What did Obi Wan mean by this? I mean in all we really see him doing is talking to Luke and Yoda in sprit form, we see him training Luke in Allegiance (by giving him instructions and hints on what to do and at what time), and instructing Luke to seek out Yoda in ESB.
These two events show that he is able to see a broader picture of what is occurring in the galaxy, but how does this make him anymore powerful than before when he was alive? Any ideas?

By becoming one with the Force he become immortal and understood the meaning of life. Universal knowledge of everything is a lot better than being caged behind an iron mask afraid of death.

Might be worth taking this question to the
Metaphysics
thread, or having a browse through it -- since this has come up.
(In short, however, there isn't a 'canon' answer to your question)

This is an imaginary story... aren't they all supposed to fit together, though?
An animated cartoon about Obi-Wan and Padawan Anakin would have made more sense.

It's a more subtle kind of power through the influence of events, take Luke destroying the Death Star for instance, he helped with that.

Thanks for the help with where to post this question Ulicus.
Yeah I always knew that there was no straight or clear cut answer to the question, but it has been a sticking point in my mind for a while. And with Yoda showing Obi Wan the technique of communicating with Qui Gon at the end of ROTS i am sure this whole topic will be explored further in some novel or comic to come.

Yeah, we discussed this particular question at length for a couple pages over in the metaphysics thread. You'll find a couple views, and some disputation with conclusions.

Obi-Wan not only dies by Vader's hands in the most mystical freaked out way ever, he does it in front of
Luke Skywalker
. He hurt
Luke Skywalker
! Badly! The moment Vader's blade swept through the empty cloak, Obi-Wan had
already
become more powerful than Vader could possibly imagine. How could he imagine his own son had seen that duel and that it would galvanize his devotion to the Jedi way? That Obi-Wan could connect with Luke beyond death and that consequently Luke would be the downfall of Vader
and
Palpatine?
That's how I always took it. Vader couldn't know Obi-Wan died a martyr. He didn't know anyone who mattered was watching.

I was just about to make a thread about this actually. In the thread about why the dark side corrupts that occurred a few weeks back, there was lively discussion of which side of the Force was more powerful. People seemed reluctant to say that the dark side might be more powerful, largely due to Yoda's line in ESB about it only being easier and more seductive.
However, the discussion seemed to focus, strangely, on physical power. It never seemed to me that the sides were evenly matched (in a physical sense) from the outset - physical power seems to me to be an individual matter. The dark side may allow the user to easily augment that power, which might account for why dark siders often seem to overpower their light side foes.
But as Obi-Wan said, there are alternatives to fighting. I do not believe that either Obi-Wan or Yoda were referring to physical power. Rather, their ability to survive death is the "power" to which they refer. Remember, Obi-Wan says, "
If you strike me down
, I shall become more powerful than you can possibly imagine." His physical death is part of the process. We do not know exactly what happens when one becomes a Force ghost, but clearly it is meant to be something profound.

It's the Star Wars version of theosis, for all you Christians out there. It's fana wa baqa, for the msytically inclined Muslims. It's whatever mystical union with the Absolutely Real from any religious tradition you can think of.
Obi-Wan's not talking about physical power, or even the power of the idea of him dying for a cause with the New Hope(and his sister) watching. It's all about the mystical union that's going on there and essentially becoming a perfect conduit of the Force by self-abnegation. The majority of that process had occurred in the 19 years preceding it... not all at once on that spot. You can bet on that.
