this book isn't out yet, we know very little about it...what makes us so sure it will mess up continuity so bad? It can't do worse than Vader's Quest

Pfft. Armand Isard gave the complete plans to Garm Bel Iblis in "Encounter at Darknell". There's a very obvious reason (or two) why Voren (or his source, probably Arhul) was anxious to deny this.

1. Given Garm's less-than-total commitment to the Rebellion at this point, this was before Rhett started organizing stuff. Vader, ironically, merely gave an impetus to a Rebel Alliance that already existed. tongue

2. This is the really important one: because the Rebellion already had the plans, everything else is misdirection. Contrary to what everyone (possibly including George Lucas) believes, they're not just the McGuffin in the movie: they're the lure.

The Rebellion has had the plans for years. They've known about the exhaust-port weakness for years.

So, here's the plan:

a. The Death Star gets trapped in a complicated gravity well, where it can't manoeuvre. It has to follow a slow, predictable path round Yavin to target the Rebel Base.

b. Ground assaults on Yavin Base are repulsed with heavy casualties (Star Wars: Battlefront).

c. Successive waves of Rebel X-wings make a mess of the Death Star's fighter and flak defences (The Farlander Papers).

d. Once the Imperials decide to stop squandering TIEs against the snubfighter attacks, the final wave of fighters shifts its tactics, and launches the trench run. Too late, the Imperials analyse their real attack pattern, and realise that there's a weakness.

As Ackbar said, when Palpatine spun the exact same plan in reverse, when the Rebel launched their great, symbolic concentration of military firepower in a supposedly unexpected attack on his hidden Imperial base, deep in the gravity well of a remote jungle moon...

... "IT'S A TRAP!!!!"

Here's an idea.

Leia was elected Senator in when she was 18, making it 1 BBY (or 2 BBY, depending on where her birthday falls in relation to the election or swearing in of the new Senate). This places her election as immediately or shortly after the events of TFU.

Unless Alderaan gets two senators, this means that Bail must have left the Senate during this time. Perhaps the events of TFU caused Bail to resign or refuse to seek re-election.

We know Alderaan had Coruscant-level planetary shields, and we can reasonably estimate that a majority of the House of Organa was opposed to the Empire. It would thus be possible for Bail to turtle up in his palace on Alderaan without fear of arrest. The Empire, should they hope to apprehend him on Alderaan, would probably have to invade, a step that they were unwilling or unable to take until the Death Star was completed or the Senate disbanded.

We actually don't; the only evidence for them is circumstantial.

It's a logical assumption, though.

Anyway, I started a new thread for McE's theory, because it's ingenious.

Yeah, I saw 'em today at Waldenbooks. Alas, didn't have the funds.

Are you kidding? Yavin post-ANH + Luke/Han/Leia = fail. It's on page 47 of your textbook.

Bail left the senate pre-TFU and leia became senator at 16, these are canon facts, sorry, also stated in the TFU novel

These books are for little kids. Does that mean a Jar Jar colouring-in book is canon too? I don't see these as part of the overall continuity.

"Little" kids or just pre-teens? Jude Watson's Scholastic series were for the latter, and they were usually far more mature than half the stuff in the "adult" novels.
