Yes indeed. I'm a fan of these often-hated comics. I know a lot of things are sometimes compressed into single panels, because our imaginations are left to fill in the in-betweens. They also have the pacing of the films, if you ask me. What I mean by that is, taking books like Courtship Of Princess Leia, The Thrawn Trilogy, Jedi Academy Trilogy, or even Darksaber wouldn't work as a movie as well as these comics would.

Plus, I really like the look of all the new weapons the Empire used, from the Eclipse I and II, down to the Imperial Howlrunners and Shadow Droids.

Of course this is all my opinion, but you are entitled to tear it apart anyway, because I'm nice like that.

I always see people talking about how hated those comics are...but then in the threads that tend to come about we have loads of people talking about how much they liked them.

It has been some time since I read them, but when I did I thought they were fair enough. DEII and CE was a touch shakey though, especially DEII, but they were still rather good, imho.

You have as many enemies as you have friends!

For this is a long-running schism on the board and it's never going to close, such is fandom.

That said, be aware one of the Mods may redirect to your interest to an existing DE thread but that's their call to make.

By the soletaken of Seven Cities, can we please have one Official Dark Empire Discussion thread. This is literally a monthly resurgance now.

It was okay. It just had a few potential jump-the-shark moments. (My favorite: The PLANET of Jedi.)

Dark Empire I and II are the best EU material ever written IMHO. Empires End is a disgrace though, it was to short and small scale. How Dark Horse can keep earning so much on the Dark Empire property, but not give it the grand conclusion it deserves is just baffling. It deserved better.

Dark Empire I and II are among my favorite stories, and my first real experience of SW altogether, years before I saw any movies. The art shows everything in such a big scale, it fits well in with the movies.

I'm a fan of Dark Empire for the most part. Never really dug EE, but overall, it's good.

I love Dark Empire.

I wouldn't mind Dark Empire II if it didn't end on a cliffhanger.

I despise Empire's End for being a rushed ending to said cliffhanger.

It's EE that really does the "Dark Empire Trilogy" in for me. I've long wanted a novelisation of Dark Empire itself, but everything after that has forever left a sour taste because of what EE is (and, by extension, the way it means DE2's ending remains an unsatisfactory cliffhanger). Had they just made EE the same length as the first two, I think the trilogy would have been much better.

It's not that I dislike the second Eclipse, the Galaxy Gun, the Dark Side Elite, Sedriss, surviving Jedi, Han shooting Palps in the back... all of that is fine and much of it has been neglected by the later EU, which I've often felt has been unfairly held against DE2 itself (i.e. it isn't DE2's fault that nothing in it is ever mentioned anywhere else). It's just the way it seemed such a frantic rush and so nowhere near as epic as the original Dark Empire itself. We had this awesome clone story and this great final death of Palpatine at the hands of Luke and Leia (have we ever seen them join together as Jedi like that again since?).

Bringing him back yet again was a bold move and a big gamble and it could have paid off and made it into an even better series than it already was... but then it just got cut short and ended way too abruptly. Sadly, I think in a way it probably fell victim to its own success. Dark Empire was a fairly simple plot really. Luke gets captured, corrupted, redeemed, kills Emperor. Then they brought in all the additional aforementioned plotlines, leaving so much stuff either unresolved or simply rushed in the end. I think it also suffered from the way Dark Empire 2 felt "tacked on" as something of an afterthought, we didn't see the Dark Side Elite in Dark Empire, for example, where instead we simply got the hulking Sentinels. It'd have been good to have seen more build up for Sedriss, but presumably they didn't originally conceive of doing anything beyond the initial Dark Empire plot.

On the whole, I'd have liked to have seen much more of Korriban, more insight into the Byss politics with the Dark Side Elite (like we got between Luke and the Emperor), more page time to build Palp's fear of dying up more, etc. I think it's great the way guys like Abel have tried to retcon DE2 and EE to be more entertaining, the whole Lumiya and Carnor Jax element have provided a satisfying mix of political intrigue, the likes of which I'd have liked to have seen more of in the comic itself (which we could just simply have had from the Dark Side Elite members instead). All this said though, I do still like Dark Empire, I just feel it's a shame a great story got dragged down because of its sequel. That's probably the biggest disappointment I have with DE2, as I feel without it we may have seen Dark Empire itself remembered more fondly.

I enjoyed the DE Trilogy. It was a different way of looking at the Star Wars Universe. I also think it's pretty funny how the EU has forgotten or neglected the DE Trilogy, meanwhile the current generation of novels seem to be leading towards the LEGACY comics. Do they just like the LEGACY comics more?

Stover included a nod to it in LS&TSOM, IIRC.

I don't like DE at all, but I won't be your enemy. wink

Zorrixor : Luke gets captured, corrupted, redeemed, kills Emperor.

I don't agree that Luke was ever corrupted in DE. In the notes that came along with the original DE, it said that the more Luke learned about the dark side, the more he was repulsed by it.

As I said in another thread, I do think Luke was foolish to go to Byss to try to destroy the Emperor from within, but he wasn't evil. Luke didn't commit evil, terrible acts. He didn't kill innocents or destroy worlds. Instead, Luke did his best to sabotage the Emperor's plans; to destroy Imperial property; to send the Alliance Imperial codes; and to save Alliance lives. He was more of an undercover agent than anything else.

After Luke was defeated by the Emperor's last clone, he seemed to be in a funk. He seemed to lose hope that he would ever be able to beat the Emperor or get away from him. Leia restored that hope by telling him he would train her children. That's all it took, and presto-chango, Luke was fine. Then together he and Leia defeated the Emperor with the wall of Light.

And Leeland Chee seems to agree with me that Luke didn't fall. In that huge Luke Skywalker comic Omnibus that came out this year, Leeland Chee says in his comments about DE that Luke "nearly fell" to the darkside in Dark Empire. So that Luke never completely went dark seems to be canon.
