Alright I took a break from I, Jedi at about 250 pages left and finally am getting back into it. I was going to read the black fleet crisis, but I think I am just gonna skip to the HoT Duology. I was wondering if after that I should just jump into the NJO series. I kind of want to get into more luke and mara and the twins.

I've always struggled with The HOT. So I just jumped right into the NJO of which I'm an giant fan. The series sets itself apart so quickly from the earlier Bantam era that you can just start anytime.

Also on a side note, what is a Quirt? I get that its some kind of small creature? Or something that Tavira has, but what exactly is it?

Is this the Quirt you're looking for?

No, he's talking about this kind of quirt. It's basically a whip Tavira carries around:

Anyway, I personally loved the HoT. It was long for a two-book duology but there was a ton of great stories and IMO the side-plots were the best part (especially the Car'das/Aing-tii one in VotF). I highly recommend you read the books before going into NJO, especially if you're looking for more Luke and Mara.

Wow I honestly thought it was some kind of little creature. I should have read a little more closely I guess.

I REALLY struggled to get through the HOT, but to each his own. It just did'nt have enough action for me. It seemed as though it had no direction, merely dragging out remnants of TTT to no avail. The Car'das stuff as well. It was like hey lets take a seemingly insignificant character that we mentioned a bit earlier and make him into this really pivotal character. I did'nt get it. The re-emergance of Thrawn albeit an impostor, or the hint that there could possibly be a clone in the future was cool, but that could have been summed up in a short story. Instead we get two gigantic books! In summation, I read these books as a precursor to SQ and ultimately to the NJO, but I would'nt do it again.

Zahn does have the tendency to take something mentioned once or twice in one book and write a whole book about it (look at Outbound Flight). The books were definitely long, I think VotF is the longest Star Wars book ever written paperback-wise. I heard it was originally intended to be a trilogy but for some reason they got cut down into two books. Still, while the books are slow, I found myself very interested in the various plots, moreso than TTT. I guess it just depends on your interests.

Denning does the same thing, too. He takes a very minor plot point from Star By Star (Raynar and the two Dark Jedi) and turns it into an entire trilogy.

Maybe it's just me, but Denning tends to magnify things way out of proportion to how they were originally introduced. For example, in The Unseen Queen, the first chapter was dedicated to black membrosia smugglers. But membrosia was only casually mentioned in The Joiner King, which threw me off because I had forgotten about it by the time TUQ was released. Something that significant should have been more clearly mentioned in the first book.

And then in The Swarm War, the Chiss are suddenly firing "maser beams" with no mention of what they are, what their characteristics are and how they are different from your typical blaster or turbolaser. And they were never mentioned again outside of that book.

And don't get me started on the term "rodder," which is never mentioned in any book except Denning's TDN and LOTF books.

I think Zahn's style in The HOT is not only fairly slow going but it's quite dry as well. Something Denning really isn't. I think that's how Denning got away with stretching DNT so much without me particularly noticing. I find that Denning books tend to really drive hard from plot point to plot point. Fairly visceral stuff. Zahn not so much. Sure Zahn's crescendos are massive but much patience is needed to arrive there. Denning keeps you reading with a dark, sometimes morbid fascination.

I like Denning. So far, he has never disappointed me. And since it takes a lot of skill to keep me interested in a novel that isn't linked to the prequels, that says quite a lot^^. I absolutely loved Tatooine Ghost, and Dark Nest was cool.

Hand of Thrawn was boring, it dragged a lot and many subplots were ultimately utterly pointless (Rogue Squadron and the old woman on Bothan were needed WHY? Same for the oh so dangerous mission of Han and Lando to Bastion). Like the TTT it was just a lot of running around, accidentally ending up in the right places and Zahn's OCs saving the galaxy in the end, while the big three were just bystanders. It was better than the TTT though. (and no, I don't hate all of Zahn's books. I liked Survivor's Quest and Allegiance, and Outbound Flight was decent, but the TTT was my biggest disappointment so far)

I'm a long time comic ignorer when it comes to Star Wars. I've read 90% of the novels out there, played most star wars games, and have read *some* comics, but for the most part I have ignored them because I found them to usually be shallow compared to the novels.

But over the last few years, I've gained interest in them. The crossovers with legacy characters in the latest novels had me go out and buy a few of the first issues of Legacy. But I'm really clueless when it comes to the comics and what to read and what to start with. I love spending time reading the star wars wiki and reading about the comic characters and it seems to be a much bigger part of the star wars world than ever before. I feel like I'm missing out by not reading the comics now.

The only comics I've read and really enjoyed were the ancient Tales of the Jedi ones(and sequels) and Dark Empire and its sequels. I loved those and even have audio book versions of them(which I love even more). I've read a few others here and there, but none really stick with me.

I'm wondering what to start with. I've just bought a set of 1-32 of legacy off ebay that I'm eagerly awaiting.

My main interests are legacy and vector. and vector crosses over a half dozen series, so I'll want to read all of those for sure. I've also read that some of the series that contain vector(like rebellion) are sequels to previous series(like empire). So should I read empire before reading rebellion?

I'm gonna start with legacy because I've already bought it.

What should I get next after I read legacy? Should I try to read a whole series or jump around with a few books here and there?

basgfsdgsd Why can't the comics be easier like the novels? =p

Ay suggestions on where to go next would be highly appreciated!

I blew through the first book of TTT. I thought there was enough suspense in it to keep me going, mostly on Leia's part and the nogri who served Thrawn.(Didn't actually see that going the way it di.) And I really wanted to know if I was right on how Thrawn was getting info. I'll have to remember Denning. I think I, Jedi is slow at the beginning and after he leaves the academy. But when Corran was still there I could not put it down.

OH I was wondering about Legacy as well, how many issues are there and what not, I just learned about it recently. Also I was wondering more about Fate of the Jedi. I orginally thought that is what legacy was, but after searching a wiki about it I have some interest granted it will take me awhile to actually get there if I plan to read HOT, NJO, and Legacy of the force.

There are like 35 issues of Legacy comic so far and its not done.

Theres also the Legacy of the Force novel series which is complete.

Fate of the Jedi only has 1 book out so far, and its pretty good(just read it).

and yes, you have a long way to go if you plan to read HOT and NJO first.

NJO is 20 books long and some of them are pretty horrible and the whole storyline is somewhat mediocre, but so much character development happens throughout the series that it is pretty much required reading if you want to read anything that takes place after it.

You may know of this title but if you liked Tales of the Jedi (which I love), you really should take up Knights of the old Republic Comics. It's really up there with Legacy in quality and is of course part 1 of Vector. It takes place 40 years after The Sith War.

I"m currently reading Vision of the Future and am enjoying the HoT duology. I get everyone's points about the lack of action, but I agree with others that some of the side plots are still highly interesting. Sometimes though, I feel there's too much going on and it can get hard to keep track of everyone and everything taking place...then all of a sudden something totally new is introduced and I find I'm flipping back to see if I missed something.

Actually, it was originally one book- The Hand of Thrawn. But it got to be so long they split it up into a duology. However, Zahn and Stackpole collaborated in a way that I, Jedi is intended to be something of a third, middle book to HOT and make it a thematic trilogy.

KOTOR, the Republic run of Clone Wars volumes and Legacy are the strongest offerings out there. As far as your interests go, KOTOR kicks off the Vector storyline, while many of the Clone Wars stories were written or illustrated by the main Legacy team so if you enjoy the style of Legacy you'll likely enjoy the CW material too, and there's even a couple crossover characters there as well. And the CW material transitions into the Dark Times series which is also a brief part of Vector.

I would say reading some of Empire before Rebellion is recommended, so far as Rebellion as a series goes. Rebellion Vol 1 in particular is a sequel to Empire Volume 7, for example (Rebellion was essentially a retitled Empire series- they even kept the Empire numbering in the fine print on in the inside; ditto with Republic & Dark Times).

However, you don't need to read any of the Empire or Rebellion stories to understand Rebellion's Vector story. It stands alone pretty well. You just might miss out on the emotional impact of a recurring supporting character's death.

But if you're gonna look into Empire & Rebellion, Empire Volumes 2, 3, 6 & 7 are the good ones (though you might not want to read Empire Volume 6 before Clone Wars Volume 3 as it'll spoil the ending via flashbacks- though you don't ave to read it in that order, I suppose) and pretty much of all of Rebellion is solid enough a continuation, if not as spectacular as KOTOR, CW, DT & Legacy.

The distinction to remember is that there is the "Legacy era" that includes the "Legacy of the Force" novel series, the current "Fate of the Jedi" novel series and the "Legacy" comic series.

Right. doh! Don't know how I got that mixed up. But yeah, there are connections between I, Jedi and the HoT because of the proximity of their releases, Elegos being one of them.
