Sorry if this has already been asked, but can Del Rey completely avoid the Legacy comics and make their own future for 137 ABY? Like say they don't like the comics, can they disregard them and simply put their own story in place for it?

No, they can't, without permission from LFL. And it's probably not coming. Of course, DR could always try to interpret the same future somewhat differently in their novels.

As mentioned above, no they cannot. And considering how much effort has been put in by DHC I think it be disingenuous for DR to even think of messing with a formula which so far has worked marvellously. As I've said too many times I don't think DR have either the foresight or the inclination to bother with anything beyond Luke, Leia and Han.
Novels may come along and like with the retcons presented between the Bane novels and JvS, we'll probably see not so much a different take as a different tone to the events.
Personally I'd like the novels to stay the hell away. DHC don't need the interference.

I'd say it's high time for Dark Horse Books to start publishing their own novels, frankly. tongue

I adore Legacy. I love how it's obvious John & Jan went digging through the old ANH scripts and are basically giving us a non-Infinities Infinities of how the Original Trilogy might've gone. The bad guys are BAD, the good guys are GOOD, and there's happily not alot of people in the middle. Even Cade is deciding to be a good guy (imo) after a fair chunk of time of being borderline bad.

And however it turns out, I guarantee nobody will be able to predict how it ends.

A -- The advent of Legacy stopped the natural stream of novels that would have/may have occurred in their good time. Up to, through, and beyond 130 ABY. (Though, like a catalyst, it injected something vibrant into that point, likely kickstarting new ideas for the future that wouldn't have otherwise been there)

See, I don't know if the novels ever actually would have reached 130 ABY in any case. The EU's being going for how long? Because the books have only just reached 40 ABY. There's a long, long time before they come anywhere close to Legacy.

I'd agree, if this was pre-Del Rey, which had something somewhere filling every gap clear from 2 BBY to 23 ABY, but Del Rey leapt ten years between TUF and Betrayal, with only three books in-between. That's a pretty large jump. We could reach 130 ABY quite quickly.

That being said, Del Rey filled 40 ABY with nine novels, which is at the other end of the scale of possible-irritation. And of course the Clone Wars has... what? A hundred pieces in it? And more coming?

We're either saturated in one point or leaping around. So we could launch ourselves forward or slow to snail pace...

Like many others, I'm banking on snails pace. Del Rey simply doesn't have the foresight to really focus on new characters- they've had two large series and a trilogy to try, and have failed to do so every time. I wouldn't be surprised if it takes us seven years to reach Ben's 21st birthday.

I think the timing is just right. Gives the series enough of a tie to the current DR stuff that it has a sense of immediacy to it and I like Cade more because he isn't that far decended from Luke. Plus it make more sense that Force ghost Luke and Mara visit him. And it allows for some things to be the same to give us a connection, but far enough away from the LOTF timeline to allow for a fresh take on other things.

The one thing I do hope is that there is a period -- even if it is a short one -- of peace and stability before Legacy's Sith-Imperial war kicks off. This is out of Dark Horse's control, of course, but I would like to see Luke's order enjoy a moment of accomplishment. Maybe a few years sort of like between WW1 and WW2.

I also want to say that I have been very vocal about my feelings about Legacy -- they were mostly negative. Well over the long weekend I thought about it a bit and decided to give the first TPB -- which is how I read it -- another chance. Someone told me that it never says there are 10,000 Sith -- one of my big roadblocks for Legacy, and that it was probably closer to 100 -- and I said okay I'll try it again. I basically just let everything I'd heard, read, and thought go and tried to just enjoy the characters and the ride... and I gotta say... I now count myself as a fan!

Hope that doesn't make me a hypocrite - I know I've posted some harsh things - and while I still have some reservation is some areas about the book - it really is a lot of fun and the characters so far are cool. Cade has a bad past, but somehow doesn't have the baggage that that the DR characters have right now, which is a testament to the writing. The Jedi Order splitting into the IK and the old school Jedi is a neat idea, too.

I still would like to see more variety in the look of the Sith other than Darth Maul knock-offs, but I haven't read Claws of the Dragon yet so I'm done talking about and bashing Kryat/Hett until I read that.

Anyway, hope I'm not too late to the party! LOL.
