I have to admit, I wasn't expecting much when I *finally* picked up Republic Commando: Hard Contact a few weeks ago. SO much of the Clone Wars-era stuff was, frankly, uninspired and anti-climactic.

But.

I thoroughly enjoyed Karen's first Star Wars book, and am now enamored with the sub-series. I actually feel empathy for the characters, and feel that if her books had been mainstreamed as part of the "regular" Clone Wars offerings from Del Rey, I probably would have felt more involved.

Her pacing is great in these books, and the taut, cinematic prose works well.

I probably woukld have appreciated her efforts in the LOTF series more if I'd read those books *first*.

Needless to say, I'm highly anticipating "Order 66".

Also, I think Etain (in my mind) looks and talks like Emma Thompson.

And I have to say that I was surprised that the original Clone Wars run didn't have more pathos in the sense that Anikan would probably relate to the "warrior-slaves" due to his own experiences, and would have had a more meaningful relationship with them, than in what was originally laid out for use.

And here's to hoping that the new TV series doesn't blow it.

Yes they are. Extremely good actually. Karen needs to stick to her original characters and stay far, far away from established ones and anything involving the New Jedi Order.

Well, I wouldn't go that far, but I think she has a capacity for charactarization and story-teling that could be better utilized in the Star Wars mainstream.

But I'll agree that I think her books are on the weaker side of the new series.

I've liked all the Republic Commando novel a lot... but Hard Contact is my least favorite, and I concur that KT should probably stay with the characters she created and less with those that have been already established....I'm gonna say it again, I wanna see KT do a novel from the Mando's pov in the Mandalorian Wars.

Boba Frett: how far into the Republic Commando series have you gone yet, out of interest? My reaction was very like yours after Hard Contact, but I found Triple Zero a very different sort of book: not BAD, but rather different in tone and style from what I was anticipating...

I'd be interested to know what your reaction is like... grin

I really enjoyed the Republic Commando series.
The Karen Travis books have been my favorites in the Legacy series too.

I thought Hard Contact was fantastic. It was well-written, well-paced, well-characterized. Triple Zero I found to be quite mediocre. The villain of HC had depth; the villains of TZ were practically nonexistent. The protagonists of HC were interesting and empathetic, while those of TZ were a bunch of highly unlikeable people who I felt no reason to even care if they lived, much less root for. Etain was an interesting developing character in HC, who managed to lose about ten years of mental and emotional age in TZ. The sense of danger and excitement in HC was ended by literal character shields in TZ, and the pacing of the latter was downright tedious. And TZ was very obviously a message book, and not a very subtly delivered message at that; this didn't help with the tedium, since it felt like every point got hammered in again and again.

Me too. I'm tired of the Clone Wars and I will not watch the new show coming out with Anakin having a jail-bait apprentice, but for some reason....the Republic Commando books are becoming more and more interesting to me.

Where do I start?

Hard Contact, then Triple Zero, then True Colors. (Though make sure to read the short stories included at the back of TZ/TC before their respective novels!)

I've said it before in the Triple Zero thread, I think these books could become the new X-wing side series. I like them.

I was a little lukewarm about Hard Contact, but Triple Zero and True Colors are two key reasons why I still maintain an interest in the EU. For me, Traviss is one of the rare SW authors who bothers emphasizing characterization and theme over movie style action sequences. Can't wait for the next book.
