I am sure that the story concepts will be stellar. It's the writing that I am concerned about because, let's face it, the PT lacked in the writing department. So long as the writing is at least above-board the series should thrive. Regardless, GL said that he's making the episodes and then selling them to third parties. He'll retain complete creative control and that means that we'll get pure Star Wars instead of some perverted version of the gffa.
At a minimum, the statements from GL mean that the focus will not be Jedi. What I think more probable is following a group of characters for a short period of time and then at the season 1 finale, catch a glimpse of one of the characters storing a lightsaber in a trunk for safekeeping. It'll be brief shots and glimpses that some of these characters might once have been extraordinary but are now forced to hide and refrain from using their immense force talents.

As far as the writing goes, I think its encouraging that Lucas is clearly taking a long time interviewing and choosing writers. It shows he understands that for a TV show to work, the writing has to be good. Though I suppose I should hold of making a judgement until I see who they've actually hired.

It is encouraging, isn't it? GL understands that SW in a different medium requires different talents and skills to make it work. I sincerely hope that he picks some quality writers with a real passion for the gffa.

Let's put it this way- has Star Wars (with the exception of the Holiday Special) ever had anything done halfway? No. George surrounds himself with the best talents and he's not going to have to settle for writers who have worked on cheesy low budget sci-fi shows. That's why I'm not worried and all and cannot wait for this to air.

I don't want to quibble over whether GL surrounds himself with the best talent...but I see your point. I think GL just wants to make an interesting show and give his fans a larger slice of the SW pie. He wants to take the fans down different avenues than have previously been explored; it's going to take some faith and open-mindedness about the gffa from the fanbase to help this thing work. We have to be willing to go with GL down different pathways than we are familiar. Since it is GL, we have to believe that this new direction for SW will pan out and be rewarding and interesting. I've got that faith but I also have fears. Needless to say, I am eager.

Agreed.
I'd even say that the Holiday Special wasn't done halfway either -- yeah, it's painfully horrible, but it does have a (for the time frame) fairly wide cast of well-known variety show staples, and surely was ambitious for what it was.

Lord_NoONE posted: The only cancellation threat is broadcast cancellation but not production cancellation, which means worst case scenario is we buy all the episodes on DVD.
And we'll all do that anyway.
So, no Jedi? Hmmmmm, what will this show focus on? Smugglers and bounty hunters, maybe? That could be fun.

Obviously it's speculation but I think that is probably the route they are taking as well.

And considering the characters in the movies who fit that category- Han, Chewie, Lando, the Fetts, etc, are all extremely popular with the fans, I'd say that's a good choice.

I completely agree. It fits in with the "darker" and "more adult" thing and it's an area of the universe they have sorta brushed only a little on.

With the shift in focus though, I think the environments have to become dirtier, grittier and more industrial...like the world of the OT.

I'm actually really looking forward to the live-action series and I'm glad that the focus will not be on the Jedi. I don't want the live-action series taking away from the Jedi action and duels we've seen on the big screen. The animated series can go crazy with the Jedi as far as I'm concern because it not live-action and there fore exists in a different realm then the film. They can co-exist.
I'm hoping the live-action TV series is along the same lines as the first Dark Forces or Tie Fighter video games. They were beyond awesome and featured no Jedi at all. My dream would be a show title Star Wars: Rebellion and would be very much espionage driven with Rebel spies, moles within the Imperial ranks, double agents, bounty hunters and the fledgling Rebel Alliance vs the Imperial war machine.
I want to see a bad*** rebel agent taking down stormtroopers the old fashion way. Mowing them down with a blaster rifle.

In 1977 George Lucas created the Star Wars Trilogy and changed the way we look at movies. In 1999 George Lucas created the Prequel Trilogy and changed the way we look at Star Wars. Frasier, Lost, and Whose Line Is It Anyway? are the best tv shows ever.
