C, I have to agree with Dizfactor on this one: the Jedi are keepers of the peace, and I'd add, protectors of the innocent. I also much prefer Mon Mothma's take about Jedi, that they can come from any walk of life. Jedi can be teachers, lawyers, scientists, diplomats, doctors, etc. and use their special Force talents in their life's work. But when necessary, they stand against evil.

This is what I think Luke was heading toward with his New Jedi Order before the prequels came out and Del Rey and the authors decided to infuse more and more of the prequel traditions and beliefs into Luke's Order. I would very much like to see Luke utilize Mon Mothma's vision for the Jedi in the future. They would then be living and working among the regular people of the galaxy a great deal of the time. Perhaps then those non-Force sensitive citizens would no longer fear the Jedi and would respect them more as they came to really know and trust them. Unfortunately, I'm pretty sure this won't happen, as we already know about the future of the Jedi in Legacy. sad

plus a Jedi Knighthood that IS actively fighting against the Sith.

We haven't seen all that many Jedi in existence in Legacy, C. I know we've heard that about half of the Order survived, but almost all are on the run, not actively fighting against the Sith, pretty much like after Order 66. And the GA is merely a remnant, so neither is much of a Legacy for Luke Skywalker.

Rouge77 ,
I really doubt that Gunn is a descendant of Luke's, but even if she is, as you pointed out, an Imp space pilot isn't much of an extra legacy for Luke either. sad

Jedi Ben :
The one given by Bodo Baas.

Oh, yes. Isn't that the one that was very complimentary toward Leia and called Luke "foolish brother"? Not exactly one of my favorites. Poor Luke always seems to get the short end of the stick when it comes to respect for the Skywalker twins. sad

sabarte :
Nobody's asking that the galaxy be put in perfect order. But it should be at least be as stable as the Old Republic before Sidious started meddling.

I agree, S. This way, it looks like Luke, Leia, and Han and their colleagues were all complete failures, and I don't like that at all!

CoW, take heart. From the covers previews on DH's website we're going to be seeing some of those exiled-on-the-run Jedi doing some derring-do in Legacy in the next couple months.

I absolutely agree with this. Jedi shouldn't be shoehorned into this. In fact Force-sensitives shouldn't be shoehorned into this area. After all, didn't Nomi Sunrider content herself with being wife to a Jedi until she was required to become a Jedi because her husband was killed in action?

What is wrong with a Force-sensitive applying themselves in an area that is not traditionally Jedi. I do know that from a certain standpoint there are certain things that Jedi should not be - such as lawyers becuse they could use the Force to cheat!, but something like being a healer/doctor, a scientist would be a nice fit for Jedi/Force-trained people to serve in. Wouldn't Jedi be the greatest social workers? With their Force empathy they would also make great counsellors.

The mistake of the Jedi of the Prequel era was that they were too disconnected from the society around them. I would not like to see the same mistake made again.

Me, in Legacy, I'm looking forward to Bane, Andendu and Nihilus playing a larger part. It is obvious that they want to replace Krayt - they just need to find a suitable student and I'm sure it won't be long before they make their own powerplay...

Not at the moment, but she might just be an ugly Imp larval caterpillar that ends up becoming a beautiful Jedi butterfly - if she is Kol's child. At the moment I strongly think this to be the case.

I don't see Gunn becoming a Jedi.

I'd prefer if she stayed a Space Pilot.

It would demean the Jedi way to make her a Jedi just because she's a Skywalker.

Cade is a wonderful tale of a man whose a Jedi because he has to be, rather than because he wants or should be.

This is contradictory: If Bounty Hunter scum Cade has to become a Jedi, why the same would not hold true about an Imp ace pilot? After all, Cade has to be a Jedi just because he is a Skywalker, there's not really more to it. And it's not like there would be an overabundance of the Jedi after the most recent purge, so if an Imp space pilot could become a Jedi, then shouldn't she made to be one?

No, because it's a CAUTIONARY tale. The personal human misery and suffering Cade endures is a mockery of the Jedi way.

Charlemagne19, I forgot to respond to this: Furthermore, you ignore that the retcon that human lifespans are only 100 years makes the 100 years of peace much more patable.

So when did THIS happen??? In Dark Nest, Leia told Han at nearly 70 that he had "40 GOOD years ahead of you, 50, if you take care of yourself". And Zahn referred to Talon Karrde and Jinzler, who were both in their late 60's at the time, as "middle-aged". All of this, plus Denning's comments before LotF confirm that 120 is the average life-span in that GFFA. And it makes perfect sense with their advanced medical technology.

J_K_DART :

And Legacy, quite frankly, is a breath of fresh air.

I feel exactly the opposite, Dart. I think it's more of the same. It's really just a rehash of everything we've already seen, with perhaps a slight twist. But what bothers me about it is that it's a very depressing view of the future of the SW galaxy, as well as what it means for Luke and the others.

Because of Legacy, it's obvious that Luke never got his "...happily ever after". Because of Legacy, everything Luke has strived to do or will continue to strive to do in the future has been and will be, in vain. As you said, the galaxy is yet again dark and in chaos. the GA is nothing but a remnant. The Jedi Order that Luke struggled to rebuild is again purged. Even worse, one of its main teachers and leaders is now NOT a student of Luke's Order or one taught by one of his students. Instead, that teacher/leader is K'Kruhk, who was a PT Jedi. angry There are once again Sith...and LOADS of them. Luke apparently completely missed that they were rebuilding during his tenure. And Luke's only descendant is an unlikeable, irritating jerk. Luke deserved better. sad

Luke appears extremely briefly in Legacy, but he's ineffectual and useless. Cade ends up listening to K'Kruhk more than he ever did to Luke.

it is Luke's beacon of light that Cade sees. I think Legacy has a chance, by the end of it, of being the most Luke-respecting piece of EU ever written. I like.

You'll find as you read more, Dart, that Luke seems to be all but forgotten, except for one more extremely brief appearance. sad

Dawud786 :

That would be very welcome, if they actually accomplish something.

Yes, I agree, and then the Jedi would make a more POSITIVE impact on the galaxy, rather than just fighting in wars. Yes, the Jedi of the prequel era were too disconnected from society around them and this contributed to their fall, I think.

Well, another descendant of Luke Skywalker would be very welcome. Why do you think she's Kol's child?

It's been confirmed in Star Wars Insider.

It's been confirmed in Star Wars Insider.

To me, what's written in the books takes precedence. Not all of us read the Insider, you know. I used to read the Insider, but stopped because they said some pretty silly things in the Insider. So who alleges that the age-thing has changed...AGAIN?

The opposite is actually true. Insider is straight from Lucasfilm.

That doesn't really matter, C. Unless it's stated in the books, how are readers who don't read the Insider supposed to know about it? This contradicts what's already written in the books, so I still say that 120 is the average lifespan in that GFFA. I'm guessing someone at the top got a bit concerned when they realized how close Legacy was to LotF and decided to do a little retconning. But I'm not "buying" it, just like I'm not "buying" the claim that Luke trained for nine months with Yoda.

Seriously, the Bakurans live that long because they're much more machine than man at that point. It's covered in the sourcebooks.

And in the movies, Obi-Wan is an "old man" at not even 60.

How do you explain Leia's comment to Han then, as well as late 60's being middle-aged? Plus, Luke, Han, and Leia certainly move very well for almost 60 year olds and an over 70 year old if they have the same lifespan that we do on Earth!

But this is off-topic guys. wink So before Havac shows up and starts deleting posts (He's actually been pretty lenient lately, thankfully!), I guess we'd better get back to discussing Luke! wink
