	Welcome to the Star Wars Expanded Universe! If you're just jumping in, you might have a lot of questions - who the important characters are, what books or comics to start with, and so on. This is the thread to ask them. Right here in this post we have recommendations for you on where to start and a guide to comic-buying, and as users ask questions, the most common questions and answers will be gathered into a resource that is also a part of this thread. For more detailed info (but also spoilers, so beware!) you can find a lot of useful information on the Wookieepedia, the Star Wars wiki. At the bottom of this post are a list of commonly used abbreviations that you may find useful. Have fun! With such a plethora of titles available for Star Wars literature, it can often be a daunting task to determine where a good place to begin is. There really are a number of great places to begin, but where and what these are can vary from person to person, since everyone has their own opinions (you're bound to find at least one person or loves or hates any particular title). In this thread you'll find a summary of the most commonly given suggestions and approaches for exploring the Expanded Universe: 1) General Introduction 2) Choose an Era 3) Chronological Order -General Introduction There are a handful of titles that are usually the first to be recommended by other fans as good starting places- this is, besides the actual quality of the work, most likely because these titles are either standalone stories or they are more connected to the films/ do not rely heavily on characters & events from other books. These titles are: -The "Thrawn Trilogy": a series set 5 years after Return of the Jedi and basically was the launching point of the modern publishing material. Probably the most often-recommended starting point in the EU. Stars the heroes of the Classic Trilogy. (Heir to the Empire, Dark Force Rising & The Last Command) -The X-Wing series: A fan favorite, this time following the exploits of Wedge Antilles and his fighter pilots shortly after Return of the Jedi through 9 years after Endor. (Series I: Rogue Squadron, Wedge's Gamble, The Krytos Trap & The Bacta War; Series II: Wraith Squadron, Iron Fist & Solo Command; Series III: Isard's Revenge; Series IV: Starfighters of Adumar) -Shadows of the Empire: This "bridge novel" covers the timespan and events between The Empire Strikes Back and Return of the Jedi. Features Vader, Luke, Leia, Lando and more. -Cloak of Deception: This political thriller sets the stage for the events of The Phantom Menace. Stars Qui-Gon and Obi-wan. -Darth Maul: Shadow Hunter: A more action oriented story also set just prior to The Phantom Menace. -Outbound Flight: Set between The Phantom Menace and Attack of the Clones and featuring (though not starring) Obi-wan & Anakin in a prequel to the various Thrawn-related books. -Shatterpoint: The first Clone Wars novel written, focusing on Mace Windu and the horrors of war. -Labyrinth of Evil: The official lead-in to Revenge of the Sith! Also available (alongside the ROTS Novelization and Dark Lord) in a "Dark Lord Trilogy" collection) -Dark Lord: The Rise of Darth Vader: Set in the aftermath of ROTS as Darth Vader obsessess over Order 66 survivors while adjusting to his new body. Also available (alongside the ROTS Novelization and Labyrinth of Evil) in a "Dark Lord Trilogy" collection) [/li] -The Tales of the Jedi series: This comic series is set some 4,000 years before the films, and, with it's primary story arc (which starts with Knights of the Old Republic-not to be confused with the game or actual comic series of the same name), delves into the ancient Jedi and Sith conflicts. This fan-favorite series also acts as backstory to the popular Knights of the Old Republic video games. (Knights of the Old Republic, The Freedon Nadd Uprising (if you can find it), Dark Lords of the Sith, The Sith War & Redemption) -The Knights of the Old Republic series: This comic series, set after Tales of the Jedi, but before the Knights of the Old Republic video games follows a padawan on the run, set against the backdrop of the emerging Mandalorian Wars. -The Clone Wars comics: These highly-recommended comics follow heroes new and old through the turbulent Clone Wars, from the Battle of Kamino to a damned-fool idealistic crusade...(Volume 1: The Defense of Kamino, Volume 2: Victories & Sacrifices, Volume 4: Light & Dark, Volume 3: Last Stand on Jabiim, Volume 5: The Best Blades, Volume 6: On the Fields of Battle, Volume 7: When They Were Brothers, Volume 8: The Last Siege, The Final Truth, Volume 9: Endgame) -The New Jedi Order: Vector Prime: Set 25 years after A New Hope, this novel launches a new era of events as Luke and the New Republic find themselves under assault by an invading, extra-galactic race. A good jumping-on point towards the current novels, though you may want to brush up on some of the broader strokes of events that have transpired in the interim. -Invasion comics: A new comics series set in the New Jedi Order era, written to be enjoyed even by readers who haven't read the NJO book series. -Legacy of the Force: Betrayal: The first book of a new series set in the aftermath of the events from The New Jedi Order series, as both a new civil war and a new Sith Lord threaten to emerge. Another jumping-on point in closer proximity to the current novels, though once again you may wish to brush up on some of the broader strokes of events that have transpired previously. -Fate of the Jedi: Outcast: The first book of the current novel series. Can be seen as a jumping-on point, though FOTJ's plot is related, at least in part, to the story of Legacy of the Force. -Legacy comics: Set over 100 years after the movies, this ongoing series follows a descendant of Luke Skywalker as he struggles with new conflict in the galaxy: new Sith, a new Empire at war with itself, a new Rebellion, new smugglers, you name it. One of the most popular Star Wars comics titles around. -Choose an Era Another popular approach is to select an era or timeframe you're most interested in reading about, and focus on the titles from there. It was also meant to be a sort of "jumping on point" for new readers (starting with the first book, Vector Prime), however, to get the fullest enjoyment out of the series, most fans suggest either holding off on this series until after you've read more of the other SW novels, or, at the very least, reading The Essential Chronology or The New Essential Chronology to get an overview of the events that occured between ROTJ and the NJO. Legacy Era Containing the Legacy of the Force novel series comprised of 9 books (set 40 years after A New Hope), the current 9-book series Fate of the Jedi and the ongoing Legacy comic series (set about 100 years after the LOTF series). Legacy of the Force acts as a very good jumping-on point to the current novels (though you still might want to consider breezing through the New Essential Chronology first to get a little more of the backstory). Fate of the Jedi is a follow-up to Legacy of the Force. Meanwhile, the Legacy series, set so far ahead on the timeline, is almost a blank slate when it comes to backstory found in existing sources, so it too can be enjoyed fairly easily without any backreading. However, if your looking for some backstory, in broad strokes, to the LOTF and FOTJ, without reading the New Essential Chronology, take a look at Traitor and the Dark Nest Trilogy. Now, there are obviously other titles in each era beyond those highlights that you may enjoy as well (be it the character interaction of the Corellian Trilogy,the military battles of the Black Fleet Crisis or the action-packed nature of the comic Crimson Empire), so feel free to look into those titles as well! To assist you in that endeavor, you may find the following timeline reference sources of use (or, you can always check the inside covers of a recently published novel or comic collection): General Timelines: Star Wars Expanded Universe Timeline The Ultimate Timeline at TheForce.Net Timeline Universe's Star Wars Expanded Universe Timeline Del Rey's Star Wars Novel Timeline Dark Horse Comics Star Wars Timeline TF.N Book Reviews Listing (Chronological Order) Detailed Timelines (w/summaries): Time Tales Timeline Gold Unauthorized Star Wars Chronology Era Specific Timelines: The Ultimate Attack of the Clones & the Clone Wars Timeline Timeline at The Unofficial Clone Wars Site -Chronological Order The third most commonly suggested approach to the EU is to experience everything (or, at the very least, a specific era) in chronological order. This could be just the books, just the comics, or everything, depending on your particular tastes. For this approach, just follow any of the links above to get started ::) Now, those aren't the only ways to experience the EU - try looking into titles focusing on your favorite character, for example, or read the books in the order of publication (to get a sense of how the characters and events have developed as they were created). Feel free to discuss the particulars of these and other recommendations here. And, finally, if you are a member of the Star Wars Fan Club, there is some EU material you have access to online through your Hyperspace service: -Hyperspace Fiction: Short stories from current and out-of-print sources republished online, with new additions twice a month. -Hyperspace Webstrips: Original ongoing series of comic strips are joined by classic strips from the 70's and 80's. And, as always, if you have a question about anything in the EU, just ask- someone will know the answer. What to Know About Comics Comics contain some of the best material in the Expanded Universe, but to the newcomer, they can be fairly confusing. Here's some things anyone interested in picking up comics should know: 1. Star Wars comics are presently published by Dark Horse Comics (DHC) in 2 forms: monthly issues that contain 22 pages of story with a general retail price of $2.99. Then there are the collections of the monthly issues - known as trade paperbacks (TPBs), these tend to be published 6-9 months after the issues have been out. 2. Comic release dates tend to change and fluctuate due to delays in completing the art or in printing or distributing the issues; thus it is important you know where to find accurate information: a) Comics are distributed by Diamond Distributing, and their site should have accurate lists of what is due for the coming week. b) Another recommended information source is Midtown Comics. The confirmed list for the next week should become available Thursday afternoon US time. c) DHC's website is useful as a general guide to their products but for exact dates you are best to stick with the two sources above. 3. In terms of availability, comics shipped on Wednesday will be available in comic shops in US/Canada on Wednesday, they should arrive in the UK and Ireland by Thursday. 4. You should also be aware that: Tentative: list of unconfirmed releases for the next week Confirmed: list of confirmed releases for the next week 5. As a general rule, always be wary of the tentative list. But just because an item is on the confirmed does not mean it will turn up in your local comic shop, should you have one. It will depend on what issues the shop orders. 6. For TPBs, local comic stores may be able to get these anywhere from 1 week to 2 months ahead of the online booksellers like Amazon. 7. Also TPBs are not like books, they have finite print runs and once a TPB is out of print expect the price to go up in places like Amazon Marketplace or Ebay. If there is a deluxe item like the Luke Skywalker book, the advice is buy while it is available because it won't always be! 8. Finally - delays are inevitable. Issues are created in a long production chain and if anything goes wrong, a delay can occur easily. While DHC have had some legendary delays on SW comics, they have also done legendary months where some 7-8 SW comics have been published! The best way to deal with delays is to assume the positive rather than the negative. 	Kyp - this list doesn't really break down well, but essentially anything published between 1991 and 1999 was on the Bantam contract. Del Rey published everything that came out 1999 and after, as well as the very earliest EU (the Brian Daley Han Solo trilogy and so on). The abbreviations are a good idea. Once I get the NJO/LOTF starter guides assembled, I hope to update that document a little. 	Great thread, Master Keralys. I have had absolutely no idea what IIRC meant for the past year. Now I am not new to the EU, but I have a question about Legacy comics. Is there something I should read prior? I have read the entire NJO and LoTF as well as most of the Bantam stuff. This would be the first comic series I got into. Am I missing something important? Again, thanks for this thread. I really didn't want to throw this question as an aside in another thread and possibly derail the discussion.
