Earthknight posted: Instead of Star Wars, just call it Star Crime. I'm only going to give this show 15 minutes. If it's boring bounty hunter/crime lord stuff about death sticks, I'm turning. I don't care if Lucas is friends with Coppola. SW is SW. Godfather is Godfather.
Well, I don't know, the first 1/3 of ANH is just Life On Tatooine, and the first 1/4 of ROTJ is "Star Crime", plus you know the major subplot of ESB, so to me its not out of the ordinary. Personally, those sections of the films are among my favorites. I guess it depends on what you like. For those that like more of the space-pulp/war aspect they get their fill with the Clone Wars and just about every single spinoff since 1999, and for the other side of Star Wars--the old west side--this could be an interesting angle if done right. I mean Firefly to me is better than all the SW material since 1983 combined, so I guess it depends on what you are looking for.
With the exception of the last sentence (I'm a fan of the PT and, while I liked Firefly all right, it's not one of my favorites), I completely agree. Anyone who thinks a show centered on the underworld and bounty hunters not being "Star Warsy" hasn't seen (or paid enough attention to) the OT in a long time.

They work because they are a subplot and don't get too much focus. Giving those plots center stage isn't going to work out well imo. People want SW. Not Star Crime.

Speak for yourself. If done right, it could be real cool.
Check out the interview with George just posted on the main site here (it links to mf.com). Lucas describes the LA series as "film noir."
I like that. I like that a lot

Yes, the "seedy" side of the OT was one thing that made it more accessible to viewers.
Certainly there are the Wild Wild West and criminal organization aspects to Star Wars, I just think if that's ALL they're focusing on, it wouldn't seem like Star Wars to me. Particularly if they're going as "hardcore" as Sopranos and Deadwood.
Star Wars is still a space opera, and if they get too far away from that, it won't be SW to me anymore.

From TheForce.net frontpage. MF.com has a new Lucas interview up from the Total Film scans.
Interesing to read that the series is described as a talky, noir-ish Soap Opera, and whose cast demographic is going to be half humans and half aliens. So long as it has Fett, X-Wing Pilots, TIE-Fighter Pilots, and plenty of bounty hunters like Lucas and McCallum have said in the past I'm ok with a talk soap opera. Lucas also said in the interview it's the LAS is going to be like Episode IV too.

'Soap Opera' 0o
Well, I know Star Wars could be classified as a 'space opera', but I'm not sure 'soap opera' could describe anything I like about it.

Its like when George said AOTC was going to be a love story. Sure, it was a big part of the plot. But the other half the movie was Jedi and Clones and battles. By the time the series comes around I'm sure there is going to be more familiarity to it than there seems to be now.
And just because there are no Jedi doesn't mean we won't see ex-Jedi and light saber fights. General Grievous is proof that George doesn't need people to be Jedi or Sith to still carry and be able to kick butt with a saber.

I think people forget there was a time before 1999 when there was no such thing as armies and Jedi battles in a Star Wars film. Star Wars started out as gun-slingers, smugglers, rebels and bounty hunters, and hives of wretched scum and villainy. I mean if you even go and read the old Marvel EU half the stories are this sort of thing; its in some ways truer to the original premise than most of the more recent EU. To me, it seems as though this is back to a more OT style. Its not that thats necessarily better, but I find it very refreshing because for the last decade we have hardly had any of this sort of thing, its all been Jedi this and Clone War that, and if there isn't a planet being invaded or a Sith running around people think its boring or not "Star Warsey", which is absurd.
The show may indeed suck, but I'm gaining more and more interest simply because its hitting on territory thats a welcome relief from whats currently saturating the SW marketplace. And you know its not like its actually going to be like the Sopranos or Deadwood in a literal sense, Lucasfilm is just selling it by comparing it to two of the most popular dramas on TV that have common elements to the upcoming show. To me it seems like it'll probably be in the vein of stuff like Firefly, which I can imagine a LFL rep would have sold as a "Sopranos meets Deadwood, the old west and criminals, with lots of personal stories and soap operas".
As for Star Wars and soap opera--what do you think the series became ever since ESB?? The entire Anakin Skywalker plot made the film a soap opera. Thats always been the biggest complaint by Star Wars purists, that it went from a swashbuckler adventure in 1977 to a serious soap opera in 1980 and onward. All the "soap opera" thing means is that there are ongoing personal stories, and thats the norm for any serious television series today--Sopranos is a soap opera, Battlestar Galactica is a soap opera, Six Feet Under is a soap opera, Buffy the Vampire Slayer is a soap opera, etc.
Again, its so early to really make judgement about whether the show is any good or not. Could be bad, good be watchable, could be brilliant. And true--it might not be for everyone, just like the Clone War series might not be for everyone. For those who grew up on Star Wars, read all the Han Solo adventure novels and followed the Marvel comic series, they would not recognize the series as it exists today and would say "you call THAT Star Wars??" when you showed them much of the EU, just like for some people who spend 90% of their time in the world of the prequels--which is, lets face it, where LFL now spends 100% of their time in terms of movie tie-ins (or at least it seems)--something in the style of the old west might seem out of place. But they are both two sides to the coin that is Star Wars.

Not looking for armies. Not looking for Jedi Battles. Both of which are out of place post ROTS.

it's hard to know how it is going to look like so early in production, but I have faith in George Lucas, he always find some ideas that nobody had exploited before, he's still a great storyteller. I just hope the show won't turn into what Dan Knauf desbribed as "talking heads". Starwars is still a visual show, it has to be visually entertaining.

I am starting to get a Casablanca vibe, with all this film noir talk. Which isn;t abad thing. It deals with a seedy underworld and takes place durign a war although you see no battles.

I don't see that, canonically speaking. It mentions in the opening crawl for ANH that the rebels had just won their first victory. I'd say it'd be more like a french underground thing, leading up to a full scale rebellion.
But then, it wouldn't be the first time SW canon was retconned post 1999.
