But of course, we were most interested in talking with George Lucas, the affable genius film director who occasionally graces us in New York with an appearance. Lucas is absolutely one of my favorite people, a lovely guy who seems unaffected by his enormous success.

Lucas is currently preparing "Indiana Jones 4" with Harrison Ford, Blanchett and Shia LaBoeuf. The latter plays Ford's son, which means his mother was possibly the character Karen Allen played in "Raiders of the Lost Ark."

"I can't say," Lucas said when I brought up Allen.

Lucas says that Sean Connery still hasn't signed on, but his character, Indy's dad, is in the script. Other than that, his lips are sealed.

"Steven thinks we can keep the whole thing a secret," Lucas told me. "I explained to him that it's impossible nowadays. We can't live like that."

So then, tell me more about "Indy 4," I suggested.

"Oh no," replied Lucas with a smile.

Lucas told me he has seen all the summer movies since his company, Industrial Light and Magic, does most of the special effects. The only one they didn't work on was "Spider-Man 3." What did he think of it?

"It's silly. It's a silly movie," he said. "There just isn't much there. Once you take it all apart, there's not much story, is there?"

Well, it's not "Star Wars."

"People thought 'Star Wars' was silly, too," he added, with a wink. "But it wasn't."

Lucas, by the way, says he is readying "Clone Wars," an animated series for TV that's derived from "Star Wars." Many "Star Wars" characters appear in "Clone Wars," but voiced by other actors.

And here's a little news: Lucas tells me he will make two more live-action films based in the "Star Wars" era.

"But they won't have members of the Skywalker family as characters," he said. "They will be other people of that milieu."

The two extra films will also be made for TV and probably be an hour long each. But, like "Clone Wars," Lucas doesn't know where on TV they will land.

Hello, HBO and Showtime. It may be time to pony up.

I wonder if Friedman isn't confusing the TV show for the "new live action films."

Why would Lucas do "new films" that would only be an hour each?

I think Lucas is probably talking about a "feature legnth" pilot episode for the live action series. Its not uncommon to start a series with a longer first episode, is it?

As for the Spidey comments, I'm sure they'll stir up the Spidey fanboys! laugh

Never trust Fox News. Lucas...wow he was honest I guess. I personally dig Spider-Man 3 despite it's fault. Reminds me of another installment in a popular series that people ate alive. Does Darth Maul = Venom?? Anyway as for the "telemovies" it is clear Fox haven't a clue what they are talking about as usual.

Ummmm... anyway....

Neat stuff here. I like how he trashed Spidey. Regardless of what he decides for the TV show, I'm looking forward to it. grin

I'm sure Lucas and Spielberg spend all their business meetings infront of little fires after they have dinner and share a pear for dessert.

I'm pretty sure that the line ''two live action films'' means the tv show. Lets pray it doesn't. I think what it means is that theres going to be two different sides to the show, probably one focusing on the rebellion, one focusing on the imperials.

Also never trust the media for solid details. If Lucas doesn't want much leaked he's gonna throw out leads, like the spoiler days of ROTS when we had all these scenes and scripts floating around.

Oh and spiderman 3? Yea I like the movies, but Lucas is right theres not much of a plot behind it anymore. Now its just the life of Peter Parker learning new touching life lessons. Kirsten dunst's voice and acting is annoying

Even George Lucas telling me details for the show face to face I wouldn't believe. George is a sneaky guy.

hahah yeah...also he said in ROTS we'd find out why Boba Fett has a vendetta against the Skywalker family. I remember being like "I never knew Skywalkers and Fett had a vendetta."

As I posted in the PT Forum, I expect there will be a 2-hour feature-length pilot episode, a la Battlestar Galactica or any number of shows, and possibly another feature-length following, which will really constitute the first 2-5 episodes of the series.

The plot will be relatively self-contained, just in case (ha ha) the SW tv series doesn't work, so they'll release the feature-lengths on DVD.

Futurama is doing the same thing as they're releasing Futurama: Bender's Big Score on DVD this December, then breaking it up into 4 individual episodes on Cartoon Network next year.

I thought about that but that'd go againsy everything we have heard about the series. They said they were going to film the first season in it's entirety before it airs.
