Has that ever been made completely clear in any source?
Why doesn't he land on Yavin and start massacring rebels?
Why doesn't he track the pilot with the force strength?
It makes movie sense...but is all that logical for Vader as we know him?
I mean, given the size of rebel base...I wouldn't think Vader would be all that scared of them.
I'd be more scared of Palpatine than that rebel base.
thoughts?

Vader isn't scared of Palpatine.
But frankly, Vader in a TIE fighter can be shot down especially a damaged one. It would be an ignominious end for The Dark Lord of the Sith but a hundred rebels shooting at him would probably bring an end even to the Dark Lord of the Sith. Remember, Jedi can destroy entire armies but only if they have plans and preparation for it.
More likely, Han would blow Vader's damaged TIE out of the sky.

I really don't think it needed to be made clear. Honestly, it's common sense why Darth Vader didn't fly down and attack the Rebel outpost. One man and a damaged TIE against an entire military base? Did you see how many Rebels were at Han and Luke's award ceremony? Even Vader knows when the odds are against him.

Yeah, I mean...I dunno, is this a joke or an attempt to illustrate something in order to get at a separate point entirely?

He was dizzy. And outnumbered.
Actually, he crash landed on a nearby planet and was stuck there for two weeks. Byt he time he got away, the base was abandoned.

Didn't he return with the newly launched Executor and finally end the Rebel occupation at Yavin IV?

Actually Imperial forces did land and destroy the Rebel outpost...well they ran out the Rebels. General Jan Dodonna, giving the brieifing at Yavin and one of the best Rebel Generals is captured at Yavin.

Given the large chance of compounding the disaster of the Death Star blown with his own death, Vader found it wiser to regroup some forces. Yavin was the beginning of the end of the Empire only in retrospect.
It fits very well with Vader from that era. Anakin Skywalker/Non-Suited Vader would have gone in all guns blazing.
Note that Non-Suited Vader also got all of his limbs chopped off.

Vader's TIE was more than damaged. He was hard pressed to get it to Vaal. He couldn't have safely entered Yavin IV's airspace even if he wanted to. And chilling out on one of the other backwater moons of Yavin wouldn't have been great either. He had to get to an Imperial outpost.

Actually, I'm really not.
I caught the end of ANH on TV and it just struck a chord.
We are talking about one of if not the most powerful being in the history of the galaxy...and he knows it.
I didn't mean to insinuate that he go in, "guns blazing" on some kind of kamikaze run. But he could've hid behind Yavin...crashed on the farside of the Jungle from the base...when they start sending out search teams...pick them off a few at a time.
either the rebels freak out and abandon the base, or they throw everything they've got at him...including Luke Skywalker.
I wonder if he might have come across a certain black temple in the middle of a lake...dang.
i guess you could say "lesson's in impatience, learned"...but Vader is also no simple Jedi...and the darkside could probably offset some of that lack of planning.
And yes, look at that throne room at the end...do you think Vader would tremble at looking at them? How many were seasoned combat soldiers? Jedi? Old men and idealistic kids...a young rebellion...by Hoth it was significantly more threatening...but Yavin...I guess I have an inflated view of the Dark Lord.
__________
One thought I had...it may have been a political move.
He wasn't going to alleviate the disastrous reality of the Death Star project's demise by eliminating the rebel threat for them...he wanted Tarkin's ambitions and his cadre of supporters to feel the complete failure...and that included an established "known" rebel world smiling back at the Empire...if only so briefly.
Vader can take a jab at Tarkin in the grave.
And moreover, by returning with Executor...he does the deed in a way more in line with his tactical and political methods.
Fleet and Command Ships 1, Death Stars 0
________________
Looking at it strickly from the point of view of the movie...as it stood, alone, in 1977...the fly away makes perfect sense...the good guys win...the single bad guy doesn't really stand a chance against them...he runs away to fight another day.
But since then, the power of that particular Sith Lord has been inflated, while the "strength" of the rebel presence has been portrayed as rather "meager".
Properly motivated...he could've owned them all!
I think, having no confidence in the idea of Death Star plays a significant part in his decision to leave.
He's not going to allow the DS to become a ultra-expensive insertion vehicle for a Sith strike force of one.

I still don't really see the sense in Vader singlehandedly trying to take on the entire Yavin base. Even if he did try a guerilla strategy, its not like the Rebellion was going to stay there that long anyway. Their secret base was no longer secret, and they stayed there anyway for a shot at the Death Star as well, after that, it was time to leave. There was blockades, and depending on how many sources are cited, the Executor is involved several times, but otherwise, the Rebels were going to be gone.
Although that might be a funny image- Luke, Han and Chewie are at the award ceremony, everybody salutes- then Vader walks in. Everybody's stunned for a few seconds, then they start shooting, five minutes, maybe half of them are dead from richochets, but the rest of the shots have left a lot of holes in Vader's suit.

Put that's just it...funny image...but not far off what people may be imagining.
I could see Vader being a "nightmare in the Jungle"...a persistent terror that presses closer and closer to the base.
And you're right...the rebels wouldn't be there forever...all the more incentive to get down there and AT LEAST collect intelligence on this "force sensitive"...it was probably a gamble to assume coming back with a fleet would be in time.
________
dunno...seconding guessing the Dark Lord is probably a game you can play in lots of places.

It just seems like heading for Yavin like that would be reckless and unnecessarily difficult. Taking on a couple hundred enemies seems pretty suicidal. I mean, maybe he could somehow make it through, but it wouldn't do much good. Honestly, I don't think Vader would care enough about the Empire to so needlessly risk his life like that. Move on, get your army behind you, and come back later to get your revenge.
It's fun to think of these characters as superpowerful, steam-rolling through dozens of soldiers. But the post-Anakin Vader is rarely seen acting reckless or out of control.

Is it out of control?
A group of rebel's against "his" Empire have destroyed the pet superweapon meant to put the final nail in galactic opposition. And not only that, but they found a force-sensitive to do it.
We all essentially agree that Vader is not "afraid"...I don't think anyone think's he's furious about what happened (well...maybe ticked that he got out-flown).
Addressing the situation head on...Vader's presence on Yavin IV could've been invaluable to prematurely curtailing the rebellion...perhaps if the rebels are worried about him, they can't celebrate their triumph and draw attention and support to their cause...maybe they aren't evacuating Yavin with necessary efficiency and get crushed when an Imperial force comes to find out what happened to the giant money ball.
As it stands, fate took another road...and I am comfortable with that...but understanding Vader's thought processes in that moment would be interesting.
