No the acids would not have killed him before he could escape because it was specifically explained by Threepio relaying that they would experience PAIN and SUFFERING as they are SLOWLY digested. It all depends on how much willpower you as the viewer are willing to assign the character. As a Bible believer, I believe the story of Jonah and the Whale, so it's not much of a stretch to me to accept. Maul on the other hand was sliced in half.

And I'm sure you'd believe that Vader was able to magically regenerate his severed limbs with some newly-discovered force power if the EU writers said it were so. By the way, I take the story of Jonah and the Whale to be a parable (not a true account). There is no humanly way possible that a person could be eaten, have their flesh burned off from 72 straight hours of exposure to digestive acids and come out alive to talk about it. If Jonah's tale were true, whatever remains of Jonah were regurgitated onto the beach, would have most likely been unrecognizable.

I admit, Maul was a bad-ass. But, if GL kept Maul alive, then we wouldn't have Dooku. If Boba Fett played a bigger role, then we wouldn't have had Jango. And if Anakin would've become Vader sooner in the trilogy, then we probably wouldn't have had Grievous.
Instead, Maul died creating a need for Palpatine to find another Sith Lod. Enter Dooku.
Boba was too young, so we got to meet his father, Jango, who is one of the coolest characters ever created in the SW universe.
And Anakin didn't convert into the Vader we all know and love from the OT until the end of ROTS, which allowed GL to use Grievous as a foreshadow to what Anakin would become.
Not only that, but then you wouldn't have the following battles:
ATOC
Obi-Wan vs. Jango
Mace vs. Jango
Anakin and Obi-Wan vs. Dooku (pt.1)
Yoda vs. Dooku
ROTS
Anakin and Obi-Wan vs. Dooku (pt. 2)
Obi-Wan vs. Grievous
So I'm glad Maul got sliced in half and never returned. And I'm excited for all new characters! That's why the series intriguing because we get new heroes to cheer for and new villains to despise. (Although we know Boba Fett will definitely be in the series.)

I wouldn't rule it out if Lucas & co. did a flashback like sceen or 2. Otherwise I think it would be a bit of a reach to think Maul would be in any show.

Maybe he'll appear in the form of a hologram or something (like a short cameo) but even that I highly doubt...

I think flashback or even a deam like sceen would be pretty cool. Now if their going back a little bit then I could see him in it. But, I don't think that is going to happen.

I never really cared that Maul got sliced in half until I read this. To imagine, No Dooku, no Jango and no Grievous. Yep, good times those were
