Christ in heaven, I have been wanting a book like that for years. If Del Rey publishes it, I may die of delight.

C'mon The Zaarin Insurrection!
I'm happy enough. In their supposed childhood raping that I've heard so much about, Del Rey seems to have missed me. Some great books have come out in their tenure, and on the whole I'd say that the output has been greater than Bantam. On the whole.

Out of curiosity, how did the contract go from Bantam to Del Rey? Did the former lose interest; lost a bid; or other reasons?

My utilisation of complex locution to ask what's more pathetic, fans who worship their movie actors, or the actors who couldn't give a damn, is more a reflection of my own superincumbent mental actuity than any circumscribed lexicon. Don't you agree?

Well, their first book was the TPM novel, wasn't it? That might have something to do with it.
Also, Hard Merchandise was published by Bantam Spectra after that...so I dunno. It's all very confusing.

I would LOVE to read a series based around the Darth Bane era from the Jedi viewpoint - okay honestly - specifically the 10 years between Path of Destruction and Rule of Two - okay more honestly - with one of the main characters being Valenthyne Farfalla. *Holds arms over head to dodge the tomoatos*. I know, I know, I am likely the only fan in the world who'd want this, but I had a totally odd captivation with this character while reading those books and JvS. It would be hilarious and also give us more insight from the other side of the battle - plus there was quite a bit going on at that time, so it would also make for some great storylines.

Note: This is completely hearsay:
But I heard it had to do with capability.
Del Rey had the ability to publish "more" and "more often" then Bantam...either because of size or because of lack of other product queued up.
As LFL was charging forward with ambitious plans for the media onslaught of the Prequels...but Bantam couldn't guarantee a publishing schedule so ambitious, or a product line so vast.
So rather then have Bantam continue it's work, and having another firm pick up the slack with the prequels...they moved it all to Del Rey.

Del Rey probably got to publish the TPM novel early because, as a prequel novel and/or as a novelization, it was probably outside of Bantam's remit.
All the other Del Rey titles waited until after Bantam's contract had, if not expired, at least run through all its titles.

Bantam seemed to generally be putting out 6-8 books a year--as many as or more than Del Rey. And with Random House having bought Bantam Doubleday Dell in 1998, size became identical for both parties.
So: completely hearsay, and completely unbelievable for me.

Perhaps the buyout scared LFL off?
Maybe the buyout conflicted with contract negotiations?
The other part of what I said...the lined up material, might have been significant if Random House had it's own plans for Bantam's schedule.
I assumed at the beginning it was just about money...but most people don't seem to think so...so this idea sounded reasonable to me.
__________
Though I suppose we can put it out there:
Del Rey was the lowest bidder?
fills one with confidence, don't it?

You do realize that pretty much everything goes to the low bidder, right? It's how the system works.

Well then hold on to your job...cause I'd be willing to bet somebody out there would be willing to do it for less money then you.
Yes...the lowest bid is probably THE factor...in a great deal...and is always the tie breaker when all else is equal.
But things are rarely equal. performance, reputation, prior history (bet that plays well with Del Rey getting the renewals)...there can be other reasons.
And like I said, at the time, no one seemed to be under the impression that Del Rey undercut Bantam. In fact...I remember some discussion that LFL was running out on Bantam, even if they were low bid.
Don't know...and so long as the super-secret-society keeps such things mum...probably don't want to pick any deeper.

Sweet.
Now if as a result of the extension we get a novel where K'Kruhk meets Luke and joins the NJO, then I say, FREAKING SWEET!
Especially if they include this from The2ndQuest’s signature: see, I had this freaking sweet hat… I know that won’t happen, but I can still hope for outside chances.

Well, from reading the back of the Legacy of the Force: Invincible, I can tell that Del Rey won the contract without reading a confirmation from secret sources. I'm okay with it, becuase that means more star wars fiction. I don't think Bantam or Del Rey can be blamed for story directions, since "EVERYTHING" gets DONE at LUCASLAND! They are the ones that are to blame for some of the stories that may not pan out for some of you. I don't blame Del Rey for that anymore than I balme Bantam for the hokey stuff they came out with.
Personally, I didn;t like the direction that LucasBooks took durng the first contract with Bantam with the exception of Timothy Zahns books and the X-wing books. I thought the other ones I could do without. I did not like andy of Kevin J. Anderson books, whether the jedi academt trilogy or the young jedi knights and crap like that. Barbara Hambly stuff was just horrible for me. What I did like from the Del Rey side was cohesive stories in arcs. The prequel stuff in novel form was awesome to include the movie adaptions. The only books I did not like were that Ansion stuff, that book about Leia and that art she was after, and Galaxies of the Dantioone or somthing like that. Those three I could do without. I did enjoy the entire NJO, Swarm War, and LOTF arcs. I hope that the new contract has a variety or eras, to include KOTOR. What I don't want is a contract with 18 books, with 6 set after LOTF and 6 set after ROTS before A New Hope, a 3 book trilogy in between Episode 1 and 2, and three books in KOTOR. I hope that there is greater diversity in era and not one single era pinned with the majortiy number of books. When the new live action tv series comes around, I hope that a different contract is drafted up ala clone wars, and not with the regular book contract.
Thats just my 10 cents
