Luke Skywalker is a poor choice for "most powerful Jedi ever."
In the first place, the fact that he started training late doesn't really put him at a big disadvantage. Remember that teh Jedi were a religious group as well as Force users. Not everything they taught revolved around getting Force powers. A lot of it was the Jedi Code, and related issues. Further, every time age has come up (TPM and ESB) the talk is about them being too old to train in terms of their current attitudes and outlooks on life, not because "they're too weak to catch up." Luke might've missed the finer points, yes, but there is no reason to belive his ultimate potential was at all weakned by the fact that he started training late.
Secondly, when did Luke display even half the skill of the PT Jedi? He didn't. Not really ever.
Luke's primary accomplishment comes down to getting Vader to successfully turn. However, he did this by appealing to the fact that he was Vader's son. It had nothing to do with his skill as a Jedi, and everything to do with him saying "I love you Dad." He could've done that even if he was still going to Toschi Station to pick up power converters.
What evidence do you have that Luke should be top-ranked?

RE: Confused About the Most Powerful Jedi

Hello all,
I am new to this star wars thing .. and just got into it having a deep interesting in its sci fi aspect and its philosophy.
I am not an expert in these matters, but perhaps this interpretation may be of help.
I am from an enginerring/business background, and am fond of quantitative ways of explaning things - so forgive me if the following explanation sounds nerdy:
potential jedi power = f(midiclorin, efficient use of midiclorin) ---> in general the more midi u have, the great the liklihood of your power
actual jedi power = summation (midiclorin use)
midiclorin use = {wisdom, strength, skill, charity, prediction of future, extra-ordinary power}
EXAMPLE 1: (easy case)
======================
A has 50 midi
B has 40 midi
A and B have same midi efficiency
Therefore A has a higher jedi potential than B
EXAMPLE 2: Efficiency
======================
A has 50 midi
B has 40 midi
B has a greater midi efficiency than A
Therefore B has a higher jedi potential than A
**** IMPORTANT ***
Notice that the _efficient_ use of midi produces the end jedi power.
This is EXTREMELY IMPORTANT because most of jedi literature is based on Chinesse/Zen philosophy and martial arts.
An analogy is the best way to explain:
2 students (A and B) approach a master (M)
A has more raw skill and potential than B ---> i.e. A has greater midi than B
Both A and B start their training to HONE their midi to increase their midi-use abilities {wisdom, skills, etc.}
A is inefficient in his learning (e.g. lazy, arrogant, etc.)
B is efficient in his learning (e.g. dedicated, persistent, consistent, etc.)
as a result despite the fact that A has a higher (jedi) potential than B,
B has a higher actual (jedi) power than A.
******
I hope you guys can take this principle to guide you in the way you rank the cited characters with midi in their bodies.
I do not wnat to do the rankings specifically because of my lack of character/history knowledge.
I await to see your rankings.
Thanks!

My opinion is yoda is the most powerful jedi. He never uses his anger in duels such as obi-wan did to defeat maul.
He uses pure force and sabre skills to defeat his foes without using aspects of the dark side such as anger and hate for his enemies.

("Similarly, yes Obi-wan survived. But did he have to face the same odds as the other Jedi? No, the clones attacked them at point blank range. He was a moving target that was already a long distance away, and was attacked by a relatively inaccurate weapon (artillery). All those things greatly increased the odds of his survival. Or again, did he face Sidious and Anakin, like Mace did? No. Or yet again, just because he managed to finally kill Maul, does that mean that he was more powerful in the Force than Maul? No. Just that Maul started acting stupid/cocky at the end of the duel.")
First of all obi-wan didnt get lucky, second all the jedi that were in the temple had to fight anakin most of them probly came at him at once, obi-wan defeated him on his own if you remember, third he killed maul yes because maul got cocky but obi-wan out smarted him he got cocky obi-wan new that it was the time to strike, same for the clones he out smarted them. I think obi-wan is the strongest or second strongest.

Don't listen to SuperShadow, its all lies. I'll say Yoda was the most powerful Jedi of all time although I think if Anakin had stayed a Jedi and developed his skills as a Jedi for a longer period of time he would rival Yoda.

Cannot confirm true validity, but I like Supershadows list of Midis at http://www.supershadow.com/starwars/midi.html
Makes sense, but having a higher midi count, might not make one more powerful, Vader never used lightning that I know of.

As was proved in the original triology midi-chlorians do not determine who is the best. In ANH Luke was getting his hands blasted up by a practice droid even though Luke should have one of the highest midi-chlorians count ever.
Strength in the force comes from knowledge of the force. A higher midi-chlorian count would simply mean a higher possible potential. However I believe a higher midi-chlorian count can also be a drawback. I use Anakin Skywalker as my example. I believe Anakin relied too heavily on his midi-chlorians, rather then spend the time to learn the intricasies of the force. I do not believe Anakin ever reached his full potential because of this. Kinda like a spoiled star athlete who relies too heavily on his god given talent rather then dedicating himself to learning the system and practising hard.
On the other hand you have Yoda who dedicated his existance to the force and the continuing knowledge of it. No one has the knowledge of the force that Yoda does. That is why at the twi-light of his life an old and crippled little green guy could still hang with anyone. Imagine how a younger healthy Yoda would have been at age 400 or so.
Obi-Wan is kind of a special case. Suposedly he isn't the best at anything, but he always seems to come out on top. He keeps getting his butt kicked by Dooku and he has a hard time handleing Jango Fett yet he takes out Maul, Grievous, and Vader. I think Obi-Wan is a tool of the Force itself. I think Obi-Wan is part of the Chosen One Prophecy and has been used by the Force to guide the Skywalker Family through the prophecy. That being the case, I don't think he is as strong as his victories imply. However it's hard to loose when the Force needs you to stay alive.
So based on the above info my non EU list of the best would be as followed
Yoda
Mace
Darth Sidious
Luke
Darth Vader
Dooku
Maul
Qui-Gon
Obi-Wan
However it must be noted that Dark Helmet would kick all their butts
