Literature Forum Moderators: The2ndQuest, Rogue_Follower, Havac, and Master_Keralys
Last updated: August 10, 2008
This thread summarizes the rules and guidelines of the Jedi Council Literature Forum ("Lit forum.") If you have any questions, comments, or concerns, post them in this thread, or Private Message a moderator directly.
Literature Forum Rules
First and foremost, you must follow the Jedi Council Forums Rules and the Terms of Service. See the Harassment Policy for any harassment issues: emotional, verbal, sexual, etc. Additionally, the following Literature forum-specific rules apply:
- Obey the Literature forum Spoiler Policy (see below.)
- Do not make personal attacks on authors, artists, or other VIPs. "Author bashing" will not be tolerated.
- The Literature forum follows the Lucasfilm canon policy (see here for details.) Do not debate canon.
- Do not link to "competing" fan message boards, unless they have exclusive content, such as VIP interviews or previews. Linking to official message boards, like the Official Site message boards or the Dark Horse Comics boards, is allowed.
- Check the Literature forum index or run a search before creating a new thread, as may be an already existing thread on the topic. Redundant threads will be locked.
- Do not post "favorites" or "least favorites" threads.
- Do not post pure speculation or fan fiction threads.
- Do not post "versus" threads.
Spoiler Policy
Definition of a spoiler:
A "spoiler" is considered any information about any unreleased Star Wars property (film, TV, novel, comic, etc.) which has not been specifically mentioned by LFL or one of its designated licensees. Officially disseminated, publicly available information is not considered to be a spoiler. However, be courteous when posting and err on the side of caution.
General Spoiler Policy
- Use the official discussion threads whenever possible.
- Always be courteous to those who do not wish to be spoiled. Use highlight-to-read text for major spoilers.
- When posting a spoilers-allowed thread, put a spoiler warning in the title. However, do not put spoilers in thread title itself.
- Absolutely no spoilers may be posted in threads marked "no spoilers."
- If you receive an advance copy of a novel or other publication in an official capacity (e.g. reviewer, translator, bookstore worker, etc.), you are forbidden from posting major spoilers prior to release date. Small spoilers, however, are allowed. Also, if you received your copy early by "legitimate" means (e.g. Amazon shipped early, bookstore put it out early, etc.) you may post spoilers.
- When in doubt, ask a moderator.
Novel Spoiler Policy Timeline
The novel spoiler period lasts 30 days after the release of a novel. During (and before) that time, spoilers should be kept in designated spoilers-allowed areas.
- One month prior to release, an official, stickied novel discussion thread will be posted. This thread will be spoilers-allowed. Prior to release, all spoilers should be kept in this thread.
- On the day of release, a review thread will be posted. This thread will be spoilers-allowed.
- After release, users may PM a moderator to request permission to post a spoilers-allowed thread. Threads created without moderator permission will be locked.
- Two weeks after release, spoilers may be posted in any thread, so long as they are designated as spoilers and written in highlight-to-read (HTR) text. Users may now create spoilers-allowed threads without moderator permission, so long as they are properly marked.
- One month after release, the spoiler period ends.
Punishment
The punishment for disobeying the spoiler policy is dependent on the "severity" of the spoiler and the way in which it was spoiled. A minor spoiler may warrant an edit and a warning, whereas a major spoiler could result in several days of ban-time.
For reference, here is the old spoiler policy thread.
Literature Forum Code of Conduct
The Code of Conduct is intended to clarify expectations of posting quality. While it is a set of guidelines, not hard rules, the Code should still be followed by all users.
- Treat your fellow posters with respect. Likewise, treat VIPs, even those who are not users on this site, with respect.
- Do not state opinions, assumptions, "personal canon," or rumors as facts. Identify them for what they are.
- Be prepared to back up your points with evidence and facts. Likewise, be prepared to explain the reasoning for your criticism.
- Read a book or comic before you review it. Withhold final judgement of a work until you have read it.
- Do not sidetrack threads with personal confrontations, conversations, or arguments.
- Your posts should contribute to a discussion, not detract from it.
For background on the Code, see the Code of Conduct Discussion thread.

My personal exp, search fields are absolutely useless. Useless. You really can't search for the most simple requests.

My utilisation of complex locution to ask what's more pathetic, fans who worship their movie actors, or the actors who couldn't give a damn, is more a reflection of my own superincumbent mental actuity than any circumscribed lexicon. Don't you agree?

If you type "site:boards.theforce.net/literature [your search term]" into Google, it usually works pretty well.
The forum search (next to "Private Messages") has been bamboozled for a long time, and I doubt it'll ever be working, so don't even try it. However, there should be a Google search bar under the banner where you can select *Web, *boards.theforce.net, or *This Forum, and then run your query. IIRC it's the same as "site:boards.theforce.net/literature [your search term]."

Yeah, the google search bars added to the forums within the past few months are much more reliable than the rather-spotty "built-in" snowboards one.

Are HTR spoilers within designated spoiler threads mandatory? I can understand why people would want them, but if someone wants to be avoid being spoiled then it's only logical to avoid spoiler threads in the first place. Maybe HTR spoilers should be mandatory the first day or two in case a person doesn't know that they've started coming in but once they do anyone who doesn't want to be spoiled won't be.

HTR is not mandatory in threads marked spoilers allowed. If something is a major spoiler, you can HTR for courtesy, but it's generally not needed.

I am deeply disappointed by the decrease in yellow and black at the top of the page. My Lit is no longer the same.

This is just incentive to get him to post more so that there's still bumblebees... err, I mean, yellow letters on black backgrounds all over the place.

So we'll be getting stickies when, about a week after the book comes out?
