The Royal Guard have been known to throw down in comics, - they're complete badasses in Star Wars: Empire. Anyway, my latest though about the live-action show is that Lucas is writing and directing the first season, and then handing it off to someone right? Well I imagine the first season will be similar to the prequels in depth and style, but then we'll get to see star wars through someone else's eyes - someone who could reignite the franchise, take it back to its roots and that's exciting enough to see this thing happen.

The Royal Guards got lost along the way, I think. Lucas once said they'd have a large role in Episode III (to the effect of "we'd see why they wore blood red" or something along those lines), but that never came about. I suspect they got replaced by the Clone Commanders or the 501st, in terms of story function.

I could have imagined them being involved in the sequence where Mace goes to arrest Palpatine, and getting into a fight with the other Jedi accompanying him. However, perhaps to illustrate the power of Sidious he had him kill all of the Jedi (except Mace).

I think the fact that they did little else but stand around in ROTJ, AOTC & ROTS made the Yoda incident all the more hilarious! The one time they actually move - WHAP! Thud, thud.

Given LucasFilm's involvement with Fox, I'd guess that the series would be carried by either Fox or FX. Possibly Sci-Fi.
Not everyone has HBO, and not everyone wants HBO. Putting the series there would limit the audience. This forum refers to the airing of the Star Wars film series on HBO in HD. Where did you read about the TV series being on HBO?
The animated series has to stay on Cartoon Network, though. I have decreed it!

I hope not, I don't have HBO. I could see it airing either on Fox or on Spike considering that last I heard they had the right to air all 6 films.

I could them pushing for a first-run on HBO, so episodes could air uninterrupted and be more film-like; then allowing reruns of new episodes to air in an edited form on a network or normal cable channel.

Not that Lucas is greedy, but he is smart and an innovator - he's a big fan of downloadable purchases so who knows, maybe we'll see episodes go straight to some sort of purchasing outlet like an Itunes or through the official website - thus cutting out the middle man of having to deal with a cable network.

Why Spike??
It's like the host for shows that are so old even I don't remember some of them!
HBO, maybe, but I'd prefer something more accessible in Canada.
It should play on the new CW (old WB) like Smallville

It'll most likely be Fox or FX, if it's not on a premium channel like Cinemax or HBO. Spike and CW are both highly unlikely, as their parent companies (Viacom and Time Warner, respectively) are both heated competitors of NewsCorp/20th Century Fox/Fox Broadcasting. Given the relationship between GL and 20thCF, i'd be surprised otherwise.
Of course, Clone Wars was on Cartoon Network, owned by Time Warner, but that's really because Fox Broadcasting didn't/doesn't have a station that CW would have fit as well on -- as well as the fact that Fox and TW have worked together well via Cartoon Network elsewhere (Family Guy currently the best example). I'd suspect that the animated SW series will again be on Cartoon Netowrk, but he live-action SW series is most likely to be on Fox or FX, as it could fit the branding/image of either.
Of course, GL may go the syndication route, a la Star Trek TNG and Star Trek DS9.
And then, of course, there's always the Sci-Fi Channel, which is up there with Fox/FX as your best bet.

has anyone seen the quote on Wikipedia that an author was denied permission to write a novel about Leia's early years in case they wanted to put her in the TV show?
I'm excited for a Leia remembering Padme style dream sequence...

No Leia, no skywalker story or main characters at all in the show - the droids will make cameos, maybe vader and boba fett but I doubt we'll see anyone else.
