Now that LEGACY OF THE FORCE has ended, what directions should we go in, that seem the most logical or the most exciting?

I think that since the time from BETRAYAL all the way to the LEGACY comic book series are all supposed to be part of the same "Legacy era" in Star Wars history, that then there should be some common threads that tie the whole era together.

Rise of the One Sith
-We will probably have the One Sith manipulating events behind the scenes, not revealing themselves until the Sith-Imperial War.

Remnants of the Confederation
-Maybe the lack of resolution with the Confederation means that we'll have remnants of them continuing the war against the Galactic Alliance for decades to come. We do know that when the Sith-Imperial War starts that GA is also dealing with its own systems: joining the Empire, or seceding, or remaining neutral and refusing to aid the Alliance. That seems like signs that the people of the galaxy still haven't gotten over their issues with the Alliance, even after all those years in between the two wars.

Resurgence of the Underworld
-With the Alliance acting somewhat imperialistic and oppressive by strictly governing its systems, which probably won't get too much better under the strong hand of Daala, that could also cause criminal organizations like the Black Sun and the Hutts to rise again from the underworld of the galaxy. We could see pirates and smugglers become common again. We know they seem to have risen back to some degree by the time of the LEGACY comics, and they would be a good enemy for Ben to use his detective and spy skills against.

Return of the Corporations
-Since so many planetary economies have been ruined in the last few wars, and the galactic economy as a whole has probably collapsed, perhaps we'll see the needed return of commerce guilds and megacorporations similar to the old Trade Federation and Techno Union. The Corporate Sector, which wasn't hit too bad by the war I think, could become a very important center of power in the galaxy. I doubt the systems would trust their collective resources to be directly controlled by the Alliance, so they'll probably look to the corporations to manage them.

Formation of the Fel Empire
-The Imperial Remnant is now under control of the Jedi, through Jagged Fel. We basically know now that he will eventually become Emperor, and that a split will happen between the Empire and the Alliance. Perhaps Jag Fel splits with the Jedi as well, explaining why the Fels think of the Jedi as "cousins" but relations with them are strained. Or perhaps the Jedi are the ones who split from the Alliance, taking Fel and the Empire with them, with their split from the Empire coming later on. The formation of the Imperial Knights, and their probable split from the Jedi order, is also bound to happen sometime.

Changes for the Jedi: New Leadership, and the issues of Assassination & Redemption
-The Jedi themselves are definitely going to go under changes, and we know one of them is going to be when Luke finally retires/dies/disappears. The Jedi of LOTF seem to have no problem with assassinating Darth Caedus, but the Jedi of the Legacy comics are having a big debate on whether they should allow the assassination of Darth Krayt or now. The Imperial Knights, on the other hand, seem to have no problem with Cade's idea of assassination. There also seems to be a similar difference of opinions between Ben Skywalker and Jaina Solo on this, so perhaps Ben is partly responsible for the Jedi going one way on this issue and Jaina is partly responsible for the Imperial Knights taking the other side of the argument.

Changes for the Jedi: Service to Government or the Force
-Another point where the Jedi and IKs seem to differ is on service to the government, going back to the argument the Jedi were having during the Dark Nest crisis. In the beginning of this "Legacy era" the Jedi had no problem being the servants of the Galactic Alliance government. But Luke comes to the conclusion after Jacen's takeover that sometimes the Jedi need step away from serving the government, and return balance to it when it has gone too far from its ideals. Luke Skywalker himself appears to be getting too involved in the politics of the galaxy, and had too much power over the Alliance and now the Imperials. He'll need to let go of this power eventually, and if he doesn't step down as Grand Master we know he will eventually die. By the LEGACY comics, it seems the Jedi were allied with the Alliance during the war but independent from it, Kol Skywalker says he is a servant of the Living Force. It seems the Jedi have gone back to serving the will of the Force above the will of any government. The Imperial Knights, on the other hand, serve the will of the Emperor absolutely.

Revenge of the Mandalorians, Heir to the Hapan Throne, Anger with Moffs and Jedi, Nanokillers, & Daala
-Another more immediate issue, which could help accelerate these other threads, is the conflict and bad feelings the Mandalorians, Verpine, and Hapans must have with the Moffs because of their nanokillers. I'm sure we haven't seen the last of the nanokillers, and I know we haven't seen the last of Boba Fett and the Mandalorians. Tenel Ka's legacy is now in danger too, with Allana presumed dead and no apparent heir to the throne. Jag Fel and the Jedi may have the Moffs under their control right now, but I'm sure Boba Fett will want his revenge. Especially with his alliance with Daala (who has no love for the Moffs), now conveniently in charge of the Alliance, and their pact to rid the galaxy of all users of the Force. Perhaps this will be what causes the Empire to rift with the Alliance. Especially with Boba's "real enemies," the Jedi, now in control of these Moffs after pardoning them for their war crimes, and his pent up feelings about the Jedi and the Empire from their use of the Clone Army... I feel we may finally reach the point of explosion with all of those stories falling nicely together in place. There's also the possibility that Daala and Boba steal the nanokiller technology from the Moffs, only to turn around and use it on them and the Jedi as well as all those with high counts of midichlorians.

Reformation of the Yuuzhan Vong
-Another thread that will probably come up is the reintegration of the Yuuzhan Vong into the galaxy, which we know will eventually climax with Kol Skywalker's Ossus Project. After Luke and the Alliance spared them, and some time has passed, it would be nice to see Luke and later Ben start reintroducing them to the galaxy as a reformed species. We know they fell as a species because they were caught in the crossfire of the Silentium-Abominor War, and collectively fell to the dark side until Yuuzhantar was forced to strip them of the Force. Perhaps Sekot and the Yuuzhan Vong will fall under threat again and be tested in their new ways, perhaps even from the Silentium or Abominor again who are lurking out in the Unknown Regions, but this time they will act differently and prove they have changed as a species for the better.

Threats of the Unknown Regions, the Forgotten Worlds and the Imperial Mission
-The threats from the Unknown Regions in general could also act as a thread throughout the next few decades in stories, and could be how the Empire helps improve its image by protecting those forgotten outer rim of the galaxy from these threats. The galaxy is weakened, and the mysterious terrors from the Unknown Regions could see this as the perfect opportunity to strike and reveal themselves. The Empire could help the Chiss in the fight against these threats, with occasional help from the Jedi, until Fel or someone realizes the Empire needs its own order of Jedi that specifically serve the Emperor: the Imperial Knights. The worlds in the Rim, long ignored by the powers in the Core and left to be ruled by criminals and abused by corporations, and left to defend themselves against threats because of the Alliance's limited resources, may finally receive aid and protection in the form of the Empire and its Imperial Mission.

Overall, common elements from the movies and the EU seem to be:
Role of Jedi (rulers/governors vs. military/police/diplomats vs. Will of the Force)
Republic/democracy vs. Empire/authoritarianism
Centrality vs. Federation vs. Confederation vs. Anarchy
Union vs. Secession
Core vs. Rim
Corporations & Political Corruption & Criminal Organizations
Technology vs. Nature and Primitive Cultures

I think we'll see a return to directly focus on those elements.

We also cannot forgot what the heart of Star Wars is about, which some of the heroes seem to have forgotten in the chaotic confusion of recent events.

Star Wars is about . . .

Good vs. evil, the battle raging both within the galaxy and within each individual
How evil tries to confuse the good with the evil
Conquering our fear, being ready to accept change and let go of the things we are attached to

How sometimes the way to win a war is to not fight at all
The evils of discrimination and slavery
How authority should be questioned, freedom and justice fought for

Why we should be forgiving and merciful, and not kill out of revenge
How important our choices are and that we always have one
The importance of love

Those are all really good points and ideas DG. Just one thing I'd like to add to that list if I may. Wouldn't it be kinda cool if were introduced to some new force using cultures and species in the coming years. The idea that Dalaa or Boba or the two of them together starting a war against all those with high midiclorian counts sounds like a perfect opportunity for their to be some kind of alliance between the Jedi and the other force users of the galaxy, the light siders I mean. Maybe some group out in the UR could come to help out and be the exact opposite for the Jedi than what the Vong were.

i wonder how much tie in we will get with the Legacy era

it seemed like when the Legacy comics started, it was so far beyond the current time period. but now it seems like it is right around the corner, and there is natural set up to occur with the current charactors

should be interesting to see

Perhaps, anything is possible! I'm thinking if Denning gets any novels in the new contract that we might get more info on the Celestrials and the other ancient galactic powers that existed before the Republic. They could fit into your idea of a benevolent alien race coming into contact with our heroes. Being formally introduced to other Force cultures, such as the Aiing-Tii Monks would be interesting too, maybe they'll all come out of hiding after hearing of what Jacen had done.

The LOTF book series is technically the start of the "Legacy era" which includes the LEGACY comic book series, and they have said the era started with BETRAYAL and last for at least 100 years, perhaps even thousands of years. So many of the elements introduced in the LOTF series could stay around for a while as markers of this era. Obvious things such as the One Sith, the Fel Empire, the role of the Jedi, the role of the Yuuzhan Vong. Maybe not so obvious elements will survive LOTF as well, such as remnants of the Confederation and the Mandalorians. I'm sure the nanokillers will play a future role as well, and there's probably a reason why they seem to have disappeared by Cade's time.

Question is, where do the novels end and the comics begin? Do the novels handle the Sith-Imperial war and go up until Legacy? Is there a natural ending point for the books/beginning of the comics or will they just sort of bleed together eventually. I hope not, because I like my books and comics separate... though I am finally starting to force myself to accept the Legacy comics as part of the canon.

Sounds cool. I always like when the Jedi have their backs against the wall.

I just want to see them steadily march towards Legacy with Ostrander and Abel at the helm of ideas.

For now, I want small scale novels dealing with the main characters and how they react to the sweeping changes LotF brought. A Jaina novel would be great. A Luke/Ben adventure novel would be great. More stuff like MF (assuming it's good).

We already have threads for the Millenium Falcon novel Here and speculation on anything that might be included under on DelRey's new contract once it's renewed Here.

Can we please make those threads sticky ones so that people won't continue to clutter up the Lit board by making new threads on these same topics?

Yeah, I think it would be neat to see the Jedi have to play nice with one of the other groups.

In the back of their minds, they would have to be thinking "Could THESE be the people that helped push Jacen over the edge?"

Since you mentioned the Unknown Regions I hope to see a Tim Zahn hardcover adventure novel with Luke and Ben Skywalker having an adventure in the Unknown Regions or Ben and the big three in the Unknown Regions in a Tim Zahn hardcover. Perhaps the threats in the UR could help the Empire regain control of the galaxy as seen in the Leagcy comics. I hope to see many post-LOTF books set after James Luceno's Millennium Falcon. How about a novel where Luke,Han and Leia confront an older Assanj Ventress from The Clone Wars assuming she survives that long?

This is more on what threads we think should be running through the whole "Legacy era," what elements to keep from LOTF and what to throw out, what could emerge as threads to help tie future books in with the comics, stuff like that. It's not on the Millennium Falcon book or the new cotnract at all.

Where do we go from here?

Let Millennium Falcon be the last post-41 ABY novel. Use novels instead to fill in the five year gap between the NJO/Dark Nest and the Four year gap between Dark Nest/LotF.

Give 41 ABY onward to Dark Horse. The End.

And where do you think these threads are going to appear? In the books that's where, and all future books would be included in DelRey's new contract.

Hmmmmmm thinking , you know, I've been thinking a lot about the nanokillers lately and although I really, really, really don't want to think about it, they may be the safest bet for the next enemy to kill Luke Skywalker and many well known Jedi. Not that I think they'd actually go for it or anything, but it is a possibility.
