Sounds really cool. How long did the show go on for?
It was actually a 2 hour special, followerd by the series on Star Wars Technology and how it relates to the technology we have today.

Maybe this will be put on DVD. It was good stuff and you can tell some of it was cut for time restraints.

If/When we ever get a Saga box set, I think it'll be included as an extra.

Indeed. Perhaps this and Star Wars Tech.

I unfortunately missed the special. Anyone know if it'll be aired again?

Did anyone else notice that the name cards that appeared for each person being interviewed looked a lot, if not exactly, like the ones from Empire Of Dreams? Pretty cool I thought. makes them fit together nicely.

Didn't catch that. When was it?
It was just my luck today - getting on the plane to go home from C4, wearing the free promotional shirt I'd gotten for the History Channel special, and what should come on while I'm watching TV but this. I was really, really tired, so I think I may have dozed off a bit while watching it. The parts I do remember seeing were really interesting, though. I particularly liked it when someone made the point that Lucas tries to show history as moving in cycles. Made me think of how some fans say EU messes up the message of the films because it implies that the Empire didn't implode overnight. Just goes to show Lucas may not have meant that to be the message after all. It's equally possible Luke and Leia will take over Palpatine's throne and become their own types of dictators, you know.

It was a terrible rehash of every politically correct documentary that has come before it. And the show certainly wasn't history revealed. It should have been titled Star Wars and Mythology (Again).
The show did not have one critical perspective at all. And I don't mean critical as in "bashing". I mean critical in its literary definition which examines positive aspects as well as valid negative aspects. It was a corporate commercial for the Star Wars brand.
And who said Reagan was "some politician"? As president during the 1980s, you either love him because he was a conservative and was a former actor. Or you hate him because he was a conservative and former actor. He was the president who didn't have a clue about drugs and society and said "Just say NO to drugs". As if that would get rid of the problem. He believed in supply-side economic which gave more money to the rich who would then bring up the economy, thus bringing the poor up as well. Of course, he fathered the huge national debt that was significantly reduced under Clinton, a Democrat. At the time, he was a vociferous anti-Communist who was believed to be capable of going to war with the Soviets. He was also tainted by the Iran-Contra affair in which his loyal minions took the bullet for their leader and served time in prison for illegally sending arms to foreign countries in violation of US law. He takes some credit for assisting the Russians overthrow the Soviet-run government by challenging Gorbachev tried to reform the USSR.
Newt Gingrich was the Speaker of the House during the Clinton years. He was a holdover from the Reagan conservative period when the US gave Congress to the Republicans and the White House to the Democrats. To Democrats he was reviled because of his conservative view but also for his role in the impeachment of Clinton. And then to Democratic satisfaction the country watched as his own party booted him out in disgrace because they blamed him for the failure of Congress to remain Republican dominated.
The reference of Nute Gunray is a long standing bash against the Republican party. Nute = Newt Gingrich. Gunray = Reagan, spelled backwards phoenitically "Ray" "Gun" --> "Gun" "Ray".
Who ever chose the people for interviews in this special had no clue. Who cares what Ginrich has to say about SW? What does it matter what Nancy Pelosi says about SW? I suppose that was the producer's failed "idea" of a politically balanced perspective. And visit Jonathan Young's website (http://www.folkstory.com/). It looks like SW Revealed was formatted after his slick website. It was amazing how much air time was devoted to his perspective.
There is a lot of informative and balanced programming on the History Channel, but they also serve as a platform to some of the craziest, far-fetched theories out there. Aliens and Atlantis are put on par with the more reputable and traditional theories. And some of the programming is schlock. Like the SW and Technology show. Probably a quarter of the footage comes from LFL. Why not give more footage to the actual technologies?
The show was "nice" in the fact that you get to see SW connected to mythic ideas (most of which I reject anyway), but it's not a primary source material about SW and pop culture.

^^^While i agree that it would have been nice to see an examination of Star Wars vis a vis pop culture and a critical examination of themes and such, that clearly wasn't the purpose of this special. The special was intended as a relatively light (with respect to any critical analysis perspective) discussion of the Saga, evidencing and demonstrating the numerous influences of classic myth on SW. It was meant more as an informative piece for those who had never realized the timeless/classical influence and symbolism in Star Wars. It was clearly never meant as a critical literary discussion, and certainly not as an examination of SW's pop-culture connections.
And while i agree that the title of "The Legacy Revealed" may not have been the best, it did fit the program -- again, a discussion of Star Wars with respect to the legacy of classical and timeless (read: frequently repeated) stories and themes.
BTW, no one in this thread asked who Reagan was, nor did anyone describe him as "some politician". Someone did ask who Gingrich was, however.
As for why Pelosi and Gingrich -- i agree. Pelosi was probably on there if only since she's presently a powerful political figure, while Newt was probably there just because of the "Nute" connection (even if it wasn't mentioned). At least each of the two of them actually mentioned Star Wars by name. Dan Rather to me seemed the most out of place, to the point that i'm fairly convinced that his interview was from a completely unrelated History Channel project that they just shoehorned into this one when discussing the war parallels.

How do you mean? Do you mean that you reject the mythic ideals themselves, or that you reject that SW is connected to those mythic ideals?

Plur, good point. I was a bit disappointed that the focus seemed to be more on mythology than actual historical influences on plotline and aspects of design. The promotional materials which showed WWII helmets morphing into stormie helmets, Buddha turning into Yoda, and fighter planes becoming X-wings made it seem like design would be discussed a lot more than it was. It was still an interesting special, but it was marketed a bit misleadingly.

They did re-air it again the next night (Tuesday, at 7pm), so i would expect they'll re-air it again. Possibly over the weekend, since that tends to be when cable channels most often repeat some of their new programming. Perhaps check the History Channel website; they may have more info there.
EDIT: I just checked the History Channel site, and it says that they'll be re-airing it on Sunday, June 3, at 8pm (this coming Sunday).
