It's official, but that isn't Darth Maul. It was a doppleganger. Lucas said Maul was dead, so he's dead.

Eh? You mean the Tales comics that had the Infinities logo stamped in 'em?
Technically, the Tales comics were originally Infinties, up until issue #20 or #21. However, many of the earlier stories have since been established by LFL as official canon, and the Vader vs Maul story is one of them.

There's no confirmation that it's a doppleganger (ie, not the real Maul). How the Prophets of the Dark Side ressurrected him is unclear. And yes, Lucas said Maul was dead. He did die. He came back. He died again.

Where can I find this?
[perhaps....on the internet?]
The story is "Resurrection", and it's featured in Star Wars Tales issue #9, and included in the Volume 3 of the Tales TPB collections.

I tend to agree; however, in and of itself, it was a decently done story, especially Vader's last line when he kills Maul.

The Vader vs Maul clone story is not part of continuity- however it's is designed to fit into continuity.
Tales stories at the time had the "they could be or might not be" part of continuity approach. LFL outright stated the Vader vs Maul story was not canon.
However, there have been efforts to attempt to try to bring it into continuity (since it's such a fan favorite story and well executed), but these have only extended (as far as I am aware) to mentioning the planet it takles place on and maybe the group of darksiders that created the Maul clone in the story- but there's no canonical reference to them actually making the Maul clone or that he fought Vader.
In other words, elements contained/introduced that story have been brought into continuity, but not the story itself, not the Maul clone.
Now, as for the liklihood of Lucas bringing back Maul, that seems highly unlikely. He had Maul chopped in half to help eliminate the possibilities of him being brought back, and subsequently vetoed the concept artist suggestion that it was Maul underneath Grievous's mask (they originally had Mual's eyes under the mask and Lucas nixxed the idea).
He's dead, Jim.

I was pretty certain that someone from LFL (i think it was Leland in his blog?) explicitly stated that the story was now canon. But i may be mistaken.
EDIT: As per Leland @ TOS: http://blogs.starwars.com/holocron/22/comments
Leland Chee posted:
"The Vader vs. Maul brawl is canon? It's not quite the real Darth Maul. Hence the "or something." Who knows, it could have been a vision like Luke confronting Vader on Dagobah or just some sort of Sith illusion. Or a clone. Nothing's been determined as to what we are actually seeing, just that Vader and Maul have a pretty cool battle."

As much as I'd love to see the two duke it out, and it's always been something I'd wanna see, I agree the concept is stupid. Thats like Ben comming back to life to duel Vader in ESB or ROTJ..

Ah, I hadn't caught that tidbit- I stand corrected.
If it is part of continutiy, then I'd prefer it be some kind of Force illusion or doppleganger ala the Dagobah cave than a clone, but it is left ambiguous so perhaps that's for the best.

Agreed. Anyway, the real meat to the story i think is that it's implied (if not outright stated) in the story that Sidious knew exactly what the Prophets of the Dark Side cult members were doing with Maul (regardless of whether it was a clone, doppleganger, etc), and wanted to test Vader -- both as an actual test of Vader's strengths as well as just simple Sithly amusement for Palpatine, watching his "apprentices" fight to the death.

Yeah, and it is one of the better Vader stories out there, with the infamous exchange:
Maul: "What could you hate enough to destroy me?"
Vader: "Myself."

Uh....no. Lucas made it very clear in an interview after TPM that he had Obi-Wan cut Maul in half specifically to ensure fans knew he was dead and that there was NO chance of Maul coming back.

Yeah, but Boba Fett was swallowed whole in full battle armor by a creature that is so slow to digest it's food that it takes about a millennium. So he had the means and the time to fight for his life and make a possible escape. So, yeah, it's little different then getting sliced in half.

That was a retcon and everyone knows it. Boba Fett was meant to die, but he was brought back just to milk it.

Bringing back Boba Fett is nothing compared the ridiculousness of bringing back Maul. Maul's death was an integral part of the story of TPM, by having young Obi-Wan take down the big bad guy who killed his master. It also set up Obi-Wan being knighted and caused Palpatine to have to find a new apprentice for AOTC. Boba's death was a cheap joke that had no bearing on the story of ROTJ. If you watch the movie with him surviving in mind it changes nothing. If you were to do that with Darth Maul and TPM it would completely change the mood of the ending. That is why there is no chance he will be back for the show.

Exactly. My point was on the ridiculousness that, with stupid writers, ANYONE could back from the dead. Boba Fett was ate, swallowed, with NOT full body armor, it was cloth with some armor plating, and he still came back witha stupid excuse. And the acids would have killed him.
Darth Maul was cut in half, but only fell into darkness. Tell me EU idiots wouldn't eat it up and defend his living post-TPM. Anything can happen, let's just hope Maul doesn't come back. Ever.
