Hi, RC! In the ENTIRE Star Wars EU. If you have a favorite or least favorite in LotF, you can mention those as well, but I was thinking of the entire EU when I posed the questions.

Regarding the survival of Jedi after Order 66, the view that they diminish Luke is IMO clutching at straws, none of them would have the emotional connection to Anakin that made him realise what an idiot he had been for the last twenty plus years, none of them would have been able to get anywhere near Palpatine or Vader in the first place plus of course there was the Inquisitors who by the time of Endor dealt with most of the Jedi Survivors, there's also the fact that Vader would have no reason to pause or any qualms in cutting them to pieces and the majority of them didn't starting making their presence known until after Endor when the Empire had more important problems to deal with than hunting down Force Sensitives plus of course most of them were not Masters IIRC.
The only Master whose fate is so far unconfirmed up to now is Vos from what I recall and he had intended to leave the Jedi Order when the Clone Wars was ended.
Rahn was killed by Jerec years before Luke started to recreate the Jedi Order, Yoda had died of old age and Obi Wan had been killed by Vader.
Regarding K'hrukk his involvement in rebuilding the Jedi order seem to be minimal at best from what has been revealed thus far IIRC as by the time he showed his face Luke had already done most of the work.

And Luke was the last of the Jedi... how many other Jedi were out there actively involved in the Rebellion? Qu Rahn, maybe, but none in the same capacity as Luke Skywalker.
We still don't even know what K'Kruhk was doing.

having trouble picking a fav author for luke. i like how Zahn's luke is a master problem solver. in VotF hes trapped but uses the force, spare power packs, and his saber to get out. i like how several authors wrote him as knowing he is very powerful but holding back, like in TNR brakkis attacks him but luke only blocks- doesn't attack. unfortunately in that book the only time he was against an enemy that needed to be killed he was injured/mentally screwed up and couldn't do it.
did you guys/gals notice that in the earlier books luke needed to be beaten within an inch of life in order for the villains to fight against him and not be swiftly defeated?
in the bantam series the only time i haven't liked luke's character was in the BFC. i know it makes him more human to be fooled by the prospect of learning more about him mom, but the trilogy coulda been over in 2 books IMO. very minor gripe. atleast he got laid
EDIT
one moment that made me laugh out loud was in SotE when he turns on his new saber for the first time and is worried that it'll blow up on him

Yeah, but he wou;dn't have anything to lose at this point.
Most in-character? Hmm... I almost wanna say the YJK. Perfect balance of butt-kicking Master and knowing when to let the kids handle it themselves. Yoda and Mace all in one. First scene he's in, he gives a cool lecture and then talks a rampaging monster into leaving the Academy alone.
How freakin' cool is that?

My favourite books/ scenes of Luke would be...
Allegiance:
One scene stands out here; Luke lights the saber, the bar freezes, all eyes turn to him as he holds it aloft. A perfect image of Luke's life, really.
SotE:
The battle with Xizor's android (Guri?) is impressive indeed!
TTT:
There are three moments in TTT that, to me, stand out strong. The first is on Myrkr where, devoid of the Force, Luke evades a Stormtrooper trap. The second is when Luke breaks into the Chimaera - the flagship of Grand Admiral Thrawn! - and rescues Talon Karrde out from under his nose. The third is when Luke escapes from Karrde's cell, unable to use the Force but smart and cunning all the same.
TUF:
The final scenes of TUF are staggering; Luke wields power the like of which we've never seen him use before, taking on armies of Yuuzhan Vong and even neutralising Slayers.

Maybe no one besides Luke would have been able to reach the Anakin inside Darth Vader and redeem him, but I think almost any Jedi who survived could have restored the Jedi Order. For me, it's the restoration of the Order that is Luke's greatest achievement, not the redemption of Anakin Skywalker. That's why I feel that Luke is diminished more by every Jedi who survived Order 66, as it no longer seems that he is as important or as necessary as when he was the ONLY Jedi. Now we know that others could have trained Jedi and brought them back from the brink of extinction.
I agree that K'Kruhk's involvement in rebuilding the new Jedi Order seems minimal. In fact, as far as LotF, KK never showed up to help Luke. That's why I find it so irritating that long after Luke is dead this prequel order Jedi, who never gave Luke the support, knowledge, or counsel he needed, now seems to lead the Jedi Order after Luke is gone. I feel it should have been one of Luke's new order, or someone taught by one of Luke's Jedi who should be the leader of the Jedi in Legacy, not a prequel Jedi.

Which is again why I'm annoyed when yet another prequel Jedi shows up.

Thrawn McEwok posted: I'll go so far as to say that DelRey may have ALREADY fatally damaged the character in the canon continuity: they've had him being ineffectual for the length of TWO full story-arcs in NJO and DN3, and while he stood up and took out his lightsaber at the end of both, he's in danger of becoming something of a cliché.
This is one of the principal reasons that I no longer read the profic, sad to say. I slogged my way through the wildly uneven NJO to its unsatisfying conclusion, skipped DN entirely and tried to read the first of this ongoing Legacy series a few weeks ago before realizing that I simply don't like where the franchise has gone. This isn't Luke Skywalker and, as much as I actively loath the magic!reset!button device (abused by Stargate and Star Trek alike), I find myself almost wishing that Luke (from a couple of weeks after the end of The Last Command) would wake up from the horrible dream that the profic has become so this whole mess of wildly OOC "heroes" could be obliterated from continuity.
But alas ... that is not to be the case. I miss the real Star Wars...

I have a hard time choosing the book I like the best for Luke's characterizations, but Zahn is my favorite author. I liked his Luke characterizations most of the time. He writes Luke as the resourceful character that he is in the films.
As Dart mentioned, I too loved when Luke escaped from Karrde using a battery from his prosthetic hand, and when single-handedly defeated the stormtroopers in Heir to the Empire without use of the Force. I liked when he rescued Talon Karrde in TTT, and when he escaped from the Jedi trap in SotP. I also enjoyed Luke and Mara working together in VotF and in Survivor's Quest. I like the way Zahn writes Luke as talented and competent even without the Force.
I also really liked Luke in Courtship of Princess Leia. Luke is written here as powerful in the Force. I loved when he flew the Falcon alone, working all the guns at the same time.
Another good Luke characterization is in TUF. He is truly shown as a powerful Jedi Master here, as he takes on many slayers and Shimrra. I remember that Jaina and Jacen were highly impressed. He moved so quickly that they could barely see him. He was also instrumental in working out the peace negotiations.
Another favorite is Truce at Bakura, with its heroic, compassionate, human Luke. Kathy Tyers is a Luke fan and it shows.
As for my least favorite Luke books, one would be Sacrifice, with its snoring, raging (when Lumiya delivered Ben's boots), vengeance-killing Luke. Others are the Crystal Star, the Black Fleet Crisis, and (though not a novel), Dark Empire.
Darth_Foo , I too like Zahn's portrayal of Luke as a good problem-solver.
in the bantam series the only time i haven't liked luke's character was in the BFC. atleast he got laid
I really didn't like that Luke followed Akanah around like a lost puppy and was completely manipulated and fooled by her. Wasn't the BFC also where Luke was wearing that ratty robe with patches from all of his old clothes, including his pilot's uniform and where he built himself a hermitage??? I really did NOT like that series either.
As for Akanah, I dislike her intensely and choose to believe that although she and Luke spent the night in a bunk together holding one another, that they never had a sexual relationship. The way the author wrote this: "Loneliness, grief, compassion, and a previously undiscovered hunger for a touch that felt like acceptance had brought them to the brink. But by silent mutual consent, something had been held back. Neither of them had asked for or offered their deepest intimacies. And, unpressured, each had allowed the other to enjoy the novelty of not being alone," , with just enough ambiguity, allows me to believe that they weren't intimate.
RK_Striker_JK_5 , I agree that Luke was written as a strong and smart Jedi Master in the YJK. There just wasn't enough of him in those books to satisfy me though.
J_K_DART , I was surprised that you didn't mention the JAT in your list of Luke characterizations that you like the best. I think that you were rather fond of Luke's sort of Messianic role in that series, right?

Welcome to the SOS thread, RK! I'm with you. I'd like to reset the Star Wars EU back to the end of The Last Command and start over too. You're right that the characters have been written as "wildly out of character", Luke especially. He hasn't even been written as a hero in LotF, doing some very morally questionable things and being very unsuccessful at attaining his goals.

Ah, of course, JAT! I admit I was slightly distracted during that last post; I've just read both Allegiance and the first Legacy arc, Broken, and am putting together a post on my thoughts re: these. Thus I admit my last post didn't have as much thought to it as it should have done! You know me well; JAT Luke impresses me, as much because of Anderson's way-cool imagery as anything else lol... And the volcanophile in me loves the idea of walking over a lava lake!

Yes, I thought you might have forgotten something. The JAT wasn't one of my favorite stories, but I certainly liked it a whole lot better than any of the stories (NJO, DN, or LotF) that we've gotten from Del Rey. While I didn't like that Luke spent most of one book in a coma and that he was defeated by Kun/Kyp, it was infinitely better than things like the vengeance killing that we got from Luke in Sacrifice.
Invincible comes out on Tuesday. I'm wondering once all of this is said and done, what kind of a Legacy LUke is supposedly leaving. Things seem to keep getting worse and worse, both for the galaxy in general and for Luke in particular.

COW except for the slight fact that any attempt to re build the Jedi Order without getting rid of Darth Sidious/ the Empire is akin to all the Jedi survivors standing outside the Imperial Palace waving their Lightsabers about.
Let's take a look at some of the Known Jedi survivors and list their fate shall we.
Brand. Spent years hiding and only emerged several years after Palpatine and Vader's death.
Corwin. Jedi Knight only. Likely killed prior to the Battle Of Endor.
Dark Woman - Killed by Vader prior to the Battle Of Yavin.
Hett. Fell to the Dark Side and became Darth Krayt, years after the death of Sidious and Vader.
K'hrukk. Only Prequel era Jedi known to have survived to Cade's time.
Obi Wan. Killed by Vader.
Qu Rahn. Killed by Jerec.
Quinlan Vos. Unknown but unlikely to be a happy ending given that we have not see any sign of him or his offspring in the years after Endor.
Tholme. Likely to end up being killed by Vader or the Inquisitors.
Yoda. Died of old age.

Very brief, spoiler-free first impression of Invincible:
My God, I'm glad Jason Felix is done with SW after this one. The last three books have had some of the worst cover art I've ever seen.
And I'm surprised that Invincible is so short, too. If it reaches 300 pages I'll eat my socks. Doesn't seem like a climax novel to me.
I'll confine my thoughts to the respected thread after this post.
