That's hilarious! The scene when the Devaronian tips his head back to die quicker -- that you didn't even see anyway -- editors had a panick attack? It goes to show how serious they think most SW readers are diaper-augmented kids.
It's like, they think we don't read other books? Today, it's hard to find a sci fi / fantasy book that doesn't have torture. Didn't Goodkind have someone eat testicles and have a young girl kicked in the neck? Not that I'd read his . . . books, but that's the least what I've read.

My utilisation of complex locution to ask what's more pathetic, fans who worship their movie actors, or the actors who couldn't give a damn, is more a reflection of my own superincumbent mental actuity than any circumscribed lexicon. Don't you agree?

Specific words they censored out of my stories included "hell," "damn," "whore," and "pootang."
But "jizz band" was OK.
OK, I made up that about pootang. I didn't even try that one.

So's "hell."
"Whore" and "pootang" make sense, though. :-p

Still puzzling over how you could use the word "pootang" seriously within a story...
"You will never find a more wretched hive of scum and villainy. Oh, but seriously that place is just flowing with poontang. Dammit I need a drink."
I find it odd that they'd be opposed to having the word whore when c. 1984 they had Lando getting advice from a hooker on a street corner. "Nothing, not one lonely, even marginally affluent gentleman has passed this way all night." It's hard to suggest that this is anything but a prostitute, and this was in a comic book!
I think I remember something about this part being removed from reprintings though...

"Whores" got removed from Empire Blues; apparently Imperial Stormtroopers never pay for the pootang.
"Barve" there's no point in discussing.
"Last One Standing," though otherwise not screwed with much, had all the harsh language removed from it -- hell and damn specifically. The stereotypical cities of "Dying Slowly" and "Death" were originally the stereotypical cities "Halfway to Hell" and "Hell" -- not much funnier that way, but a little. I forget where damn got yanked, but it was all through the first draft. And yes, both those words occur in the movies.
The only one in LOS that really annoyed me was the bit where Lando Calrissian left a message for Han Solo -- something to the effect of "You owe me five hundred dollars, you've been betting on the slow ones lately." Got changed to "You owe me five hundred dollars," no mention of why.
That's right: Han Solo no longer gambles. Harrison Ford was right to want that character to die.

Wow...this gives fascinating insight to the inner workings.
The often considered juvenile tone of the Bantam Era...it was challenged by the writers!
And yet, the darker, arguably more mature nature of NJO on...interesting. Seems after butting heads with you and others for years, they decided to change direction after cutting you loose.
Could it be that more can be gotten away with now then a decade ago?
I smell hypocrisy.
DKM...I miss you...and I miss KJA...I'd trade the whole boat load right now to get you guys back on board.
Was Dark Angel going to repair the damage the PT did to Fett? I'd love to get a story reaffirming the short stories in the face of Papa George's obvious indifference to the EU.
If you ever feel so inclined to put out a "fan fiction"...we will be waiting.

Huh. Hell and damn both got through in The Thrawn Trilogy. Sounds like you hit a particularly rough editorial patch -- that's just silly. Even sillier, damn got through several times in Tales From the Mos Eisley Cantina, including once in Empire Blues -- even bastard made it into the Muftak and Kabe tale. That's just really odd that they clamped down on you like that. Unfortunate, too.

I think this thread is going to prompt me to pull out my TotBH's again.
DKM, gotta say Last One Standing is probably the best SW story I've read. I never thought I'd get a chance to say this to you in any shape or form. Anytime I think of Fett, I think of how you wrote him.
Can't believe its been 10 yrs since I picked up that book.
ok, I'm done.

If you experience a rectitude lasting more than four hours, consult a physician.
It's awesome when authors post here! It's been a while since I've read this story: what was the "torture scene," again?
