"I actually care much more for the characters now that I feel they don't have a cloak of invincibility wrapped around them, than I did during the Bantam era."

I did too, Romibus, up until Jacen's demise, which was so poorly executed that it left me feeling indifferent.

Got to say in response to all the Kyle talk, I'm not a big Kyle Katarn fan and wouldn't have minded him dying, but that scene with Valin Horn coming to his rescue was pretty sweet that I'm glad he didn't perish. Still, I don't want the Jedi order to turn into the old folks club and certain older Jedi should die in war, this includes bigger name Jedi. Like, why weren't Tionne and Kam Solusar killed from their injuries? What was the reasoning because they seemed dead and then all of a sudden both were alive and okay??

JediBen, since it's you're thread i hope ya don't mind, but can you PM me what other cool reads are out there Non SW. Something really deep & fun to read.
--Help, i'm about to start reading Potter if i don't find something soon. I dont wanna go back to 1991 Ravenloft or the forgotten realms etc etc. I'm done with that....SOrry bout the OT..

---JediBen,, It's not all sad with our heroes. Howabout that funny thing the masters did on Endor when they just started fighting eachother & the way it started by Kyp throwing something at Luke was hillarious.. DO you recall the moment? It was one of the funniest things i've read with Luke,Kyp,Kyle,Corran in ages. Them having fun! What book and who wrote that one?

If it's in LOTF, TT - you'll have to tell me!

This all may have been touched on already (sorry, I honestly just skimmed over everything), but the death of Chewie is, largely, what got me BACK into reading Star Wars novels. The fact that our characters, the MAIN, Lucas-created characters that we first met in theaters, now have mortality is very appealing to me. As long as the authors don't resort to "cheap" deaths, then I love it. Going further, even the EU character deaths like Palleaon and Jacen drive that feeling home even more.

And on Jacen, I didn't realize just how attached to the character I was until AFTER he died. I'm going to miss the little sith-spawn/hero of the universe.

I think it's mainly a result of Del Rey using character deaths as the sole emotional payoff in Star Wars. Where is the Leia redeeming Luke in DE, the bonding between Luke and Mara in HoT duology, the birth of the twins in TTT, the

Granted deaths can be moving (Obi-Wan, Vader's sacrifice, Ganner vs. Vong or the X-Wing novels for examples) but there are other elements to Star Wars.

Del Rey has forgotten that fact. They think the only question we care about is if the characters will die? They might not die but Del Rey won't let them live.

I'm an odd one. To me individual deaths do not cause me to stop reading a series, watching a tv show, and so on. With Mara I was much more annoyed at the how and why she died instead of the fact she died. An extreme dip in the quality of writing or blatantly stupid plot points will turn me off faster than a death.

Character deaths aren't bad, but they can be done badly.
