Fanfiction. Do you *USE* between books?

I haven't. I have tried to read stuff from time to time. It never takes. I first heard of fan fiction in 2003 when I bought my first Harry Potter book and found the web full to the brim with fan fiction of all genres, movies, books and games. I suddenly found a confusing lexicon of terms like shipping, anonymouse, anonymice, wangst, baka and yiffy. Silly terms aside if I read something good I want to tell said writer to immediately invent their own characters and keep writing. If it's bad stuff I think, well, God bless them.
Are there formidable writers of SW fan fiction on site? Not having Hyperspace and SW Insider never producing any short fiction makes me wonder what the fans accomplish. When I think of fan fiction I almost think Drew Karpyshyn to be the first paid fan fiction writer.(not that I minded this books at all) But there is some hard core dislike for the guy's work. Have you ever read some fan fiction and thought the writer should really be working for Del Rey?

The entire EU is fan fiction, from a certain point of view.
Not that it would be a good idea to have a Star Wars author who isn't a fan of Star Wars.
I was luck to have a fanfiction obsessed older brother to provide a good example of why someone should stay away from fanfiction.

I love fanfic, but mostly... No. I think the strengths of fanfic (and fanfic writers) is that they don't have to adhere to the canon as established by LFL. They can explore other avenues because they don't need to attract (and keep) a vast and varied audience like the official stuff does. (Recommended reading: Keith R.A. DeCandido on the difference between fanfic and profic.)
And there is a lot of crap... By volume, far more than the official folks can even dream of producing. Face it: the entire fanfic community is basically one giant slush pile. Finding the good stuff can be almost more trouble than it's really worth, which is why I've never even bothered to do it with any other fandom.
Fanfic has its place. It's great, and yeah, there's plenty of it I like better than the official stuff, but I'm pretty hesitant to claim it's better, because it often isn't. Just... different. And that's okay.

Fanfiction is also more...hmm...female-interest-oriented than the published novels, in general. As a whole the novels don't really cater to that audience, so they end up catering for themselves. (For instance, I'm not sure the EU has actually attempted a love story since Crystal Star (no, really, that's what it was supposed to be) and Courtship of Princess Leia, and I don't think it's ever pulled one off successfully)
There is, of course, a lot of nonsense out there. But there's also some stuff that's just fantastic, no two ways about it.

There are a great many romantic elements in the Republic Commando series, but I agree that romance is very overlooked as a whole in the novels.
Over the years I've kinda come to the conclusion that one person's literary masterpeice is another person's toilet paper , so to speak. Reading, like writing, is a very personal thing that different people do for different reasons. Some people love somebody like Stephen King, some hate him.....
I don't think there is any universal acceptance of who the greatest authors are or are not, though I'm sure someone with a literary Masters Degree is thinking of jumping in to list off a plethora of great writers all humanity should love, or else
Our own Fanfic boards here are wonderful, friendly and very vast. Women do outnumber the men to be sure, and its honestly a nice change of pace from Lit. Setting out to write a Fanfic can be a daunting task and give you a real appreciation of what challenges the real authors go through, especially if you are trying to maintain canon. The amount of research one can do is enormous.
It's very easy for some people to sit in their glass houses and say, "wow this is terrible", without thinking about the feelings of the author or what the writer was trying to convey. Every Fanfic writer is not going to please you anymore than every Lucasbooks writer is, people are going to write for themselves, about what they enjoy. Complaining about the quality in Fanfic is kinda like going watch a friend play a recreational sport. Are they going to be good as a professional pro-athlete? No, but what you need to ask yourself is if their having fun doing something they enjoy.
Fanfic might not be for everyone, but if you poke around enough you'll certainly find something you like. There are even awards threads which list what the Fanfic authors as a whole feel are the best works. Maybe seek one of those out before you get started for best results. Look toward the best canon category if you want tales that will fit in with the novels.
Manisphere, I'll PM you some links for stories I think are exceptional, have a look at them and decide for yourself.

Eh. There comes a point where relationships are so dysfunctional they can't really be called romantic. And there's a lot of that in the modern EU. I'd put most of Traviss's and all of Denning's in that category.
(Anakin/Padme too, I guess

There are some incredible authors on the boards. Seriously, awesome. I'm a rank amateur compared to a lot of them.

Like there novels themselves, the skill varies in fan fic from poor to novel quality. You can also try searching here at the Archive.
http://fanfic.theforce.net/ Try a search by most hits to start with and see if there is anything you like.
I'd love to see a really good fan fic reviewed in this forum the way the novels are since the readership here is so different from the usual fan fic crowd.

"Use"? Can't say I've heard it put that way before, LOL.
Are there formidable writers of SW fan fiction on site? Absolutely! And quite a few of them post in this forum.
Like any fan creations (fan art, fan films, fan audio, etc.) fan fiction varies in quality. I'll echo what Mariah said and suggest the Archive as a good place to browse, as well as our boards here.

I love fanfic.
Adn in comparison to ff.n I think we're the palce with the high quality stuff. The prombelm remains to fins what you are looking for. Indexes as listed here, can be a great help, especially if you look for certain characters. Or you can use lazy's wonderful link machine, which will search and board for keywords.
I have to admit that the quality varies, but there are some authors I'd put into print wihtout second thought. I'd suggest finding one you like and explore from there (who's reading that, what are those writing, what is the author reading...) Might be a less exhausting journey than browse the FanFic boards.

I'm with Four_Dot. I don't touch the stuff. "Just Say No"
I respect that there are good writers out there writing fanfic--and maybe even good Star Wars writers. I mean, heck the "What's the Story" entries all started out as fanfic, of a kind, but were adopted into canon (which is the key reason for reading Star Wars EU, in my opinion), so I can't get too all "high and mighty" about fanfic--but none for me thanks. I'll stick to the official stuff.
