That's a valid point.  However, I don't know if any meaningful discussion can be had without there being an objective criteria for evaluating the various Jedi.

This is true. There are some rankings that can be made regardless (eg, Yoda and Mace both being higher-up in terms of power than an average Jedi), but it's very much an discussion of opinion when it comes to more specific rankings.

I vote Obi-wan the most powerful. He always found a way to win. Others may have been better at certain aspects, like fighting or healing or whatever, but Obi was the all around best. I even think he had a large hand in Palpatine's demise, what with starting Lukes training and pushing him down the path to face his Father, thus bringing Anakin back to kill the Palpatine. Obi!!!!Obi!!!!Obi!!!

im sorry im not buying this luke wasn't a great swordsman bit.
Luke whipped Vader ass in ROTJ, he did darkside it up and give in to his feelings. He must be well up there to own Vader like that

I know but look at the pace of the saber fight in ROTJ look at the skill, I think me and my friend could have done a better job. Its ok to watch as the story drives the fight, but compared to Obi vs Vader (ROTS) and even Qui Gon vs Maul, Luke vs Vader Is poor

Luke would soundly defeat any villain in the PT if for no other reason then because he is endowed with the mightiest of all powers..Hero's Immunity. No matter how impressive the display of skill and power said villain were to have displayed in the past, it would mysteriously flee and leave him a bumbling fool causing much confusion to himself and anyone else watching to be sure.

Aren't we forgetting that Luke beat all but one of the emperor's clones? And he beat Darth Vader who Sidious on numerous occasions said was more powerful than him.
Sidious is probably in the top 5 though.

Luke is with the most bad skilled jedis in the history..
and darth sidious isnt strong he only had lightning.. his ass was getting kicked by mace windu and yoda in episode 3..
Luke was owned by vader.. luke was trying his best to put up a strong fight HAHA, when vader just played with him
vader could have killed him at any time.

I believe that the most powerful Jedi/Sith would have to be Darth Plagueis the Wise. For he knew how to use the force to create life and stop death, although he failed to prevent his own death due to trusting his apprentice(Darth Sidious)while he slept. With his ability to create life and stop death would show that as far as power he would be the most powerful, almost God like.
After that I would rank Yoda and Sidious tied for 2nd. I disagree with those that believe Sidious beat Yoda in ROTS. I think it was wise of Yoda to realize they were evenly matched and that leaving and seeking a place to hide so he can help train Obi Wan in being able to be in contact with Jedi's that have moved onto the force (died) so they both can train the child of the supposed "chosen one".
I believe that Sidious stated to Yoda that Anakin would be more powerful than both the Sidious and Yoda combined. I think that would be assuming Anakin didn't end up with half his body being burnt off and having to rely on mobile artificial life support ( his armour )having to keep him alive, thus why attacking Sidious when his son was being pulverized by lightning he couldn't survive. I don't believe Luke turned his father back to Jedi from Sith due to his power but due to his being his son and asking his father for help. As any person with good parental intincts would do, protect their child when it is in pain or danger. George Lucas has stated that Darth Vader was only 80% as powerful as Sidious due to his severe injuries.
There has been suggestions that Yoda also lost to Dooku. I didn't see it this way. I saw that Dooku realized that he was being out done by Yoda thus attacking the two important Jedi's that were helpless ( Obi Wan and Anakin ) causing Yoda to concentrate on protecting them while Dooku bolted.
To draw upon a complete and accurate list would be as many have said here, difficult and subjective. You have to look at other things besides who killed who, who got the most limbs cut off etc. Wisdom is power and so is strength. I saw Sidious/Yoda as very wise and Anakin as very strong. Obi Wan very skilled but wise too. Also I am sure that with my going back to Darth Plagueis the wise, there are so many more Sith's and Jedi's that should be added to the mix. I guess we want to stay within the realm of the 6 movies. Although Darth Plaugeis was not an actual living character in any of the movies he was spoken of and to a very important point. It was his ability to create life and stop death that sold the dark side to Anakin. With all of this said my list would look like this:
1. Darth Plagueis the Wise ( by virtue of his almost God like powers to create life and stop death)
2. Yoda/Sidious
3. Obi Wan/ Count Dooku
4. Anakin (by virtue of his high count of midi-chlorians in his system)
5. Qui-Gon Jinn/Mace Windu/Darth Maul
3-6. Luke (by virtue that he survives the fall of Sidious and the dark side, thus making him perhaps the most powerful Jedi in later years assuming he lives long and well and also by the fact that his father had such a high concentrate of midi-chlorians in his system suggest that Luke AND Leia should have high concentrates as well. I also put 3-6 for Luke because depending on what point of his life his skills would surely be great enough to be at least 3rd place.
All in fun and in my humble opinion.
