According to Rick McCallum at Celebration Europe, he's interviewing writers for the live action Star Wars TV series and they may be hiring some of the EU writers to work on the show.

Though he would not reveal any new information about the plots or characters McCallum did say that he was looking forward to working on them because they would be much darker than the movies, character-based and written for adults.

So, which EU writers are deserving of this? Which ones can craft compelling stories that are darker than the movies, character-driven and will appeal to adults?

Right off the bat, I have a few MUSTS from the EU writers stable --

Timothy Zahn
Michael Stackpole (in fact, let him run a "Rogue Squadron" TV series of his own.)
A.C. Crispin

These three authors "get it" even more than Lucas.

My list is very short and consists of two people,

Matthew Stover and Troy Denning

If you want dark and you want people that get it, this is where the list ends and begins. Now, a third person that I'm torn on would be Karen Traviss, I really don't want her meddling with any of the other characters but she would be great for Clone only episodes.

Zahn, Zahn and Zahn again. I must confess that I do not know many EU books but from the few a read Zahn was the only one who impressed me.

I forgot the names of the "book to the movie"-writers from Episode IV - VI. I only remember that I never read so bad books before (even Danielle Steele was better). So I hope they won't be hired.

I think the top of the list would probably be Michael Reaves, given that he's already written for television in the past (he was a writer for some episodes of Batman: The Animated Series, for example). His first SW novel, Darth Maul: Shadow Hunter, felt like it would adapt well to the small or big screen as well. Curious to see where his upcoming Coruscant Nights trilogy goes.

Zahn would be another good choice, I feel. He's also expressed interest in the past of adapting one if his non-SW works to a screenplay format, and I think his style of writing would translate well.

Stackpole and Allston would be two other great canidates.

Stover I'd be curious to see what he could do in the medium. His novels would be difficult works to translate to the screen, but at the same time he added some nice translatable touches to the ROTS novelization that improved the movie and story by about a thousand times over.

Luceno and Denning would be interesting to see get a crack at things too. Luceno has worked off of Lucas's notes in the past for Cloak of Deception and Labyrinth of Evil, so he'd seemingly make a good collaborator. Meanwhile Denning's good at constructing some pretty intense action sequences and complex conflicts that would make for some excellent dramatic TV. The only shame is Denning's true strength lays in his fanastic ability to write Han and Leia's characterization better than any other writer, so any work of his in the Dark Times era would unfortinately not be able to take advantage of that strength.

Also Brian Daley, though sadly no longer among us, could probably have his Han Solo Adventures mined for some episodes depending on how broad of an area the series will cover. Plus, if the Tv series does in fact lead up to ANH, it's very likely Lucas would tap Daley's SW Radio Drama material for inclusion to some degree.

And given that he's also written for Star Wars TV before (Droids and Ewoks). peace

Zahn would be great but not alone or for the whole series. Maybe a few episodes.

Agreed. 100%
I thought Shadow Hunter was astounding work. I also greatly enjoyed his (& Steve Perry's) Medstar duology, not least because of the return of i-5.

I think I read recently (around here?) that he wrote one of the Ewoks episodes too. So he's got past form! tongue

So Michael Reaves, Steve Perry and Timothy Zahn for my vote. grin

Personally, I'd like to keep away from EU writers, if possible, and just have very good, established TV writers. For this show to work and really be a success the writing has to be amazingly good. Its too much of a gamble, IMO, to hire writers that haven't got a good record of writing really top notch, quality TV material. Thats nothing against the EU writers at all, just my personal prefernce for how I want the TV show to go.

I'm very surprised Lucas is considering hiring EU writers, actually.

This doesn't surprise me at all. But then again, I'm still skeptical that his series will be any good at all.

Hopfully any influence from the EU writers will be minimal. I think 90% of the series will be written by proper TV writers.
