I thought "Mopak" was meant to be a "Star Wars" word.

I have always thought that one of the virtues of reading a lot, and from multiple genres, is the way in which it expands one's vocabulary.

I think praise is in order for those who attempted to look up words they did no know--not knocking them because they didn't know as many words as you or didn't have as good of a dictionary as you.

I have no doubt that educated folk, or even people with a keen interest in vocabulary will know some or all these words, good for you, I do not.

I'm an avid reader of stories the like of Star Wars and Dragonlance. I've read a lot of Stephen King, C.S. Friedman and other mass market writers. Yet in my years of reading I've never seen a book so littered with difficult vocabulary. This is not the usual vocabulary used in Star Wars novels, thus my complaint. I'm sure some others feel the same way, though its true not everyone is quick to admit when they don't understand something.

That's one of the biggest problems I had with this. I don't mind big words, and actually have a pretty good vocabulary. There were just a lot of unnecessarily complex words, I thought. It seemed like Reaves enjoyed pulling out the big words, too. I don't recall noticing anything like this in any of his stuff with Steve Perry. Was Shadow Hunter wordy at parts, too? It's been a while since I've read it.

That said, I've no big complaints, besides the shooting blaster bolts thing. I bought it last night and finished it a few hours ago, and enjoyed it quite a bit. There were a few minor things, but nothing's perfect.

One thing that had me confused, though, was the Elomin character. I was under the impression that Elomin were closer to humans in appearance, and the Elom were described more like Vader's aide, the former being the more elitist and the latter being enslaved by the Empire. Or is my whole memory of these two species just muddled?

I know this is off topic but I agree with you. I read because i LOVE the stories. But i have noticed when i write papers for classes i start to write like the author of the book i am reading. So bigger vocab should be welcomed, America would be better off if we set higher standers for our kids.

As far as the book goes i am only on chapter 17 and its quite good. There are a lot of stories in the story, which makes it very interesting. I liked hearing about the Grey Paladins and the Teepo paladins. Very interesting. So far its a good read.

I have to confess I liked the shooting-the-blaster-bolts thing when I first saw it. Now... not so much.

I just don't want to see Laranth doing nothing but the shooting-the-blaster-bolts thing for two more books.
Give her the lightwhip at least. You know, Whiplash, lightwhip... it fits. grin

Vader vs. Jax (with saber) and Laranth (with lightwhip) would be full on win.

Yeah.

And to be honest, I was actually happy. It pulled me into the book, and it was a lot better than the stormtroopers who couldn't hit the broad side of a barn from the movies.

Remember, Obi-Wan said in Ep. IV that stormtroopers were very precise. I'm glad to actually see that sometimes.

When I read that they were doing a story about Typho investigating Padme's death, my first thought was that they stole my idea! wink I had an idea for a plot bunny dealing with Typho investigating Padme's death (but not that he loved her...more on that later) two years ago but I never wrote the story. I'm glad the EU is doing a story on this subject, it's potentially fascinating.

But I truly don't understand why they had to have Typho be in love with Padme. Ignoring the fact that there's not a trace of this anywhere in the films, it's just not needed for this story. Think about it...Tyhop was tasked with protecting Padme Amidala, a beloved figure on Naboo that his uncle once protected. The fact that he failed to protect her had to be devastating for him. He probably resigned in disgrace for the Naboo military. He was a soldier who failed in his mission.

I have no doubt that he looked up to her and respected her. He probably considered her a friend too. But this should be a redemption story, about a disgraced former officier who is trying to find out what happened to the woman he was tasked with protecting. Not "Typho had the hots for Padme and now he's going to make Anakin" pay. Redemption makes for a far more engaging story. That should be enough to write a story about with adding contrived unrequited love element.

The ONLY thing I can think of is that "memetic" might be under "meme" and "esoterica" under "esoteric", but that still means they should be RIGHT THERE.

I can't imagine a dictionary without esoteric in it.

There's always online ditionaries and Google "define" search as well, if nothing else, but...wow, esoteric isn't exactly an esoteric word.

So people are digging this? Fantastic, been waiting for this book for ages. Not read any SW novels since the NJO ended happy

Typical though, I barely ever read (Outside of Star Wars novels, the only books I've read in recent years have been by Warren Ellis, Hugh Laurie, Dave Gorman and Danny Wallace) and then three come out right next to each other happy

It also backed up Lama Su in AOTC: "Clones can think creatively. You will find they are immensely superior to droids."

I'm about 130 pages in and it's pretty good so far. As far as wether or not is holds up to continuity or not based on the whole R2 and 3PO / Falcon references, I really could care less. It's fun, and if there are sightings of the droids and the Falcon, then thats awesome! Have'nt gotten to that part of the book yet, but soon I hope.
