I'm wondering what to start with. I've just bought a set of 1-32 of legacy off ebay that I'm eagerly awaiting.

My main interests are legacy and vector. and vector crosses over a half dozen series, so I'll want to read all of those for sure. I've also read that some of the series that contain vector(like rebellion) are sequels to previous series(like empire). So should I read empire before reading rebellion?

What should I get next after I read legacy? Should I try to read a whole series or jump around with a few books here and there?

KOTOR, the Republic run of Clone Wars volumes and Legacy are the strongest offerings out there. As far as your interests go, KOTOR kicks off the Vector storyline, while many of the Clone Wars stories were written or illustrated by the main Legacy team so if you enjoy the style of Legacy you'll likely enjoy the CW material too, and there's even a couple crossover characters there as well. And the CW material transitions into the Dark Times series which is also a brief part of Vector.

I would say reading some of Empire before Rebellion is recommended, so far as Rebellion as a series goes. Rebellion Vol 1 in particular is a sequel to Empire Volume 7, for example (Rebellion was essentially a retitled Empire series- they even kept the Empire numbering in the fine print on in the inside; ditto with Republic & Dark Times).

However, you don't need to read any of the Empire or Rebellion stories to understand Rebellion's Vector story. It stands alone pretty well. You just might miss out on the emotional impact of a recurring supporting character's death.

But if you're gonna look into Empire & Rebellion, Empire Volumes 2, 3, 6 & 7 are the good ones (though you might not want to read Empire Volume 6 before Clone Wars Volume 3 as it'll spoil the ending via flashbacks- though you don't ave to read it in that order, I suppose) and pretty much of all of Rebellion is solid enough a continuation, if not as spectacular as KOTOR, CW, DT & Legacy.

I echo Quest's recommendation of Dark Times, Empire, Rebellion and most especially Republic comics as found in the Clone Wars trades. There are references to the Clone Wars comics in Legacy and some Legacy surprises would certainly be enhanced with this comic. Much of The Republic/Clone Wars was written by John Ostrander, writer of Legacy.

Ahhh the comics! I got sucked into that blackhole after I picked up the first Legacy TPB. After that I was hooked. I quickly bought up everything else that was Legacy to date and the story IMO is awesome. Now I find myself listless, craving even during those times between TPB releases. (I wait for the trades so I can justify to myself that they are REALLY not comics!) These empty pangs left me with no choice but to get back out there a check out other titles in the SW comic universe. I tried Rebellion and Dark Empire and was relatively unenthused on both accounts. KOTOR and Dark Times on the other hand, I have found are great supplements when new Legacy fodder is unavailable. In similar fashion, I went and bought up all of those TPBs to date and now...I'm just waiting. cry

That's one of the running plotlines in the series, but not the only one.

Recently i've made the decision to stand reading all the star wars novels i can get my hands on in chronological order. I've decided to start post ROTJ with the truce at Bakura and go from there. I've got my hands on all the novels from here through to the end of LOTF (as listed in the front of Invincible), and have started the long road through. However i'm beginning to think i'm going to miss out some important pieces of continuity. I've known that there are comics and young readers stories set in this period, but i didn't realize until i got to Jedi academy trilogy that if i wanted a more complete picture i'd missed something.

Herein lies the problem. Looking through the Wook i've found extensive lists of printed material but i only really want to read stuff that is important continuity wise, meaning things that are referenced in later novels and/or main character first appearances.

So far i think i need at least (in addition to the novels):
-The Rogue Squadron Comics (in omnibus form)
-The Dark Empire Trilogy
-The Junior Jedi Knights Series
-The Young Jedi Knights Series
-The Union Comics Series

If there are any other things i should be reading i'd be really happy if you could point them out to me.

Thanks.

Alright, well starting off with comics, the Dark Empire comics are definitely the most important during this time period. I'm assuming the JAT made you aware of Luke going dark, which happens in this series. The original Dark Empire is good, if controversial, and very important to the entire era. Dark Empire II is not as good but still follows on from Dark Empire, and Empire's End finishes the whole trilogy. The trilogy gets mixed reviews but you'll definitely want to read it anyway just because of the impact it has on the EU. The Crimson Empire comics directly follow Empire's End, but has a completely original cast and isn't referenced nearly as much as Dark Empire. Read them if you want to, but they're skipable if you're really strapped for cash.

The Rogue Squadron comics are a great supplement to the first few X-wing novels and introduce you to characters you meet in the books, as well as developing backstories. They take place right before the novels so keep that in mind. Some of the arcs are great, others not so much, but they're good comics overall and while there aren't really references outside of the X-wing books, you should give them a try. At the very least, get the third Omnibus. It's the most important one and sets up one of the main villains of the X-wing books.

The rest of the post-RotJ comics aren't that important and typically focus on one character or a group. Star Wars: Union focuses on the marriage of two important characters (I don't know how much you know about the EU so I don't want to spoil anything) and it's worth checking out just for that. Also, once you get through LotF be sure to check out the Legacy comics. It's one of a few ongoing comics series' by Dark Horse and takes place 130+ years after RotJ.

Now, as far as young readers books go, you have your JJK and your YJK. They're both obviously intended for kids/young adults so the writing is going to reflect that, but both series' introduce and develop characters important to the NJO and LotF. JJK slightly less so, but they're both important. This one is really up to you. The NJO doesn't do a bad job of explaining backstories but it's still a good idea to know where these characters came from. I don't know about JJK, but I know YJK can be found collected in three omnibus-style books. JJK takes place before Survivor's Quest, and YJK right after.

And you said you were looking at the timeline at the beginning of Invincible right? I don't think that timeline includes the novel Luke Skywalker and the Shadows of Mindor. It's a great stand-alone book and takes place about a year after Truce at Bakura, so if you haven't gotten it already be sure to check it out.

And that's it! Have fun in your journey through the EU!

I did the exact same thing this past year. I wanted to get into the FotJ series(before knowing what it was called) without spoilers but at the same time I wanted to know what was going on with all of the characters and who they were(more indepth than the ton of info I've read on wookieepedia) I know it's a lot to get through but I thought it was worth it (I can read extremely fast)

So these are what I read... in the order I read them

Thrawn Trilogy: Heir to the Empire
Thrawn Trilogy: Dark Force Rising
Thrawn Trilogy: The Last Command
Dark Empire I
Dark Empire II
Dark Empire III: Empire's End
Jedi Academy Trilogy: Jedi Search
Jedi Academy Trilogy: Dark Apprentice
Jedi Academy Trilogy: Champions of the Force
I, Jedi
Vector Prime
Dark Tide I: Onslaught
Dark Tide II: Ruin
Agents of Chaos I: Hero's Trial
Agents of Chaos II: Jedi Eclipse
Balance Point
Edge of Victory I: Conquest
Edge of Victory II: Rebirth
Star by Star
Dark Journey
Enemy Lines I: Rebel Dream Adams
Enemy Lines II: Rebel Stand
Traitor
Destiny's Way
Force Heretic I: Remnant
Force Heretic II: Refugee
Force Heretic III: Reunion
The Final Prophecy
The Unifying Force
Dark Nest I: The Joiner King
Dark Nest II: The Unseen Queen
Dark Nest III: The Swarm War
LotF Betrayal
LotF Bloodlines
LotF Tempest
LotF Exile
LotF Sacrifice
LotF Inferno
LotF Fury
LotF Revelation
LotF Invincible

after the second FotJ book comes out I'm going to go back and read the Corellian Trilogy, Black Fleet Crisis and YJK. I kicked around the Crimson Empire comic a bit too but dind't really like it. There are a few other comics that I read too but I can't remember where they fit in.. like Star Wars: Union which was where 2 important characters got married

I also started Millennium Falcon last night but I might drop it for Outcast unless I'm convinced it actually has anything to do with the plot progression as a whole.

Oh, it has. There were a couple of MF references in Omen that surprised me.

Still digging around the ancient EU, personally, read Children of the Jedi (it wasn't SO bad, it obviously is dated and the love story was meh, but it also had some saving graces^^). I rather liked Callista (especially in Murder in Slushtime), so I'm going to read the other two books of her 'Trilogy' too. That's Darksaber and Planet of Twilight, right?

EDIT: Does anybody have an idea what book "Sturm über Tatooine" (Storm over Tatooine) written by KJA could be? The German translation came out 1997. I did some digging around my local library and can't make head or tails what that's supposed to be.

Y'all are missing out on Kyle Katarn if you don't read the Dark Forces graphic novels as well. They're partly set post-RotJ.

damn... I guess I'm finishing MF then lol and I just picked up a copy of Outcast during lunch too lol
and hmm not sure about those

I'll check those out. I like Kyle a lot and was disappointed in how short the Star Wars Tales comic featuring him was

"Sturm über Tatooine" is the German translation of Tales from the Mos Eisley Cantina, according to the Wook. That's the collection of stories based on the cantina scene (Greedo, the Bith Band, etc.).

Meh, the Dark Forces books are OK but not that great. Then again, I was never a fan Dietz's works. In the end though, the best way to get Kyle Katarn love is through the Dark Forces/Jedi Knight games.

I've read the NJO and LOTJ and a smattering of the bantam era books previously and am now trying to pull it all together. But i must say from the Truce at Bakura through to I, Jedi, (where i'm up to now which includes the X-wing series, HTE, COPL and JA) would have to be the most enjoyable era i've looked into. The diversity of the stories and characters and that feeling that everything is somehow new and fresh is just awesome. Tatooine Ghost gets a special mention because its essentially a giant retcon and while i liked the premise the actual execution was a little boring, but seeing a little extra Thrawn is always fun.

I've never actually read any of the books from I,Jedi through to the hand of Thrawn (apart from Darksaber) so am excited but apprehensive because i know there are some truly infamous books hidden in there!

I'm also waiting on the paperback for Shadows of Mindor so it can fit with all the other books.

Thanks for the great advice, TFN rocks!

Ah I see, well I'm glad you're enjoying it all. happy The Shadows of Mindor paperback won't be out until sometime early next year, that's a pretty long wait. I can understand wanting to get only paperbacks, my hardcovers stick out like sore thumbs on my bookshelf. I only have three (SoM included) but oh well.

As far is Crimson empire goes i'll probably pick it up when it gets omnibused (is that even a word?). Is Nom Anor the only character that gets back into the larger EU even though it's as a retcon?

I am actually reading legacy and it is in my mind the best EU creation ever (big call, i know), also read KOTOR until the major plot wrapped up (# 36 i think), which was also very good.

I also just picked up all three X-wing omnibus' for $50 shipped, they're second hand but look to be in pretty good condition, very happy.
