The only real problem with collecting the trades instead of the issues is that some stories don't get traded--Republic's "Star Crash" and "Infinity's End" come to mind, though both are widely reviled so they're not necessarily that big a deal.

I get the TPBs, myself, but I think it's just a matter of personal preference. Whether you want the full collection all together later on, or the single issues sooner.

I like both. I enjoy the monthlies immensely. Nearly everything now gets bundled up in trade format at this point. It's not like Legacy and KoTOR or even Dark Times and Rebellion are ever going to not include every single issue in a trade. Infinities End or Starcrash are exceptions to the rule and are all 7 years old.
One thing about the monthlies, everything is at least 6 months to a year ahead of the next trade. If you don't mind waiting and being spoiled a bit on the boards, I'd wait. If you enjoy monthlies, well, your decision is already made.

I would go with TPB's especially if you like going back and reading them cuz it just makes it so much easier. But if you like the pictures get the issues

Truly...it's a patience thing.
If you can wait long enough for the TPB...do it!
not only is it a more practical and convenient format...it comes out cheaper in the long run.
Legacy is the first comic I am collecting the issues of with regularity...ever.
and actually, I intend to stop with this current arc before Vector moves in.
It's a different experience to the TPB...of which I have several from older comics. What it really comes down to is patience...if you need to get that story right away or can wait to have it.
that's all it is...TPBs are superior in all other ways.

I'll be honest here:: I never understood why TPB's are discussed so much.. I am 100% confused to why one would want their comic stories in a TPB form. So there's no chance of the comic ever having any value(starwars), and like mentioned above, not every comic makes it to TPB.. Like that Legacy issue where the Stormies take out that jerk Quarren Sith Lord. etc..
--Get the comics bro.. Of money is a concern then start buying the comics now for 3 bucks & you're set for next time. eh?

That Legacy issue with the Quarren Sith and the stormies was and issue called Noob and it is collected in Legacy: Shards.

Small factual correction -- the story mentioned was gathered in the second LEGACY tpb. And from what I read elsewhere on the Board, SWL 16 is getting hard to find and is pricey on e-bay.
The tpbs usually don't have all the covers and they don't include the letters page, which can be fun. Other than that, it comes down to personal preference. Do you want to wait and read it all at once or get a "fix" every month? To be honest, Jan and I DO try to make the monthly hard to resist.<g>

I buy both the monthlies and the trades for KOTOR and Legacy. I like the instant gratification of the monthly comics and the convenience of the trades collecting all of the issues that comprise an arc in one place. It's alot easier to put a tpb in my bag to read during lunch than 5-6 issues.

Y'all succeed in that goal. There is no way I could wait for a trade's release now.

The only major downside about the TPBs I can think of is that they don't reprint all the beautiful issue covers. Sometimes one cover is used as the cover for the TPB, and it also depends on how many arcs are in the TPB, but usually most of the issue covers are missing.
And yeah, mainly its a patience thing. Its quite possible to know almost everything that happens in an issue without reading it, with the Internet and all these days, but that's still not quite the same as reading it yourself, not to mention having to wait months for the collections. Though I'm starting to run out of space to sotre everything too, which is a problem. Although I'm also collecting both the issues and then buying the TPBs for easier reading later, so maybe that's why I'm running out of room.
And yeah, I used to wait for TPBs (never bought an issue of Republic), but then Legacy got me hooked, then from there I was hooked onto KotOR, and that led to... well, yeah, a space problem, but that's probably just me.

Until very recently I've been getting both, but with money getting tighter I think I may have to trade-wait. Damn, that hurts.

I've been getting the TPBs for Legacy and KOTOR and plan on continuing to do so, but for the last few months I have been picking up the monthlies.
It's just that urge everybody gets: the urge to be bang up-to-date on the stuff we enjoy, as if trying to prove how much we enjoy it. Reading the spoilers on the board just isn't as good as picking up the issue when it comes out.

Well thanks for the response. My 1st.. cherry = popped!
---I think i fall into the category of "need it now!" Fpr me there's no substituting my box w/ all my SW titles. A lost my comics (4 boxes!) back in 93 to a drunk, party throwing roomate who decided to pass out with over 10 people he didn't know. So when i got home all that was left was my main box of stuff that i read often. Luckily though, 90% of the box was Star Wars.. Yeah note to all---If you have a roomate situation, leave your boxes of older stuff at moms house and play it safe.. 4 boxes! Wolverine from 10 - 90-ish SOLID! And soo many old FF & misc marvel.. Knightfall SOLID! Man i miss those awesome Azriel books. BAH!
--Thanks for the creativity of your book man... My issue w/ Legacy was never w/ the story or factions etc..
