So I just read (well, skimmed through) Marvel #3: The Apprentice, wherein Flint is introduced.

Basically, our happy heroes (Luke, Leia, Land & company) come to Flint's home planet for some reason or another and wind up tangling with Imperials. There's a battle (complete with X-Wings tow-cableing AT-ATs) and stuff blows up. During all this Flint is driving a landspeeder with his mom and pal Barney riding in it, for reasons that escape me since I wasn't really paying attention and ran here to post this before I went back to figure out what was going on.

ANYWAY, Flint & passengers are thrown from the car, and his mother is killed.

So when Flint wakes up, he finds his mother's body, bends over her, and the following reality-warping sequence occurs...

(Just so things make sense, Flint's father was apparently a Jedi and Flint's been supporting the rebels up 'till now. Also, Vader's present on-planet; he's looking for Luke, I think, but he happens to be looking on while Flint monologues over his mother's body.)

FLINT (to his mother's body): It was all just a game... we were useless... we couldn't do a thing... and they [the Rebels] let us go on... pretending we could help... but we couldn't... we were useless.. I was useless... and now you're dead...

I swear... I swear to you... I'm going to learn... I'm going to get the same training my father had... I'm going to become someone who matters... And then I'll show you all!

VADER: I know how you feel... I had almost forgotten what it was like to feel that way... It has been some time since I heard anyone speak the way you do now...

I did not take you seriously before, and I should have... forgive me. Let me make it up to you now...

Vader then gives his "become my Shadow Hand" sales pitch, but that's not the point because OMG GUYS JO DUFFY APPARENTLY TIME-TRAVELED TO 2002 AND SAW ATTACK OF THE CLONES.

But why didn't he tell Lucas to make it into a good film?

Stuff like this is always neat- there's a couple references in the Han Solo Adventures, like the "I prefer to shoot first" bit, that is pretty wild, when read post-SE, for example.

May I also point out that she also gave us a red-headed, force-using, apprentice to an Imperial Sith who wanted to kill Luke Skywalker? She was also a love interest, though she started out that way, instead of becoming that later. All five or six years before Mara Jade was ever seen.

Her full name is Mary Jo Duffy, by the way, to back up Pablo's comment...
