Sorry that it's always me who seems to be whining about this, but I couldn't help myself: http://www.amazon.com/Star-Wars-Fate-Jedi-Backlash/dp/0345509080/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1252439245&sr=8-1

256 pages!? 16 pages less than Omen?! It's like Del Rey is taking all of our criticisms regarding the brevity of FOTJ/LOTF and choosing to do the exact opposite!

Isn't that page count due to change, per Sue announcing the longer time to write longer books?

Necessarily I am not concerned by page counts so much. A great tale can be told in as little as a hundred pages. I wouldn't be too pumped over a new hundred pages being added to a book if it is all just pointless filler or if it waters down prose by forcing the authors to stretch things. That being said however, I strongly believe that the price for a new book should be adjusted somewhat to reflect length. I liked Omen more than I thought that I would and look forward to more from Golden. I was very disappointed to drop $27 on it though. I think that needs to be addressed.

I disagree, I really disliked Omen, simply for what I feel was the small page count. 272 pages led to a constant "tell, don't show" approach to the entire storyline. We essentially never learned ANYTHING about the Kathol Rift, the Aing Tii, or any of what Luke and Ben found there. We didn't even get the tiniest glimpse of what Ben saw by flow-walking with Tadar Ro. Another hundred pages or more could've easily fixed that problem.

Maybe Golden isn't up to the job, but you know Denning and Allston are. I feel like an average page count of 350 pages per hardcover, with the turning point novels being Star by Star-esque epics is much more befitting of the grandeur and drama of a Star Wars story.

Who cares? Page count doesn't necessarily equal quality. Go take a look at the Return Of The Jedi novelization from 1983; just over 200 pages and it completely rocks.

I have to say I didn't appreciate that book as a kid. I don't think I even finished it. I was too into all the new aliens in the beginning... drooling

I'm kind of with jet here; I wouldn't really care how long the books were if this wasn't coming at the exact same time as such a big hardcover push.

I try not to count, as it involves numbers. And as we all know, numbers are notoriously pointy.

I never really pay attention to the numbers too much as long as it's a good book. Size matters not, as they say. Seriously, I'd much rather have a really short but really fantastic novel than a long, drawn-out novel that's painful to go through.

I whined about this quite a bit before Abyss, which was absolutely fantastic despite being short. When I finished it, I got the "I wish it was longer because I want to read more!" feeling rather than the latter LoTF "I wish it was longer because adding more pages would make me feel like less of a fool for purchasing this book" feeling. wink

And that feeling is only made worse when it's hardcover. I don't mind short books. I just don't like paying for short hardcovers; nobody does. It's too much in the middle of a recession.

Let's bring e-readers into the discussion...they're increasingly on the rise...ie Kindle II, and Sony's new e-reader coming out in December.

I plan on getting one (haven't decided which yet) sometime early next year. After this current series ends, I don't plan on ever buying another 'hard copy' of a star wars book again. To me, this makes issues involving hardcover/softcover or pagecount/dollar a thing of the past...

Nothing likle getting a good thick book which is a blockbuster, Star by Star for example. Just knowing a book's going to be 600+ pages adds another level of excitement IMO, especially round here.

I don't want every book like that, quality over quanity argument is valid as always, but it had been a while since we had one, Unifying Force would probably have been last.

Page count does not equal better writing. That said, an overly short page count for a hardcover, (as in less than 300 pages) is simply robbery on the part of Del Rey. I've read great books that were 250 pages or so but they were mercifully paperback. Dan Brown's The Lost Symbol is listed at 528 pages and it's listed as the same price as Omen. That's just screwy. Tell me Omen couldn't have been a better novel with some expansion by the author. The addition of more dialogue. etc...

About Backlash, Allston has never handed in a book that was less than 300 pages so I'm expecting the listing of the page count to go up by March.
