Do the comics take place before the novels? I have put off this series for years. The comics got me interested. Are the books better?

Comics take place before the novels. The last omnibus is awesome because of Fel's background story and the appearance of Corran Horn. happy

Essentially the X-Wing series is three smaller sub-series' combined together. The initial four books written by Stackpole encompass the “Rogue Squadron” series, which tells of the reformation of the squadron shortly following the comics, and I guess could be called a continuation of them but feature a continuing plot separate from it.

The following three books are known as the “Wraith Squadron” series, which features an almost entirely new cast of characters and are written by Aaron Allston.

The final two books are more or less standalones, and the character line up mixes those from the Rogue Squadron comic and those from the first four novels.

As to whether they’re good or not is entirely in the eye of the beholder. Thus far I’ve read from books one to four, the “Rogue Squadron” series, and that was quite a while back now.

I will say I enjoyed them at the time, but after sampling some of Stackpole’s more recent writings in the NJO series I’m not sure if that’s because they were good or just that my critiquing palette at the time I read them was less advanced (at that time I hadn’t read many novels). But it’s perfectly possible that Stackpole’s own skills while writing the NJO books were off, which seems to be the popular consensus I see when it’s brought up on the boards.

I’d recommend you try out the first book “Rogue Squadron” if you like it you like it and get the next book. If you don’t like it... well you get the idea.

Phantom Affair
Battleground Tatooine
In the Empire's Service
Blood and Honour
Maserquade
Mandatory Retirement

Are the only Rogue-class comics you should be reading. Don't bother with the other TPBs. Not at half price either.

The comics take place over the course of 4 ABY. In late 5 ABY, the squadron is disbanded for its pilots to be put to other use; in second half of 6 ABY, Wedge and Tycho reform Rogue Squadron and take down Ysanne Isard, which is the plotline of the first four X-wing novels. In the next three X-wing novels, Wedge takes a break to form a commando-specialized squadron called Wraith Squadron with Janson; Hobbie meanwhile returns to Rogue Squadron. In the course of those novels, the Wraiths go after Warlord Zsinj, eventually pairing up with the Rogues. The next novel features the Rogues, having assimilated some Wraiths after the Wraiths were transferred to intelligence work, dealing with the return of a clone of Isard. The final X-wing novel is Wedge, Tycho, Hobbie, and Janson going to a newly-discovered world which reveres pilots to negotiate with them and being opposed by Turr Phennir and his 181st. Links exist primarily in the form of Tycho and Isard as major characters, though Mirax, Corran, and others show up and are more important than in the comics, and Elscol Loro, Nrin Vakil, and a few others making cameos in less-important roles. The quality is better than the comics, bar possibly the third Omni, which is the best and much of it is nearly as good as the novels, considering that they're different mediums which are used to tell different kinds of stories.

I tried to read Omnibus One and just didn't like it at all. Are two and three better? I'm interested in three because of Fel, but how much of two do I need to read? I rarely skip around like this, but the x-wing stuff (novels included) bored me to tears....

I agree, the novels were hell.

Never got around to Starfighters Of Adumar, though, and I've only heard good things about that.

Omnibus 3 was great. Omnibus 1 was okay and I have 2 but haven't gotten around to reading it. 1 and 2 were so cheap that I cannot complain.

3 is rather good and the best of the 3 Omni, and contains the whole Rise of Isard and Fel storylines.

1 has basicly 1 good story arc (Phantom Affair) and 2 so-so-at-best ones (Rogue Leader & Rebel Opposition)

2 has the worst of the series (Requiem for a Rogue), 1 "eh" (Warrior Princess) and 1 fun-n-actiony-if-silly (Battleground Tatooine).

I'd say if you had the chance, just get Omni 3 and track down The Phantom Affair by itself and your good.

I feel burnt by the first two omnibuses...the new Rogue Leader had cool artwork but the others were meh. I'm hoping Vol 3 is better.

I'm just about finished Rogue Squadron and have pretty much enjoyed it. It took a while to set up Horn who I of course know and the rest of the squad. Outside of that, a decent novel. It's not Jedi oriented so it's a stretch for me which paid off. Which are generally the better books, the Stackpole or Allston ones? And are these still considered as good as the reviews made them out to be?

You will enjoy the first 4. The next 4 by Allston are quite good too. He's been deitified by many acolytes here adored his immature primary school "humour". Book 8 was entirely unnecessary, and book 9 is Allston at his utter immaturity best. A planet of mexican-accented buffoons . . . words just fail me.

Most folk seem to prefer Allston, though I found Stackpole's to be much better, and also much more relevant.
