So why do I have a niggling idea in the back of my head that Even Peill was already dead? Is there a now non-canonical source detailing this? I can't remember. Was he on the council as of ROTS? I didn't think so, but could be mistaken.
"Only senior member of the council to escape the massacre at the temple"? This seems to seperate itself from the Council of First Knowledge that he later mentions. Any idea's or did I simply pick up fan related theories somewhere along the way?

It was "clone troopers and several other species." He commanded a division, which is a little weird for a brevet major. Not as odd as a Senate Guard commanding a Star Destroyer, but it does qualify as a nitpick.
Overall though, a great book. I was on the edge of my seat for a lot of it.

I just picked it up yesterday. Love the pulp inspired cover, especially with Vader's shadow on the alley wall.

I can answer for Even Piell without reading the book, and I had the understanding that he disappeared, but Anakin DID take his seat on the Council.

I found this book way better than I thought it would be. I especfically loved the way Piel was killed by the troopers. The fight with the energy whip and the lightsaber was pretty good.

Overall gripe of this timeframe:
* No slow gradual move from Palpatine to Emperor Palpatine
* No Slow gradual move from Republic to Empire. He declares it. Boom, everything changes.

2 suggestions that may help your difficulties:
- Vader is indeed different to Anakin and this is how that difference is most clearly expressed.
- The Emperor already had the blocks of Empire in place, all that was missing was the name. This was the other puropse of the Clone Wars: To induct the galaxy into an Imperial mindset.
Not to go off in a tangent, and I will leave it at this so as not to clutter up this review thread:
But... shouldn't there be some form of gradual change to go from Point A (Anakin) to Point B (Vader)?
My post from the review thread.
Someone replied that its Lucas's fault that he took Anakin to Vader in a few minutes.
But thats not what I'm arguing. Even Lord Vader in ROTS (pre-suit Vader) is still wreckless and extremely fast-moving little-thinking, action-packed (look at his duel against Obi-Wan on Mustafar), and then just 2 months after that we have brooding, deep, calculating Vader in Dark Lord and then 6 months after that in Coruscant Nights.
Thats my argument.

Ah, it's not that difficult to see. When he becomes the suited and booted Vader, he's just found out that he's responsible for his wife's death (and he would presume his unborn child), and it's just sunk in that he's slaughtered innocents in the name of a man who's as evil as they come. The Order he belonged to for the past decade is destroyed. In addition, his former mentor and best friend left him for dead and missing half his limbs on a slope of molten rock, and now he has to live as half-machine for the rest of his existence. He realises that his past impulsiveness and recklessness are at least partly to blame for his current situation.
That sort of thing can change a man.

Yea, why even bother to pretend this is literature at all and just write whatever the kriffin we feel like right? I mean, seriously, we can take Tahiri Day 283 and then Tahiri Day 285 and they are too entirely different characters with no expose of Day 284; we modest well do the same thing with Anakin/Vader right? Yea, sure! Why have no character expose, lets just have action-action-action-action, modest well just turn the novels into dialogue and script.
