Okay, I will clarify that. KJA is a horrendous Star Wars writer, but was enjoyable as an X-Files novelist. Better?

So, you don't think much to his SW work, then?

Well, he certainly does have a superweapon fetish.
Darth_Shpydar posted: I'm not a fan of KJA either, but i could see how his IMO simplistic style would fit with TV-style writing. I wouldn't mind him writing as a "hired gun" -- that is, just scripting an episode, not actually coming up with the story idea for the episode.
I agree with this... his "simplicity" could work to the script's advantage, at times.
And KJA has a good imagination sometimes, especially when it comes to inventing unique planets/characters/machines/etc. But when it comes to the actual storytelling... um... well, I guess I find him a little too two-dimensional. As in, he has straight-cut heroes and villains, with nothing in between. I like villains I can understand and even sympathize with, not the evil-cackling sort at the helm of a gargantuan superweapon.

The2ndQuest posted: I think the top of the list would probably be Michael Reaves, given that he's already written for television in the past (he was a writer for some episodes of Batman: The Animated Series, for example). His first SW novel, Darth Maul: Shadow Hunter, felt like it would adapt well to the small or big screen as well. Curious to see where his upcoming Coruscant Nights trilogy goes.
I think the best part about this is that Coruscant Nights is set in the same timeframe. He'd be familiar with a part of the novel-EU that could actually make cameo appearances in the series, which would lead to both the possibility that such a cameo might happen and, more important, the chance that it will be good.
I think while they'd mostly want to have writers who can write scripts (and I think most EU authors still have to prove that - they're novelists, after all), they might also want to have someone like Luceno sitting in the "think tank" that comes up with the greater story concept.
What do you think about game authors? If Karpshyn continues his game work with novels, it isn't a far stretch to have someone go from game dialogue to TV dialogue. And KOTOR 2 really has lots of cutscene material...

If I had to be specific though I'd say Timothy Zahn, James Luceno, Troy Denning, Kevin J. Anderson and Matthew Stover.

What does television writing experience have to do with anything? A good story is a good story, and trust me these guys can write good stories .

Don't be to quick to dismiss ShaneP's question. It's TOTALLY valid.
Writing books =/= writing for television. I have no novel writing experience myslef, but I did write for tv. Trust me - not the same.

I'm note sure any of the EU writers should necessarily be considered by default. It's not meant as disrespect. But writing a story for a novel and a workable script are almost like two separate crafts. Maybe they could provide an outline or basis for a script. But I'd almost like to see new talent for new perspectives. Authors and prior script writers may cast an unintended bias across the effort.

Except the fact that there stories go well beyond what Lucas has ever stated SW is, suggests that they do get it more than even Lucas does.

If Boba Fett's in it at all, then Karen Travis is a natural choice.

I would say Steven Barnes is a good choice, if not an obscure one.
He wrote Cestus Deception, which was a good stand alone Clone Wars era book. He also has some of TV experience I think for like Twight Zone and Star Trek
