Yeah, the size difference was a supreme bummer when I got all the NJO paperbacks in hardcover (they were my initial SFBC order since most were free when you signed up).

Does anyone know the name of the bar that Obiwan and Anakin go into to find Zam? Well whatever it is, there should be a "Tales From" that place. I think that would be cool.

It's called the Outlander Club, and yep there are a lot of strange-looking folk in there. Unfortunately it's unlikely that Del Rey will ever come out with anthology books the way Bantam did, we're currently having a discussion about it in this thread.

For those discussing the comics series' above, you should remember to take note of the old Marvel series too.

In the 70s and 80s, Marvel was the company producing Star Wars comics. They had a major series, simply called "Star Wars", that ran for a total of 107 monthly issues, 3 annual issues, and a related 4-issue miniseries. The 107 issues ran from 1977 to 1986 and included A New Hope (issues 1-6) and The Empire Strikes Back (issues 39-44). Return of the Jedi was printed as a related miniseries and did not tie in directly with these monthly issues. All 107 monthlies and 3 annuals were collected by Dark Horse in 2002-2003, under the name "Classic Star Wars: A Long Time Ago...". There are 7 volumes. The first one is out of print and difficult to find (I lucked out getting one on eBay for about 10$ above retail incl. shipping, but I've seen them for a good $60-70.) The rest are all in print and easy to get. The Return of the Jedi miniseries was collected in several TPBs. Basically, anything that's "Return of the Jedi" and has old-school pastel-y artwork is a collection of those four issues. While most of these old stories are barely-referenced and sometimes silly, some of the new material does refer to them (Zeltrons, Nagai, and The Wheel from Legacy; Lumiya from Legacy of the Force, etc.)

There was also a Star Wars comic printed in the daily newstrip in the late 70s and early 80s. They covered several mini-arcs and were collected by Dark Horse in the early nineties in 29 issues (Classic Star Wars 1-20 and Classic Star Wars: The Early Adventures 1-9). These issues were then collected in four TPBs (In Deadly Pursuit, The Rebel Storm, Escape To Hoth, and The Early Adventures). 1 and 3 are out of print, but 2 and 4 you can still get easily enough. Under the line of Classic Star Wars, there were other issues printed as well, including the two-part Devilworlds, which featured many short stories (including a now-non-canon origin story of the Millennium Falcon).

And we can't forget the old Droids and Ewoks comics. All of the Droids comics that Dark Horse put out have been collected in Omnibus: Droids, but the Droids and Ewoks books that Marvel put out have yet to be collected.

Does SFBC mean SciFi Book Club? As in those things you see in magazines where they say you get books for about 50 cents or something? I didn't know people actually signed up for that. I was always afraid it was a trick or a con operation or something...

Why thank you sir!

Though I should advise that DLOS is an acronym. On the Wook I'm Taral, Dark Lord of the Sith, but I couldn't fit all that in the namespace here happy So Taral-DLOS worked fine.

But yes, thank you for the dark greetings!

Yeah that's what it stands for. And it's not a con- you do get the sign up bonus. The only downside, besides the difference in dimensions to their exlcusive hardcovers, is you gotta remember to decline your monthly featured selections each month that they otherwise automatically send you, and if you forget you then gotta bite the shipping fee of returning the product.

Tales of the Jedi is the earliest set of stories in existence, telling about the Jedi/Sith conflict. If you're interested in that sort of thing, it's another good starting place, but I'll warn you that some of the comics aren't particularly good.

Fixed. Some of these aren't great (the Golden Age/Fall of duo, Freedon Nadd) but the others contain some bright spots, and TOTJ: Redemption is one of the best SW stories period.

I liked it better the first way. Even the best TOTJ comics are mediocre (lousy art, terrible terrible writing), and Redemption is badly overrated (it's a good story, but not earth-shatteringly amazing, not one of the best stories. The sheer amazingness of the premise powers through the middling art and KJA's awful writing).

Redemption had great artwork, IMO- some of my favorite EU imagery is in that story. It's art was miles ahead of the other TOTJ arcs.

Eugh. I'm not a fan of the art at all. It doesn't do anything for me -- it's not even Gossett's best, and the inking and coloring do it no favors.

Redemption is all concept, no execution.

Totally agree. REcently got the Omnibusses and reread those stories after about 10+ years... Most was nice to interesting, but not that great (a lot less great than I remembered it), except for Redemption, which is among the best comic stories I ever read, including 30 years of X-Men and Frank Miller's Daredevil. The art is beautiful and interesting and the story telling gave me a whole new appreciation of KJA, whom I so far considered capable only of nice, entertaining, but not overly deep stuff. Pity he never used those skills on anything else.

Good, good!

Read Republic with Legacy and it'll work even better. I won't say why, though. tongue

Edit: Assuming that you haven't already read Republic.

I think I might have an idea...Syn looks a lot like Quinlan Vos... thinking And no, I haven't read Republic. But I'll try to read it.

I just started working at an Atomic Comics so I get to check out comics every night. The Legacy that I bought is the 30th Anniversary 12th volume. I also bought Union, the Michael A. Stackpole one, in 30th anniversary edition, because it was pretty and it was Stackpole. tongue

I think I remember something about a falling out between Stackpole and LucasBooks...is that true?
