Was Nick's GAR unit comprised of Clones, or non-human recruits like him?

Somone can correct me on this if I'm wrong, but I believe he stated it was a mixture. I know he had some clones, because he remarks on how they had no fear.
I'm pretty sure that he said that there were non-clones. I don't think he said non-human, though, but that could be the case.

So, can anybody who's already read it say if there really is a real tie in with Evasive Action: Prey? Besides the mere fact that Xixor's in both, I mean? Also, do we have a precise timeline fix for this yet? Several months after ROTS I would presume. After Dark Lord, certainly.

I did not notice any tie-in with Prey, but then again I didn't know I was looking for one. Vader and Xixor is in both and they take place on Coruscant at about the same time...

I didn't buy it yet, but I did flip through a copy at Borders yesterday, and I have to say... pretty impressive. A lot of second-string characters who take up their own path in the Saga, and a lot of emphasis on survival and integrity, which is excellent for the Dark Times era.

Not sure why, but this Rise of the Empire/Dark Times era has always interested me more than the LOTF/Legacy one. And so far, I've not been disappointed.

happy Bravo, Mr. Reaves!

I havent read through the entire thread because I havent finished the book, but I must say Even Piell's deaths was one of the best I've ever read. It was simple, it built up his reputation and how powerful he was and then gave him a bitter end. I loved the last few words before giving Nick his orders. Made him seem like he lived up to his entire career in my opinion. Absolutely great!

I had a niggling feeling from the first time our smuggler friends showed up, and the book's description of the Far Ranger, carefully dancing around the issue of its class aside from one glancing reference suggesting it was a YT . . .

It has me thinking . . . thinking mischief wink shhh

eventually i really enjoyed the book, though i found chapters 8-15? really hard to get through and was a bit stuck for a while.. but once i got past that bit i thoroughly enjoyed it. Jax is a fantastic character.. and it looks like we're goping to have a nice little group of main characters to care about!
the Den-I5 relationship was really interesting..
all in all, very good book.. glad i didnt spoiler myself for this one

Just finished. I loved it--the prose was clear and sweet, and the book as a whole was well-written. My biggest problem with it was the "translation" of real world sayings into SWsified ones, but I didn't mind other terrestrial things like cloudcutters for skyscrapers. I found the notion of epic poetry being written about Jedi heroes of the TOTJ period to be fascinating, and I enjoyed the classicization of the Temple--what with tesselated floors and all that.

I liked the Black Sun scenes, surprisingly, and the glimpses of Coruscant high society through the lens of the lower levels was fascinating. I also enjoyed the Imperial background--the references to the Palace and Imperialization were nice. The Empire just makes anything in Star Wars far more flavorful.

Vader was wonderful. Reaves has him perfectly--he's no clunking brute, but a delicately nuanced mastermind who plays with wheels within wheels. I enjoyed how he was described as "unfailingly polite" and that his voice was "silken yet menacing," "velvety baritone," or "cultured as always." Seeing him use "if you please" was great--Reaves rightly captures the elegant enunciation Vader uses in ESB, which was always his best portrayal

I seem to recall MedStar had the same issue with overuse of SWsified real-world sayings, and they weren't nearly as prevalent here. And I think there's been poetry about TotJ characters since the JAT, though those were all composed in the time period of the novels.

And I wholly agree--Vader was excellent here.

I finished this book thursday and i absolutly loved it. It reminded me of a novelised version of 'Dark Times' which is a huge huge bonus for me cause I absolutly love stories between ep 3 & 4. Evan Piels death was really well done, and handled in such a manner that I really believe a jedi council master being taken down like that. Jax was a fantastic Jedi and a model for ho to survive in the dark times & still be a jedi. The ending was fantastic and made me smile.

Yeah. Stormies using tactics--who'd have thought authors realized that they're élite troops? I loved it.

Oddly, one of the issues I had was with the writing. I had to reread a few sentences here and there because they just didn't seem to make much sense to me, and I noticed a word or two spelled wrong or incomplete. I honestly can't remember specifics, but I thought one was the word "throug" at the end of the line instead of "Through". As you already stated, there were a lot of "Earthly" elements in the book.

I was kind of tired when I read some of it so my head may have been playing ticks on me.

Other than that, I thought it was a pretty good read. It was good to have a story that did not have "The fate of the galaxy hanging in the balance." I agree that Darth Vader was written quite well; keenly intelligent, fearsome, and just overall dangerous. The impressions that Nick Rostu and the Elomin got from Vader really reinforced that. I really did not think that Jax, Laranth, Rostu, Den, I-Five, Kaird, and Rhinnan would all walk away from this book so the proper atmosphere of despair was created. Vader had a pretty big part in that.

Interesting to see a different group of force users. Are they brand new or have they appeared in some material in the past?

I also enjoyed seeing some better "One shot" characters popping up - Nick Rostu, I-Five, Den, Xizor.. and more of the workings of a REAL crime group. Most crime groups may as well be "The Red Shirt Posse". Seeing Black Sun's early affiliation with the Empire was cool, especially knowing the group survives. Even Piell's death was well done and closes the book on another Purge era Jedi.

okay, overall, GREAT book

now, for the nitpicks

1. Incorrect use of the plural for singular: Korunnai, lekku, Yevetha (in singular should be Korun, lek, Yevethan)

2. Everyone and there dog is familiar with the Noghri, the Yevetha, and their cultures; flies in the face of the Thrawn Trilogy and the Black Fleet Crisis trilogy

3. Lancer frigates already around...these were created after Battle of Yavin acc to SOTG and numerous other sources

4. Even Piell was a Senior Member of High Council as of ROTS...hard to reconcile with movie, where all 12 seats are accounted for. Best fix I can think of is that he gave his seat to Anakin

havent finished the book yet but one thing is really bugging me, well not really bugging as makeing me laugh at the wrong times.

The author aparently did not know the definiton of a meter and has so far used it to create a galaxy of comicly short people

two examples that had me laughing so far

Faleen are physicly imposeing averageing over 1.5 meters in height( they had better average over that to be imposeing, 1 meter is about 3.3 feet, 2.54cm per inch 100cm per meter gives (150/2.54)/12= 5 feet)

Underlord Perhi was not overly tall at 1.25 meters( no kidding, using the same method as before the guy is around 4 foot 2)

seriously, he shoud have gotten a science book, or made up another name for the unit of measure.
