TCW has a lot of mystery! What the hell they're going to do about Ahsoka, and what bit of continuity they'll screw up next!

Invasion isn't really filling in the huge blanks the PT did cause there really aren't any for the NJO characters. I suppose part of what I find boring about TCW is that I do know how things turn out so I'd say that's a better example because I not only know their fate, I know how everything happens in the end. There is no mystery. There certainly were an immense amount of unanswered questions before the PT.

Well for myself the reason I can't get behind the new Clone Wars is I did it once and given one of those stories is the Vos epic, it's hard to match.

For me, I'm enjoying Invasion. Somehow, between the pair of them, Taylor and Wilson have crafted a SW story that really captures the essence of SW. It moves swiftly, it has action, mystery, adventure. It's making limited references to the existing NJO work so those who want to can link it up and there's a couple of good cliffhangers to draw people back for the second arc.

Also, unlike Dark Times, Invasion has been far more frequent and steady, which should help it build up an audience. Much as I love Wheatley's art, it does take time and that might be hurting the comic. Fortunately it won't hurt the TPB - but people need to know that exists in order to buy it.

That's why the Big Three are the secondary characters. They're like Uncle Ben, not Spider-man. As soon as you see him you know what happens to him. Besides, DH has said over and over that they're not looking to fill in any blanks. That's why they went to both ends of the time line, so they had a clean slate.

The reason why I can't get behind the old clone war stuff is becuase of VOS and the stuff that came out before. Undirected free for all without GL involvement. Now, with this new show we are getting some maojor stuff. This last episode is what the doctor ordered, and I know they got better ones coming out in the future.

Lucas did have some involvement with the original Clone Wars material- just not as direct as with TCW.

That's fair enough if it was working out that way on paper. I'm not a Spiderman reader but I can't imagine a 5 issue arc so involving Aunt May. I also have problems putting the NJO characters in the background since this first arc makes them an integral part of the comic and Finn's life. They don't get a few lines and they're off like Uncle Owen was. There is a certain loss of jeopardy that goes with brining the Del Rey characters along for the ride for 4 issues.

It's too bad this isn't a monthly where I can see that the second arc is devoted more to the actual Invasion characters. Cause having Luke, Jacen, Anakin, Mara, Leia and Han certainly must help kick it off and must elevate sales. It just doesn't leave me page turning as much as I'd hoped.

To be fair, I don't think there was much jeopardy that Finn was going to get offed in the first arc. As the main character, he's rather invulnerable too. I don't think the story is diminished by having the main characters here, at least not for the first arc. I rather liked it. The thing, though, is that it can't continue this way. It's got to build up a supporting cast around Finn (one is already developing around Kaye) that's not the main characters, that can support rather than overshadow him, and that is vulnerable to the chaos of the Yuuzhan Vong War. Which is why I was rather disappointed that Le'Ung was immediately knocked off. That's not the kind of thing the comic can keep up.

To go back to the KOTOR analogies, you can have Zayne bouncing around with Malak, and it really only benefits the story. What you can't have is Zayne without Gryph, Jarael, "Rohlan", Elbee, Slyssk, or Camper.

I tried to stay away, really I did.

I can only speak for myself, but i dont think the problem is so much the cameos anymore, as it is the Galfridians. In my opinion they are weak characters that NEED the cameos to survive. In other words, they can't stand on their own. If Invasion had been booked just following the big three and their families from the start as it should have been, then we wouldn't be having these discussions about cameos ruining the story. because the story would become about how the sky/solo clan survived new situations in the NJO era, as opposed to their already having survived taking all the suspence out. But instead we have to crawl back in bed with these Galfridains, and go with them on their blue milk run of an arc in the NJO, instead of being where we really want to be, following further adventures of the sky/solo's.

Sure we'd have continuity disscusions about how they could be in all these places...oh wait, we already do that, nevermind.

I mean, does anyone really care if the Galfridians live or die? Is it their fates that keep you reading? That's sort of like saying you watch the clone wars for ahsoka, and who does that?

I think Invasion failed on all possible levels. Remember when the Vong were formidable foes? Now they might as well be those goofy battle droids. Yun-Yammka must be rolling in his grave.

I don't mind the Galfridians. They're not quite ordinary (being royalty, even if of a minor planet), but so far, they're also not too extraordinary (though Finn's showing some signs of importance, and the sister is almost scary). Yeah, every issue has had cameos, though I think Invasion is approaching the point where we don't need to have a major NJO character (meaning someone named either Skywalker or Solo) in every issue. The sister already has her own independent plotline, as well as the father. Finn's story is always going to be intertwined somewhat with Luke due to his Force ability, although I don't mind the comic coming up with someone other than Luke and the Solo kids as teachers/mentors. Master Le'ung was perfect for that, but unfortunately he was always the literal redshirt.

I'm not so much reading for the Galfridians (although I don't mind reading about them, better them than Cade), but to revisit the era. The NJO still has plenty of room for stories, and the original novels were... well, there were some highlights, but saying they were disjointed is being charitable. The war itself was too contrived for my taste- by that I mean, it was a bit too obvious that the overall plot decreed the heroes couldn't win... so no matter how well they did, things ended badly. Until it was like they literally flipped a switch in Destiny's Way and said "ok, now the heroes' awesomeness can win battles now". Also, the lack of politics is nice- I don't mind politics, but I'm so bored of the same old "corrupt government doesn't help!" plotline. Its like that in almost every single active era of Star Wars, in KotOR/TOR to the prequels (although in that era its appropiate) to whatever disaster of a post-RotJ novel is coming out next.

Honestly, its not the greatest Star Wars story ever, but Invasion is a consistent, competent, well-written, on-time (sorry DT) and IMO, the most important aspect is that its progressing steadily. From the start of Finn's involvement in the war to now, there's progress, the sister and mother were captured and have now escaped, and the father is running a somewhat successful resistance on their home planet. Dark Times is great, but... well, I'll be glad if we get issue five by next June, non-GA issues of Legacy don't really go anywhere fast (yes, there's some progress with Cade... but its very minor), though KotOR is still firing on all cylinders... but its ending soon. Although I'd still gladly take just about any Dark Horse Star Wars comic over any major post-RotJ novel (standalone novels/trilogies are sometimes ok, but its still a sadly rare occasion).

The Solos are around just for this mission. So far though Luke is Finn's Master, but I don't see that continuing. My hope is that Finn gets a new Master and isn't Knighted too soon.

Kaye's story has been the most interesting to me, though I like Finn and his droid well enough. We haven't gotten enough of his father or mother to judge. An I reading for the family's fate? Partially- I'd be very dissapointed if the next arc didn't feature Kaye's story in it. It's a combination of both the era (which includes the "cameos") and these characters that keeps me reading.

If I might direct your attention to the page, about a third of the way in, where the guy asks Finn "What are you?"

Now we're out of the first arc, which I'm happy enough to put down to "KOTOR sells just because it's KOTOR but the Vong needed the extra advertising from the Luke covers", going forward I'd prefer not to be inundated with cameos every issue.

Yeah, but if the cameos don't continue we're never going to get to Pellaeon and thats about the only thing that could make me plunk down $3 for this comic right now. tongue
