Agreed. Never judge a novel by its DP, they're never very accurate.

In the third book of CN, the DP stopped referring to Vader as a human male, and I still don't see why.

Those were awesome, although I've pretty much gotten all the star systems and prominent worlds committed to memory by now anyway, it did show a little extra effort on DelRey's part...

Maybe the maps would give too much away?

At least we can look forward to the Atlas.

The cynic in me half wonders if that's why they stopped including them: more reason to go out and buy the Atlas when it finally comes out. When they were inside every cover the need for a separate sourcebook was less vital.

FOTJ Dps definitely leave chunks of characters out. For Outcast I'd have included Lando, Tendra, Tahiri, Cilghal, Tekli, Seff Hellin and perhaps Winter, but definitely some Baran Do sages. Omen was slightly better with it, though I would have thought Jysella Horn might have had some billing and perhaps some more Sith.

It's still Star Wars. Usually, wars have casualties.

Modern dramatis personæ are pretty useless anyway. Back when Stackie first introduced them, they actually served a purpose, as they provided a quick reference for squadron call signs that'd be difficult to keep track of otherwise. They also provided information on character homeworlds and occasionally species that'd be clumsy to relate via the narrative; in Allston's X-wing entries, they also provided the full names of characters referred to only by nicknames.

Modern DP, though-- they're basically useful only as promo material ("oooh lookit who's in this book!"), except that the policy lately has been to not leak the DP, so now they're pretty much wholly pointless.

Also: the NJO books provided the galaxy map in order to assist readers in tracking the invasion and state of the war; given how poorly planned LotF's galactic "war" was, though, the inclusion of maps would be kinda pointless.

Has it been confirmed that's Mara Jade Skywalker on the back of Abyss? Not a more current, mid-thirties Jaina?

That's interesting. I actually thought it was Jaina on the front. Apparently everyone's aging backward.

That is another reason for including a map in FOTJ. We could track Luke's and Ben's journey, given it doesn't end with Abyss. Or maybe just a detail map of the Maw.

If it were an appendix, it would also up the page count.

Thing is, no one died in Outcast or Omen, so... And there isn't actually a physical war going on right now.

Heh. You know, there's potentially an amusing subliminal message in FOTJ that goes: "See! Jacen was a really, really bad Sith! He caused all those deaths and he was just one man! But look at these other Sith! Hundreds of them! And they've killed NOBODY!" tongue

Any got an ideas when the spoilers will start rolling in?

Also anyone else think this is going to be the book that starts what ever galatic conflict this time around?

I'm hoping for no galactic conflict this time.

Also, some speculation. We haven't been shown the back cover for Backlash, presumably because it would give something away. For Inferno, this was the case because they didn't want us to know Luke would survive Sacrifice. But we haven't gotten a huge lead-in to a character death, and Backlash doesn't have the same connotations as Sacrifice does.

So maybe they're not trying to prevent us from knowing someone survives; they're trying to hide something from us -- the mysterious thing in the Maw, for example. I've been picturing it in my mind as some sort of vague monstrosity, but I realize that it could easily be someone we already know. Ben appears on the front cover of Backlash; is it unreasonable that this mysterious enemy might appear on the back?
