This is something that may need to be answered by an insider, but what the hey, this is a thread for comics questions and I have one:

How is it determined which creators (writers, artists, etc.) work on each issue or series? Obviously, Legacy is the baby of John and Jan, but did they come up with the idea and pitch it to the Dark Horse editors? Or did Randy Stradley call them up and say, "Hey, you're the most popular Star Wars comics creators. Write me a series set in the future!"

Then, when Jan needs a break from the daily grind, how is it decided who the guest artist for that issue will be? Does Colin Wilson just show up unannounced at the DH offices and show them how awesome he is at drawing spaceships and aliens and the editors say "We'll find you a couple of issues to draw!"?

Yep Dancin, you're going to have to hope John drops by to answer that one.

I'd hazard a guess it's done by extensive forward planning, then editors can approach artists and secure the deals.

The ESSENTIAL answer is that it falls to the editor. If my memory serves -- and it doesn't always -- when the topic of re-starting the SW line again with new titles at DH came up, Jan and I were finishing up our SW REPUBLIC run. My memory is that I suggested jumping down the timeline to Randy and he agreed and Jan decided she would go with it as well.

Randy, generally, picks the teams on the issues. For example, when it's not Jan on an issue, Randy decides who is. Sometimes he has seen samples or knows the artist from other work that they've done. He also picks the cover artist, btw, and they all agree on the subject matter after the artist has sent sketches. All of this -- including choice of personnel -- has to be approved by LFL as well. I may make suggestions as to artist or cover ideas but ut's Randy's decision. As you can see, Randy really does have quite an artistic influence on the books.

I've got this hilarious image of Randy picking up the big red phone and bellowing "WRITE ME A COMIC!" into it now.

Thanks for the info, John. It's always interesting to hear about how things work behind the scenes.

Question:

What old (ie. Not current comics - Legacy/KOTOR/Dark Times/Rebellion) comics are worth picking up?

All of them grin

But for what has the most impact on what's currently being published in novels and elsewhere, these:

Vol 7 of the Star Wars Marvel TPBs, minimum. The whole set is best

Dark Empire I and Dark Empire II TPBs. Get the recent reprint to get End of Empire included.

Both Tales of the Jedi omnibuses (Omnibi?)

Collecting by single issues requires dedication, money, or both. You might find that your local library has several TPBs in their collection, likely in the Young Adult or Teen sections. Mine does. That's great for 'try before you buy'.

Based on quality of artwork, dialogue, interest of storyline and overall worth, I would recommend: Outlander, By the Emperor's Hand, Open Season, Twilight -- a good range of standalones.

For the Rogue Squadron series, the best are the first and last third. There's some collections you need to avoid.

My utilisation of complex locution to ask what's more pathetic, fans who worship their
movie actors, or the actors who couldn't give a damn, is more a reflection of my own
superincumbent mental actuity than any circumscribed lexicon. Don't you agree?
