April 20, 2010: The Unknown Regions
RPG Supplement, 224 pages, $39.95 US, Rodney Thompson

Far from the cityscape of Coruscant, beyond the fringe planets of the Outer Rim, lies a vast region of space called the Unknown Regions. The Unknown Regions are mysterious and uncharted. They are home to strange aliens, violent slavers, and the forgotten remnants of of ancient civilizations that have lived in isolation for eons.

This sourcebook gives players and Gamemasters everything they need to run and play in campaigns featuring scouts, exploration and adventure in the uncharted reaches of the Star Wars galaxy. The Unknown Regions allows Gamemasters to take their existing campaigns in bold new directions, or this book can be used to jumpstart a new campaign that focuses on exploring the unknown.

Oh no.

WotC is going to screw this up so badly.

If they're not Unknown anymore...then what will we call them? The Newly-Known Regions?

I'm actually looking forward to this. We have a chance to see Chiss space, the Empire of the Hand, the Vagaari, the Qom Jha, the Qom Qae, the Ssi-Ruuk, and some of the other races that Thrawn had encountered.

I recall Wedge making a similar joke to General Cracken in Starfighers of Adumar.

Indeed, they really wouldn't be Unknown any more, if someone creates a resource book about them, are they?

Well done, Wizards. laugh

Hm, now this could be interesting, just hope that just because this isn't a Campaign Guide that it still turns out decent (since a lot of the non-Campaign Guides haven't been all that great recently). Although given how large the Unknown Regions are, even covering a quarter of the area should be enough for a book and still leave a lot of unknown out there. Would be nice to see some more of the Chiss, or maybe even what they're doing during the Legacy era. Or better yet, pictures of the ships of all those things that come out of there occasionally. Although wonder how many eras this book will cover since the Unknown Regions are in just about every era from KotOR to Legacy.

I want this.....now!

Oh man, the idea that we could get pictures of several species and their ships and vehicles would justify this even if it was the worst of WOTC books.

Ohh... interesting. thinking happy

I'm not too worried about the Known Unknowns. I imagine just writing up the Known Knowns will be enough for the book (e.g. Chiss, Empire of the Hand, Ssi-Ruuvi, Vagaari, maybe throw in a little Silentium, Zonama Sekot and Lehon too).

I'll be rather surprised if they go and qualify the entire Unknown Regions as it'd be a massive project, probably too much for a single CG. I wouldn't be surprised if we maybe get a couple of new cultures revealed (like how most CGs will introduce a new Force Cult or a new gang of pirates, or little things like that), but I can't say I'm worried about them mapping the whole area, as CGs are never all inclusive of everything.

I will be very impressed if they give us some added info on the Sorcerers of Rhand and those other couple of unknown dark side cults that Cronal mentioned... the "Ravagers of Somewhere" or something like that? I can't remember what they were called.

The unknown regions aren't unknown to everyone, there are the people who live there for a start.

Really cool stuff. happy Hopefully we finally learn more about the terrors that Thrawn encountered and that the Empire of the Hand fought tirelessly to protect the galaxy from. The Empire of the Hand are the SW equivalent of The Wheel of Time's Borderlanders, with the Unknown Regions being the blight.

And it's been established for a while that scouts and adventurers go off into the Unknown Regions, so why poo-poo this? It'll be a cool chance to see the UR from their eye. It'll be like Force Heretic II: Refugee, only done right. tongue

I rather like the sounds of this, as I think the supplements are much better than campiagn guides. They're much less era specific with a lot more room for creativity.

I think folks can calm down a little on the idea of the "Unknown Regions" becoming "Known" simply because of this book. No doubt a few worlds will be included, but you can make a good supplement about the "unknown" without detailing stuff too heavily. Mongoose Publishing did it pretty well with "The Rim" for Babylon 5.

I have a feeling this may be more along the lines of "The Scout Book" anyhow. Since they've already given us the Jedi Book ("Jedi Academy Training Manual") and the Smuggler Book ("Scum and Villainy"), and already announced the Soldier book ("Galaxy at War") and the Noble Book ("Galaxy of Intrigue").

I'm all for this.

If only for the Empire of the Hand being done right, and some canon answer as to who the kark dusted the Empire of the Hand being finally resolved too.
