Maybe it was an 'experimental' phase.
Besides, Asyr Sei'lar looks good in one of Japanese sources. At least elevating her to Twi'lek status on the alien hotness chart.

I love that being attracted to a realistic anthropomorphic animal is depraved and implausible, but being attracted to a Manga-style anthropomorphic animal is perfectly understandable.

I think because it's more anthropomorphosed. It's conceivable to people that you could be attracted to something that looks basically human with an animal trait or two, but it seems weird to deem something attractive because it looks mostly like an animal - and not even a simian - except it has opposable thumbs.
I mean, I always hated that pic of Wes because the least the artist could have done would be to make her look soft...like, I dunno, some sort of daintier, prettier animal instead of a grizzly bear with man hands and nothing resembling a feminine figure.
