Since you don't seem to have read it all, I'll restrain myself now and won't post any spoilers.
I can see a fine irony in Dar's development. Makes me want to snigger.

I didn't mean just Niner, but commandos in general. Paranoia is never a good precondition for sanity.

I also wonder if all 'old' clones are now so watched, or only the squads that worked closely with Jedi.

The entire time Darman and Niner were out, and Niner was talking to the Nulls, I expected a huge mob of stormtroopers and intel agents to roll out and surprise them, but nothing happened. The intelligence briefing at the very beginning of the book made it sound like Imperial Intelligence would be keeping a close eye on Dar and Niner -- especially after Sa Cuis mentioned that Darman was sort of sketchy in one of his own reports. But I guess she had to set everything up for Darman's betrayal in IC 2.

Was anyone else expecting to see the clone vs clone Battle of Kamino from Battlefront II? The quote from Lama Su in O66 kinda seemed to foreshadow that.

Yeah, I was sort of excited for that, but in the back of my mind I figured she wouldn't follow it with any specific detail, unless the Nulls or the clones in Clan Skirata had anything to do with it, which they didn't. It's all focused pretty tightly on Skirata, Kyrimorut and the 501st commando group.

Maybe she'll make mention of it in IC #2, though.

Yes, that's years on from O66 in the time frame.

I know what you mean, S1thari. Iwas waiting for the other shoe to drop all the time when Ordo was trying to extract them. It looked all to easy. I just didn't expect the complication to come from Dar instead of a squad of clones pouncing the deserters..

Not sure about Sa Cuis. IIRC he was a pawn, which doesn't have to mean his reports were not taken seriously. Or maybe Melusar is keeping a closer eye than we think.

Also around page 170. They're making plans to get Dar and Niner. I like the developing relationship between Ny and Kal. Kinda funny how the clones keep pushing them to get together.

And Kad can talk now? Wasn't he just born?

It will also be interesting to see how the new Spaarti clone will fit in/interact with the squad.

You know the book was good, and well Karen has her quirks just like the other authors, but within the last 5 years, she has givien us a lot of material. I think that the problem here is not about the actual story, but of the coverage of a fake war and trying to make sense of it.

See unlike most eras, the clone wars is heading the pack with almost 14 hours already of animation. Two hours of GT, 1 hour and 30 minutes the Clone War movie, and apporximately 10 hours of tv animation which consists of the first 22 epsiodes and this seasons first 6. Thats almost as much as the 6 movie series, and this will be surpassed by the end of season 2. Then we have all those novels, comic books, short stories, video games, juvenile books, and we still got more lined up for next year.

The clone wars has taken on a life of itself. So anything told within that era and the begining of Dark Times is just overwhelming. No other era really has that, some might say the Galactic Civil War, but nope, and the thing is that this era is still growing.

After being disappointed with Order 66 and absolutly disliking No Prisoners I am very pleased to say that I really loved this book.

This is a perfect fit with the Republic Commando series, it's focus is on characterization and following the story of a family trying to survive in the newly enslaved galaxy.

Yeah, that means that action doesn't move the story along, which may make it seem boring to some, but rest assured I suspect if one enjoyed Triple Zero or True Colors or even the Darman plot in Order 66 that they will be right at home with this book.

I'm going to save lots for my review, but am going to touch upon what I thought of individual characters here:

Darman: At first I didn't take to his bitter hatred of the Jedi, but as I thought about it I came to the conclusion that it did fit nicely. A Jedi did kill his wife and thats something that some people would never be able to let go, Darman is clearly one of them.

Niner: He's kinda along for the ride, not a big role here other than being the in person voice of the Skirata Clan for Darman.

Rory Melusar: In being Anti-Force User he is kinda the typical Karen Traviss character, and yet I found myself thinking constantly about how much he would have enjoyed the Empire under Pellaeon. His views actually are not that different from Pellaeon's back in the day as presented throughout the Thrawn Trilogy and its Source Books.

Kal Skirata: His hypocrisy has always shone through, just now we even have characters pointing it out. I don't see how that makes it any more important. Kal is Kal, he wants to save people that he feels need saving, even if they don't want to be saved. He's always been a big talker that doesn't back up his words.

The Nulls(Specifically Ordo, Jaing and Mereel): It's very interesting to me to see how these characters, raised by Skirata, become what he preaches but fails to be. These are scary, driven cult members(and yes Clan Skirata is called a cult a couple times in the book). They are willing to kill innocents and do whatever it takes, morality be damned, to ensure their Clan is safe. Really I found them to be monsters on the page in this book, with few redeeming quailities.

Maze: Maze was simply awesome in this book and was a much needed POV that really showed the Skirata Clan they weren't all they thought they were.

Jusik: Master wishy/washy was in full force in this book. He has a moral level similar to Skirata's I found and was a nice contrast to the Nulls.

Fenn Shysa: A small role, he's organizing his troops and wants to use Jusik. Kal wont have it of course because he's a Skirata, not a Mandalorian, despite all claims to the contrary.

Sa Cuis: Cameo, pretty meaningless except in showing that Darman can pick a Force User out of the crowd.

Iri Camas: I liked how he gave his life to ensure a group of Padawans would escape.

Kina Ha: She didn't really have much of a place in the story and her epigraph about Etain was just silly. She never knew Etain and presumably had all knowledge of Etain(all of which she learned at Kyrimorut) wiped by Jusik before she joined Altis. It just made no sense to me.

Arla Fett: I found myself engrossed in her story, strangly. Maybe I just like crazy folk.

Dr. Uthan: I liked how she was more greatly included in the story by the destruction of her world. Though I admit I find it a little silly that she believes that Palpatine has only one chemical weapon to unleash of the galaxy......

Dred Priest: There was no point to his character really except for maybe a future book or story about Isabet seeking revenge. The Death Watch was set up without him as was the Imperial presence on Mandalore. Though he has been touched upon in previous books as being disliked by Gilamar, he didn't really have the role I thought he would here. Maybe there will be more in IC2

And yeah, he has an action figure, so what?

Mij Gilamar: This felt really like Mij's book at times. He really got developed here and he's really drives home how much the Death Watch is hated by the Mandalorians.

This book was a good addition to the Traviss-verse, touching upon nearly all of her plots and characters. I half expected Pellaeon to show up toward the end tongue

Edit: And I forgot Rede. I'm not buying that Rede is representitive of all Spartii Clones. I half suspect he's a plant by Palpatine of somekind, maybe grown on Wayland? He's the only Spartii Clone we see and is very different from those we encounter only a few weeks earlier in Order 66 . There must be more to him than meets the eye thinking

Their roles are relatively minor here compared to the other books. Fi is described as fully recovered, with only a few instances where he doesn't seem too cheerful. iirc Corr and Jilka begin a relationship.
