Star Wars
Fate of the Jedi
Omen

Christie Golden
June 23, 2009
Hardcover

The Jedi Order is in crisis. The late Jacen Solo's shocking transformation into murderous Sith Lord Darth Caedus has cast a damning pall over those who wield the Force for good. Two Jedi Knights have succumbed to an inexplicable and dangerous psychosis. Criminal charges have driven Luke Skywalker into self-imposed exile. And power-hungry Chief of State Natasi Daala is exploiting anti-Jedi sentiment to undermine the Order's influence within the Galactic Alliance.

Forbidden to intervene in Jedi affairs, Luke is on a desperate mission to uncover the truth behind Jacen's fall to the dark side -- and to learn what's turning peaceful Jedi into raving lunatics. But finding answers will mean venturing into the mind-bending space of the Kathol Rift, and bargaining with an alien species as likely to destroy outsiders as deal with them. Still, there is no other choice and no time to lose, as the catastrophic events on Coruscant continue to escalate. Stricken by the same violent dementia that infected her brother, Valin, Jedi Knight Jysella Horn faces an equally grim fate after her capture by Daala's police. And when Han and Leia Solo narrowly foil another deranged Jedi bent on deadly destruction, even acting Grand Master Kenth Hamner appears willing to bow to Daala's iron will -- at the expense of the Jedi Order.

But an even greater threat is looming. Millennia in the past, a Sith starship crashed on an unknown, low-tech planet, leaving the survivors stranded. Over the generations, their numbers have grown anew, the ways of the dark side have been nurtured, and the time is fast approaching when this lost tribe of Sith will once more take to the stars to reclaim their legendary destiny as rulers of the galaxy. Only one thing stands in their way to dominance, a name whispered to them through the Force: Skywalker.

Thanks for starting the thread, RF!

Here we go again...

I'll go ahead and give a summary of what I said in the general thread. Got a copy of the book. You can thank: Kyle Katarn. Bria Tharen. Bothans. Lots and lots of dead Bothans. I can't even step across my bedroom without tripping over one. And Tay Vanis.

The Halcyon telekinetic handicap doesn't apply to the females. There's a new female Falleen Jedi Knight and a Brubb Jedi Knight.

Right now I'll just stick with vague impressions of the book. Since I'm a bit of a speed reader, I'm currently on chapter eight. My vaguely opinion of it, so far? I like it.

I think Christie Golden will be a fine addition to the Expanded Universe.

A Falleen Jedi? Ever since the little teaser in Tatooine Ghost I was looking for one... Cool.

Also, can you tell which chapter the Omen preview in Outcast was? First`?

Any more info on the progress of the Unification Summit? How goes the efforts to reunify the GA? Do we get any new GA officials introduced, like a new Supreme Commander?

Also- dead Bothans? Elaborate please!

If you mean the one concerning the younger female Horn, it's indeed chapter one. The one from JJM's short story Precipice is in chapter five.

I'm not sure if I still have to keep on highlighting things but I'll keep on trucking until otherwise. Here's a thing that almost made me squeal like a preteen meeting their favorite pop star:

I'm not to the part where Luke and Ben meets the Aing-Tii monks but there was a sequence where it made quite a few references to the Darkstryder Campaign. References that I never figured would be seen. The whole situation with the Codex. The effects of the Kathol Rift upon Force-sensitives. The hallucinations with the spiders.

As a old school WEG fan, I loved it.

I think you and I are getting our signals mixed concerning the Bothans. That was a joke concerning how I got a hold of the novel. Unless you do want dead Bothans. Far be it for me to get between a man and his vendetta with those hairy kriffers!

laugh

But I'll answer your first question as best as possible!

I don't recall anything concerning the Unification Summit, so far. There's really been a focus on the Jedi mystery as of the moment. I know Daala has a little lackey that I don't recall seeing prior.

Well from the teasers you've posted so far I'm rather surprised. The use of relatively underrated species by a brand new author is very impressive (particularly a Brubb, which I had to look up on the Wookiee just to know what it was!).

The teasers about the Aing-Tii stuff sound intriguing too. By the sounds of it, if the story keeps up the way you've described so far Golden might have done a bit of a Stover in making her first story pretty original, as opposed to purely derivative like most first timers.

And WEG references? Good times. happy

Now whether to resist temptation of major spoilers as you get further or not... worried

I'll definitely give Golden props on using a larger range of species than I've recently seen in a novel. The Brubb was definitely a pleasant surprise.

As for major spoilers, I'm going to do it best not to post any. Harmless little interesting tidbits? Sure. But major spoilers I'll leave to the domain of others. I will, however, give a (mostly) spoil-free short review of the story.

To get an inkling of where I stand on the current EU, I'll give my own personal taste test:

Love: Matthew Stover, James Luceno, Brian Daley, Michael Reaves, Steve Perry, John Ostrander, John Jackson Miller, Rob Williams, Mick Harrison, Darko Macan
Like: Tim Zahn (up until Hand of Thrawn), Mike Stackpole, Aaron Allston
Mixed Bag: Troy Denning, Tim Zahn (after Hand of Thrawn)
Don't Really Care For: Karen Traviss, Kevin J. Anderson (except Redemption), Drew Karpyshyn (basically his Darth Bane stuff, anything else I'm game for)

(If I didn't mention anyone, it wasn't because I hated them. It was due to me being too lazy.)

Now you know where I stand. As for Golden? Based on her first novel, I'd put her under like. She's around an Allston-class novelist. This wasn't a fast-paced book. It slowly moved the plot forward while introducing an new element into the mix: the Lost Tribe of the Sith. Compared to Legacy of the Force, there wasn't any feeling of disconnect between Outcast and Omen like there was with Betrayal and Bloodlines.

The plot thread concerning the unification situation isn't touched upon but that's expected. The book is only around 230 pages long and there's three story beats to deal with (Luke and Ben, everyone else on Coruscant, and the Sith). I expect Denning or Allston to further that in one of their books.

In fact I was surprised by the little organic mentions of various things in the book from Omen. Same goes with the way it ended. Quite an interesting cliffhanger and quite logical now thinking about the recent actions of the character. Vague, I know. But I won't go into further details.

No and No.

Basically junior Horn went all loco and she got Carbon Popsicled. Daddy Horn, as you can imagine, was not happy about this.

Did little Allana get anything to do? I loved the "little family" dynamic in Millennium Falcon and Outcast.

And is Jysella the only Jedi to go off the deep end or is it getting epidemic?

I believe she is currently the third confirmed case.

DARKSTRYDER?? shock Well, Ms. Golden certainly gets props from me for doing that.

Is there a Jaina/Jag/Tahiri plot line in this novel, or something similar to it? That was my favorite part of Outcast. Does Tahiri have a decent role/or at least exist?

1) Allana's in this one. Got a decent-sized role considering everything else is going on in here.

2) Jysella isn't the only Jedi to go wacko. There's one more. Now I'm wondering what sort of flavor a Horn-Class Jedi Popsicle tastes like.

There's even more! The concept of the monks gathering 'relics' are brought up. These 'relics', I'm under the assumption, are Darkstryder technology. If I can be bothered to double-check this, I will, but also there was vague references to the Kathol/Precursors too. The codex comes into play as well.

Oh man. You asked a damn good question.

If you're a fan of the Jaina/Jag thing... you will not be disappointed. Absolutely not. You will be ecstatic.

There's also a continuation of the Darkmeld story arc.

As for Tahiri... you guys are going to be disappointed. She shows up but... it's one appearance. An important appearance but still just one. Not going to say anymore.
