Ricky gives us some more specific info than I recall seeing previously in the latest SW Insider:
-Rick and George have met with over 200 writers worldwide, from which they hope to choose about 5 or 6 people for writer conferences later this year, for a subsequent 6 months of script writing work, for shooting hopefully by 2009, likely in Australia (unless a cheaper, more effective venue emerges).
-The idea is to do about 13 to 16 episodes over one or two years. After the second or third year one of the characters could move on to his own series. Then, by the fourth or fifth year, they would love to have 4 or 5 separate TV series of 13 episodes each running. It's the pipe dream now, but so long as it's good, people respond to it and it's achieved at the level needed, that's the goal.
These comments seem to indirectly address the concern some fans have about the quality of work on a TV budget. It seems they're aiming for shorter seasons to incrase the dollars per episode put into each. Though that's speculation on my part. I really do like the idea of having multiple shorter series running at the same time- it opens up crossover possibilities only Stargate and, to a much lesser degree, Star Trek and the Buffyverse have managed to achieve, and which Babylon 5 almost achieved. Rather exclusive group.

I really like the idea of short Seasons and if the series really works as described upwards, it might be very interssting thing. I hope that they will do "dark side hero" spin offs, too.

My gosh, the more I think about it the more excited I get. I've been thinking about it the past week since I got this month's issue in the mail and I think it's brilliant. By keeping the number of episodes per season fairly low, I think it keeps the hype up. Shorter seasons also allow the writers to get really great scripts worked out and have high production values for each episode.

Yeah it also avoids filler episodes like the ones that plagued the second halves of Galactica's 2nd & 3rd seasons that it's shorter 1st season lacked.

I notice production won't start until 2009 now (originally the air date) which means we'll be looking at 2010 before this actually makes its way on to our TV screens?

Not necessarily- if they shoot in early 2009, the first episodes should be ready to air by the fall at the latest, mid-summer at the earliest.

Presumably ILM will have to put in some special effects, though?

Why does it take Lucas so long to do everything? I mean, he still hasn't started these "small and personal" films he was talking about in 1977!

Doctor Who has like 13 episodes a season and it works fine. But over two season it isn't much. I am more wait and see on this.

Yes, but shows with heavy FX, like Stargate or even BSG, can or have conformed to such a schedule.

That equation is the mistakes of Young Indy multiplied by 10. It's a recipe to confuse and alienate the audience.
I hope it works, though. heh.

I really do like that speculation, however. With ILM the shows could really look top notch.
This is definitely interesting news. I don't mind the shorter seasons or the idea of spin-offs. At least it makes it something different to one, single, straight-old TV show . . .

George and Rick seem to always be talking about the future on this project, never are their minds on where they are........what they are doing! Yoda would not be pleased.........They should focus on getting the main series off the ground, see how that goes and plan from there.

I think doing fewer episode's per series, but making them really top quality, with a large budget, is the best way to go. Its exciting news that they are going this way, IMO. The old less is more concept.
