantam going for the contract would make no sense for the group as a whole.
I don't think that there sadly is that much competition. I wouldn't like to see Baen get anywhere near the contract, because of the low quality books and horrible covers they usually have - but Baen has published works by current and past SW authors. Ace Books and DAW Books are both owned by Penguin at the moment, I think, so either would have the backing of a major publishing house and could probably make a competitive offer for the contract if Penguin would want. They too have the problem that much that they publish is rather mediocre stuff, not to speak of the Roc stuff.
Personally, I would be interested of seeing what TOR could do with the contract. They are a rather major publishing house owned also by a big publishing group, which could make a contract offer possible, and theirs are usually of higher than average quality books. They also have few former SW authors in their lists. And when Baen's covers are usually horrible faux-pulp covers, TOR books often are quite beautiful.
