As far back as Republic #50....

In fact it was pretty much the entire point of the ARC troopers, and Alpha in particular.

At the time, treating them as individualistic as she did was considered going against the grain

As Jeff's list of examples shows, it really wasn't; large chunks of Republic and over half the existing Clone Wars novels had covered that angle.

I'm not arguing Jeff's examples, but there really is a difference between "recieved wisdom" and reality, because at the time, and for a LONG time after, it really was hard to get people on-board with the idea of the clones as being individualistic. People either thought of them as meat droids or pod-people who lived only for war. It was something that came up in tons of threads over on TOS.

I'm not saying Traviss was the only one to deal with the issue, but she was vocal even on forums about the need to see clones as human beings and not meat droids, and human beings who could fall in love, want to have sex, want to have families, etc. There were plenty of arguments on the old LucasArts forums about this, and for a time I kept seeing the idea that the clones had all sexual desires stripped of them at Kamino during creation.

How anyone takes a person's tone is one thing, but I think there's an obvious difference between "recieved wisdom" and truth, it's why you use the phrase "recieved wisdom". Heck, I was under the recieved wisdom that Palpatine knew about the Vong and created the Empire, Fleet, and even the DS to fight them, which was why I asked in another thread if someone could seperate out what was fanon and what was actually stated in canon.

Traviss was well aware of the comics, as she often refered to them including how she enjoyed how the comics showed different Jedi reacting differently to the clones, with Anakin seeing them as more his men, Obi-Wan seeing them as fellow soldiers, and being bothered by the way Quinlin would call them "Clone" instead of using their names or numbers, so it's hardly as if she's not aware that other authors were exploring similar things.

The "recieved wisdom" thing sounds a heckuva lot closer to all the fanon that was thrown around about them, and in some cases still is, as whether O66 was programmed in any way or whether it was just a contingency order is still a topic of debate.

Again, not to argue Jeff's impression of her tone, attitude, whatever, but I do think the phrase isn't inclusive to her fellow writers, many of whom she talked about when they were doing work with the clones like Luceno's excellent work with Ion Squad and Appo in DARK LORD and the comics, which she read as they came out and often talked about.

I would say that the RC novels probably gave us our deepest look at the clones, but then again, that was their remit, so it's hardly surprising.

I don't know if anyone has a copy of the novelization yet, but I saw them selling at Best Buy yesterday for $15 (I did not see them available at Barnes and Noble yet).

I don't by hardcover, but I flipped through it. It looks really interesting.

On another topic, all this Traviss bashing seems really off. She is a fine writer, and she clearly works very hard, including research, to put out high quality novels.

And she has done a LOT with fleshing out the clones and their connections to the Mandos.

I really like her stuff.

But I can only speak for me. However, I am sure many other feel the same but tire of battling/wasting time on discussion boards with the vocal minority who don't like her work.

As for continuity, SW EU is just too large and convoluted to remain consistent. A good story is a good story, and I will gladly sacrifice continuity for a good story any day.

Does anyone know if they're selling it at SDCC? Because it'd be weird if they were having signings with nothing for Traviss to sign. They did the same thing with SACRIFICE, it was supposed to be out the following Tuesday, but circumstances dictated getting it out earlier.

Karen said she had her author copies as early as two weeks ago, which I've seen Forbidden Planet in London get copies of the books before Karen has her author copies (which reminds me I need to watch the post for my copy).

I'd say, on my end, bookstores seem to be keeping to the 26th release date.

Though it's kind of weird that TFU's only out in Germany and a couple of people have it, while lots of people seem to have seen Clone Wars even in the States, but nobody seems to have bought it.

Anyone who's seen it, I'm interested in how much (if at all) it promotes the rest of the EU in inserts. For instance - ads for new books? Book timeline?

Unless someone else pops up with info soon, I'll see if I can find the book again the next time I go to Wal-Mart. Saw it there earlier today and just flipped through it briefly.

I need spoilers, man! cry

Well, just as it relates to the rest of EU, not the story itself. I'll see that soon enough on the big screen.
