Of course you want to read the NJO. It's the best Star Wars novel series ever written! So, I'm dusting off this ol' chestnut for you, TheMacUnleashed! I can't count how many times I've posted this NJO essentials list. I wouldn't do it if it wasn't, well, essential! mischief

Manisphere posted:

Vector Prime R.A. Salvatore-It's the first book so missing the setup for the whole series would be a mistake. Read it. *Essential*

Dark Tide I: Onslaught Michael Stackpole-
Dark Tide II: Ruin Michael Stackpole- This series is truly excellent and important in setting up and understanding things to come. Many love this duology. A few don't think it's Stackpole at his best. It's not essential per se but it is one of the most rewarding books in the NJO.

Agents of Chaos I: Hero's Trial James Luceno
Agents of Chaos II: Jedi Eclipse James Luceno-Fine books that center on Han and overcoming his grief. Not a 'Must read" for this series. I read them years later though. Very fun books!

Balance Point Kathy Tyers-I skipped this one as well first time around. Although it was a hardcover it was skippable as the next series which is amazing recaps Balance Point quite well. (You can skip this one if you plan on reading Edge of Victory I&II)

Edge of Victory I: Conquest Greg Keyes
Edge of Victory II: Rebirth Greg Keyes-Get both of these and read 'em. They are both amazing and Anakincentric. *Essential*.

Star by Star Troy Denning-This monster of a book is dead center in the series and it is NOT to be missed under any circumstances.*Essential*

Dark Journey Elaine Cunningham-Skip it. Its events are recapped in the next series which is a great one. This is a Jaina novel but little happens. It's a tad more adolescent in theme than some of the other books.

Enemy Lines I: Rebel Dream Aaron Allston
Enemy Lines II: Rebel Stand Aaron Allston-This series brings back much needed laughs. It has the most old fashioned Star Wars feel
to them of all books in this series. Don't skip them. They may not be technically essential but they are among the best in the NJO.

Traitor Matthew Stover- Don't miss this one. It's one of the most important books in the EU altogether and it's genius. *Essential*

Destiny's Way Walter Jon Williams-Not a gigantic fan of the book but it's necessary in beginning to wrap up this arc. *Essential*

Force Heretic I: Remnant Sean Williams & Shane Dix
Force Heretic II: Refugee Sean Williams & Shane Dix
Force Heretic III: Reunion Sean Williams & Shane Dix -I skipped all of the Force Heretic novels and missed nothing. They just
weren't really my thing. (skippable)

The Final Prophecy Greg Keyes- Second Last book. You Can't miss it!*Essential*
The Unifying Force- James Luceno. This is where it all comes together and ends. Last book so you can't miss this one either. *Essential*
peace

You misunderstood the-user-with-really-awesome-username's request, Manisphere- she's asking what's skippable between TCS and NJO for reading the NJO, not what's skippable inside the NJO itself.

TMU- if you've read everything post-ROTJ up until TCS, I'd say the only book left before the NJO that is definitely skippable is The New Rebellion.

The Corellian Trilogy and Hand of Thrawn Duology are essential, the latter for wrapping up things pre-NJO, and the former because many elements in TCT not only appear in a book or two of the NJO, but play significant roles or connections in the NJO follow-up series' legacy of the Force and Fate of the Jedi.

Black Fleet Crisis you could skip over if you'd like, it only ties into one NJO book in any significance. However, BFC is a pretty good read (at least 2 outta 3 of the plotlines), so you may want to consider still reading it.

doh! That's what I get for not quoting within my reply.

Heck. I'd dig right into the Hand of Thrawn Duology. But that's me. I wasn't much for the non Zahn big 3 books in the Bantam era.

The only books I'd say are really essential are the Hand of Thrawn books (Specter of the Past, Vision of the Future). The Corellian Trilogy is important as background info for at least one book in the NJO, and several in LotF, but I wouldn't say it's a must-read (nothing really happened until the last book). I actually didn't read the CT until after the NJO and LotF and still knew what was going on in those two series'. The Black Fleet Crisis is a nice, mostly self-contained trilogy so it doesn't play any kind of major role in the later books. And ditto on The New Rebellion, totally skippable.

I can agree somewhat with TCT- up till about 4 years ago I'd say it wasn't a must-read, in that most of the relevant info can be garnered in NJO exposition, but then a lot can be. Now, with TCT elements playing more significant roles beyond a single scene or two in the NJO, I'd say it's worth a look at the very least, even if it's not as important as HOT.

Thanks for the help! grin I'll definitely check out the Hand of Thrawn books, and I'll probably look at the Corellian Trilogy too.

Is there a thread for Luceno's Millenium Falcon buried somewhere? I can't find it, having gone back several pages...?

I haven't read any of the CT books, but have been getting along in the NJO just fine, although I am only up to Jedi Eclipse so far. With the last two books atleast (Agents of Chaos I and II) it has seemed that the HST was more of a prerequisite than anything else.

Alright, I'm looking at reading through a few more books in the EU, and I was hoping to get some recommendations on where I should go next. I've stuck mainly to the series that occurred during/after the OT, and I'd like to continue along there for now, at least. I started with the JAT (actually, I read that series and TTT before I even saw the OT) and progressed to read all of these novels:

Classic Era
-Tales From the Mos Eisley cantina
-Tales of the Bounty Hunters
-Shadows of the Empire
-Tales From Jabba's Palace
-Tales From the New Republic

Sequel Era
-X-Wing Series
-The Courtship of Princess Leia
-Tatooine Ghost
-The Thrawn Trilogy
-The Jedi Academy Trilogy
-I, Jedi
-Darksaber
-The New Rebellion
-The New Jedi Order
-Legacy of the Force

I plan to read the Hand of Thrawn Duology next, but after that I'm not sure where to go. Should I pick up the Corellian Trilogy or Dark Nest? Or are some other one-offs/series better? I'd rather purchase a novel in paperback than in hardcover, and I'm not really big on comics. Thanks for the help!

There's a Tales From the Empire anthology- if you liked the New Republic one, it's the same format of reprinted WEG material featuring a main multi-part story.

I loved Dark Nest- but some people can't get past the bugs thing. I felt it had intense, gritty action sequences and some great moments. It's lessened somewhat by it's ending being slightly open-ended to serve as a setup to LOTF. It does sideline a lot of the newer Jedi, like Jaina, though. However, It's one of my favorite portrayals of Jacen.

Black Fleet Crisis and CT might be worth consideration too.

Fools Bargain/Survivor's Quest follows the Hand of Thrawn and Outbound Flight gives some of the background to the whole Thrawn series, if you are interested.

Tales From the Empire sounds good--I really liked the Tales series of books. And I would like to get to Dark Nest eventually. I know the gist of what goes on in the CT thanks to the Centerpoint-oriented scenes in NJO and LOTF, but I would like to read those novels eventually. I've never really heard anything about Black Fleet.

Fool's Bargain/Survivor's Quest sound good--I really enjoyed Zahn's writing in TTT and I hope he delivers in Hand of Thrawn and those, as well.

Thanks for the input!

Just note that Fools Bargain is a short story included in the (I think) SQ paperback. SQ is a nice little stand alone that is also part of a unqiue reverse-chronological duology with Outbound Flight. You can read SQ and OBF in any order, but the order you do so will give you a different POV of things.

SQ was published first, and if you read it first, it becomes something of a mystery novel, leaving OBF to later fill the reader in on what actually happened. If you read it the other way around, then OBF tells you a story and SQ ends up being about finding out how much of it other characters discover, with a little thematic aftermath/epilogue of sorts.

Either way, i enjoyed both. SQ feels like a third book or epilogue/off-shoot of the HOT duology, while OBF stands on it's own as a nice prologue to the Thrawn material. Definitely read Hand of Thrawn first though.

Black Fleet Crisis is a mxied bag- it has three plotlines. The main military plotline with Leia and the Yevetha is quite good, and is pretty popular around here. The secondary plotline with Lando isn't for everyone but is an enjoyable Rendezvous With Rama-esque story that harkens a little back to the old Lando Avdentures books. The third plotline, with Luke and the Fallanassi is kinda dull, especially given that the PT now reveals the wild goose chase nature of that plotline almost immediately.
