I was browsing the Wookieepedia and noticed that Jedi Master Cighal is mentioned as having once been a New Republic senator. What is the source for this? I vaguely recall her first appearance in Dark Apprentice refering to her as a ambassador.

Is there a source that specifically refers to Cilghal being the Mon Calamarian representative to the Senate or is it merely speculation?

Young Jedi Knights (specifically the "Diversity Alliance" arc), and also in the Power of the Jedi SB which mentions she made a lot of enemies in the "increasingly pro-alien Senate" for her actions against the Diversity Alliance and chose to return to the Jedi Order instead.

So Cilghal left the Jedi at some point? I thought she became Jedi healer extraordinare after helping Mon Mothma and never looked back (hence her seniority in the New Jedi Order 'council'

Interesting. I have never really read any of the YJK books, so I was not aware of that. Does hse play a significant role in the Senate in those books? I also am curious if she was still a member of Luke's order AND a senator.

I'd say she probably was. Luke considered Leia a Jedi Knight while she was Cheif of State, heck... he seems to have considered her a Jedi Knight right around the time that Dark Empire kicks off and she was a Senator then too.

If Leia can be a Jedi and CoS, there's no reason Cilghal couldn't be a Jedi and Senator.

Cilghal started as a bureaucrat, I believe, on Mon Calamari when Leia arrived. She went to the Praxeum to receive training. After she graduated, she said she was returning to Mon Calamari to help her people. I believe in the years between Darksaber and the YJK, she moved up the political ladder and was elected to serve the NR Senate. Nothing much about her time in between has ever been mentioned, either as a politician or as a Jedi Knight and healer.

Oh good, there is a Senator Cilghal. For a moment there I thought I was just hallucinating, since I was pretty sure I've seen one around here for some time now... wink

Well, it is a kid's book and written by KJA - she's really there to serve as an ally to the Jedi who's also an alien, to counter the alien Senators who are insulted by the investigation of the Diversity Alliance. Power of the Jedi SB states that the incident created too many enemies and she left the Senate shortly afterwards, presumably before the NJO started. I don't believe that she was technically a member of the Order at the time, though.

Yeah, that sounds like KJA. tongue

However, I do like the idea that between 12 ABY and 19 ABY that most of Luke's original Jedi students all filtered out and took on average jobs. I will always remember Mon Mothma's conversation with Luke when he asks for permission to start the Jedi Academy on Yavin Four. She basically tells Luke that people need to see Jedi. Doctors, soliders, politicians, etc.

Until the start of the Yuuzhan Vong War and Luke's eventual centralization of the Jedi Order, is appears that most Jedi were freelancers. We have Cilghal serving as Mon Calamari's representative to the NR Senate, Kyle Katarn out doing "Kyle stuff", Corran Horn flying X-wing's with the Rogues, etc.

Boy, I wish Cilghal was the current CoS. Out of all the KJA characters, why did they choose Daala?

Retrospectively, I think Mon Mothma suggested that because she remembered how the old Order had a bad rep. from the PR point of view. That made things easier for Palpatine to turn the galaxy against the Jedi. She definitely wants to help Luke's order avoid falling into the same position. Unfortunately, that didn't happen, and it looks like Luke's order in for a second dose of it - the first occurring during the Vong War. From my standpoint, though, the only thing wrong with Mon Mothma's suggestion was that there were too few Jedi at the time. If there were twice or three times as many Jedi around when she and Luke had that problem, then some of the Jedi could go out into the regular job market, and there would be enough around for the regular Jedi business and to help train future Jedi.

However, the politician angle should be the only area Jedi shouldn't get involved in. Too much of a chance for a new Palpatine to emerge. Not every Jedi can embrace politics like Leia, Cilghal, and Empatojayos Brand did by taking the "no Force power except in self-defense" route.

If only Cilghal was CoS praying . But GA has a law that if you're not a psychopathic killer or a war criminal, you can't be CoS. Idiots frustrated .

I could be completely off on this. I actually agree that Jedi generally shouldn't be political leaders like CoS (though I think Senator is perfectly fine) because there would be too much power in one place (imagine the Jedi serving as both the executive and judicial branches already, which is partially true), but haven't Jedi CoS's/chancellors worked out in the past? I seem to remember there being Jedi Chancellors up until the Ruusan Reformation, and it being peaceful.

I am flattered by your wishes to see me hold high office, but I am rather busy with Grad School at the moment.;)

In the YJK series, Cilghal sponsored the speech in which the Solo twins tried to warn the Senate about the Diversity Alliance. Unfortunately, the speech was not widely received, resulting in a superfluous investigation that resulted in the death of certain Senators.

I do not recall my having ever strictly left the order, rather I simply divided my time.

It has always seemed to me that my Senatorial background would make me, like Leia Organa Solo, a good candidate for teaching diplomacy at the Jedi Academy. This is as much a part of a Jedi's job as healing or various Force skills.

I think you're mixing up the timing here--in JAT, Luke starts off as he's walking into the Senate to give the speech about restarting the Order; the conversation you're referring to, however, took place near the beginning of Ambush at Corellia.
