I like what Kevin Smith said about Anakin being a whiney teenager. "That's who the greatest villain the galaxy has ever seen would be! Some emo kid!"

That was classic. And I totally agree with him.

I get the feeling Palpatine was born evil. I don't think he was corrupted and fell.

That's the message of the saga as it now stands, but remember, Vader was originally perceived the same way. If we ever get any EU, TV, etc on Palpy's backstory or even anything that's sympathetic and humanizing about his life as Emperor, he too will begin the slide down the slippery slope to emo kid. wink (Not that it's necessarily a bad thing to undermine the black and white morality of the Force as portrayed in the films, but that's a topic for another day.) It's very hard to tell a story about someone without making them sympathetic in some way. Palpatine is pure dagnasty evil in the SW mythos because we've never seen him do anything aside from his dagnasty evil activities and we have no idea how he got to be that way.

Basically, I agree with what the documentary said. Look at the life histories of people who've done crazy, violent, and malicious things and you'll see most of them were really messed up in one way or another, and that may or may not be a result of having actually been born that way.

I hope EU never does look into Palpatine's history for the very reason that you say. I like the fact that as it currently he's a mysterious, devilish type figure. I guess its inevitable that in the end EU will explore his past, though.

The show was "nice" in the fact that you get to see SW connected to mythic ideas (most of which I reject anyway), but it's not a primary source material about SW and pop culture.

How do you mean? Do you mean that you reject the mythic ideals themselves, or that you reject that SW is connected to those mythic ideals?

I don't want to move this thread in a different direction, but I disagree with the fawning cultural commentary that SW is "a modern myth". I see SW as an epic.

Just because George Lucas says SW is a myth (or based on myth) doesn't make it a myth. Critics who give critiques must question the words, motivations, and art of the artists themselves. Artists desire that their work be taken and accepted in the manner that they intend it. But I am of the philosophical school that art in order to be completed as art must take on a life separate of the artist/creater and judged by the public, whether that public is critical or not.

This is where Legacies Revealed is "nice" but falls short is that there is no serious questioning of SW. It's more like a commercial posing as history. A better critique of SW are two books: Star Wars on Trial and SW and Philosophy.

For example, in SW on Trial, there are two perspectives on Leia as a strong leader. The writer whose essay is takes the side that women in SW are portrayed as fundamentally weak is none other than Jeanne Cavelos who wrote Science and Star Wars. That's quite different than the one-sided perspective from Legacy Revealed.

Ahh, i can understand that. Though of course there's the argument that "epic" and "myth" are nearly synonymous when it comes to literary works, but that's a whole different discussion entirely, and vastly open to interpretation of a given work. peace

I still haven't seen this show. sad

Did it have comments from George Lucas and members of the cast a crew from the movies? Or was it just invited guests talking about Lucas's work?
